Welcome, Boat Friends!
Get ready to experience an extraordinary event that unfolded on June 1, 2024. In this video, you'll witness the Federal Yukon, a massive ocean-going bulk carrier, as it arrives in Duluth, Minnesota, through an impenetrable fog. You will also hear one of the loudest horn blasts from a ship, which noticeably startled many ship spectators on the pier! This 200-meter-long vessel, built in 2000, sails under the flag of the Marshall Islands and is operated by Fednav Ltd. The ship is designed to transport large quantities of bulk cargo, and in this case, it arrived to load petroleum coke at SMET dock.
Petroleum coke, often referred to as pet coke, is a carbon-rich solid material derived from oil refining. It is used in various industrial applications, including as a fuel source and in the production of steel and aluminum.
What makes this video truly unique is not just the dramatic arrival of the Federal Yukon through dense fog, barely visible as it passes the iconic Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge, but also the subsequent footage. Many hours later, once the fog had cleared, I boarded the Boat Friends boat and pulled alongside the Federal Yukon before it started loading. This allowed me to capture detailed, clear shots of the ship, providing a closer look at its impressive structure and operations.
The combination of the eerie, foggy arrival and the detailed close-ups after the fog lifted creates a captivating and dramatic viewing experience. This video is not just for ship enthusiasts but for anyone fascinated by grand engineering feats and remarkable weather phenomena.
Join me in exploring the incredible sight of this giant vessel materializing from the fog and later, in clear conditions, showcasing its enormous scale and the process before loading petroleum coke. This unique footage promises to be an unforgettable spectacle for all viewers, crossing over into various interests and genres.
Don't miss this incredible and rare event, blending the mystique of dense fog with the awe-inspiring presence of a colossal ship!

Hi there. I'm a bit late to the party on this video. I was on a 3 day boatnerd trip to Ashtabula, Conneaut (Ohio towns), and Erie, PA. Had a blast. Fog.....scary scary stuff to navigate. But like you mentioned, the true professional captains we watch are highly trained to work in these conditions. With fog comes dew and humidity. Look at the moss growing on top of the concrete ledge starting at 5:25. Maybe someday they'll power wash it off or use something like Wet and Forget. Love the salties, especially ones with huge cranes. Really liked the transition from standing on the pier to watching from your boat. Very neat !!

You bring up a very interesting point regarding the fog. Also, big rig trucks on the road. Goods have to be shipped from one place to another and they start out on ships like in this video but then they transition to big trucks and trains. Regarding the trucks, I always give trucks huge distance and I make sure they can see me well. I can’t say that’s the same for other drivers. It’s OK if you miss some of those lives, I always enjoy interacting with you in the comment section. We are bonded together with these ships, brother.

@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike Ай бұрын
Dan, that is so cool to hear. I want you to have a great time in Duluth. When you bring your marine radio, just have it scanned 16, 10 and 8. You’ll hear the most traffic on that. Any security calls for the bridge to go up comes through on 16. Also, regarding schedules and other things. Here are the two tools that I use to determine when the ships will be arriving or departing in Duluth. Keep in mind, there is no sure thing because of weather, speed of loading/unloading, etc. However, if you use these two together, it’ll really help you know what’s going on. Here are those two tools. #1 This is updated by Duluth Harbor Cams, this one can be accurate too, however, it’s all about when it gets updated as well. They do a good job. harborlookout.com/ships#0 #2 This will help you determine exactly where the ship is in live time. It’s extremely accurate. The app I use is called “MarineTraffic” and it has a blue ship for the logo. You will really enjoy it! You can research vessel names and follow ships all over the world. You can download it on your Android or Apple phone.

I’d like to make a trip out to Duluth to ship watch someday in the near future. I really love the older style freighter ships, and would love to see a few in person. My friend in California, thank you so much for taking time out of your Friday to drop a comment. What a great comment to receive on a Friday morning. Many of the Boat Friends will read this as well. Welcome to the Boat community! It’s all about having some fun with the ships, chilling, talking about whatever. All positive positive vibes the whole way through. Zero negativity zone. Here are the answers to your questions. The best time of year to watch these ships I would say for you would be summer all the way through mid October because it gets very cold from that point on which doesn’t make it as fun to watch the ships, if you’re trying to relax and enjoy your time in Duluth. You’ll be able to stay outside much longer due to better weather. I really hope you make it up to Duluth because I promise you, once you experience these ships in person and the area you will be hooked and your heart will be left right here. You will love it. I promise you. Good food, good people good ships. This city is legit. Also, I want you to ask as many questions as you want and participate as many times as you want in the comment section. You can leave 100 comments if you want in one video. I want to have fun, I want you to enjoy the experience. And I want you to be part of this community. The Boat community. Here’s additional information if you make the trip to Duluth. Hold onto this right here below. Here are the two tools that I use to determine when the ships will be arriving or departing in Duluth. Poor fellow in the green sweater looked like he was about to soil his shorts when that awesome horn lit off coming out of the fog. Amazing to me how these majestic large vessels appear out of nowhere, and are as quiet as a church mouse. This vessel showing a lot of dock burns on the side, and like you said indicates a very hard working ship. I live near a Naval base and it's not uncommon to hear horns going off in the night. A bunch of locals have an urban legend about a ghost train. I tell them all the time if it was a train you would hear more doppler drop off. Ships move slow, so when they sound their horns it's pretty constant. You can sometimes hear them blasting back and forth - probably two ships passing in the night as it were.

@vibewithmike Ай бұрын
Deb, great hearing from you, my friend. Thanks for being part of the boat friends community. I want to say this, any questions you have, ask them and as many as you want. There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth. In most cases, once radio communication with the bridge has been established, use of the boat and bridge sound signals are not necessary and operation of the sound signals is left up to the captains. Often, boats will not use the loud horns after dark as a courtesy to city residents. So, most often when you hear the customary whistle/horn-blowing sequence of "long-short-short" it is a friendly salute to the Port of Duluth from the ship captain and is responded to by the lift bridge operator with the same sequence. The Master Salute is an upgraded more formal whistle/horn salute. That is “long-long-long-short-short.” While the famous sound may be a courtesy, it has long been part of the nautical tradition of this great inland sea port.

Bruce! What a pleasure hearing from you on a Wednesday. Happy July 4 if we don’t talk. I’ve got good memories of Kansas City. The barbecue there is unbelievable. I’ll never forget having great food at Q39. I also was able to watch a Royals game at Kaufman Stadium. Nothing like seeing waterfalls at a ballpark. I’ve been to Florida many times and I prefer that Atlantic side where you were at. I have a close friend of mine that has a very beautiful condo on the intercoastal in Hypoluxo, FL. He uses it for vacations and has let my family use it for vacations as well. I love that area. I love watching the boats down there. I love the weather. I love the fishing. I could go on forever. Brother, i’ll let you know the next time I’m down there. It’s an absolute pleasure meeting you and thank you for being part of this channel.

I’m still not 100% sure if I missed it and edit it or if it didn’t happen

I didn't hear the answering horn signal from the bridge. Did I miss it or don't they use it in that thick fog?

I might have missed it in the edit by accident
