I'm really glad Andrew didn't try to copy Raul's performance in the movie and instead tried to emulate Jonathan Larson himself. That is what was needed for what the movie was trying to achieve and his performance carries the movie.

Nick and Andrew, in my opinion carried the energy Jonathan Larson did in his original performance, making them my favourite! There's sort of a nervous, "sucks for me...oh well!" (What can you do!) energy to Jonathan's performance, and while a more melancholy, hopeless version is a nice rendition, I really prefer the original tone :)
@izzyatzemis37572 жыл бұрын
lin may not be the best singer but the emotion and energy he put into that performance puts it on the level of any talented singer
@deenadallas28022 жыл бұрын
I was actually going to say that! And yes, I agree! That relates to me whenever I am trying to act and show my emotions while singing. I'm not the best at singing whenever I do that, but at least I'm trying. I'm a huge fan of Lin and everything he does (especially singing) and I relate a lot. Like Lin, I always love telling stories, I love musical theatre so much, and I write a lot of my own stories and scripts. (I can't play music though, but I can write lyrics for my own songs too.) I even want to write a musical based on "Vivo," which is one of his animated movies that came out to Netflix back in August. Ever since I wrote the script and new songs for the musical, I've been filled with emotions and I've dreamed about Lin finding out about my musical project based on his movie. Anyways, I love when Lin actually acts while singing (even though he's not the best at singing), because that actually shows real emotion and sometimes I cry whenever I see it. I realized that if I want to go on Broadway, I better work very hard for it, and actually act when I'm also singing, because that's part of the story.
@clockworkclementine41362 жыл бұрын
Right ? Idk, I feel like, while he is not the best singer there, he felt much more... I'd say honestly ? In his rendition ? if that makes sense ? Like, first the song was sang by Jonathan Larson to express his own feelings and stuff, so it feels maybe more of a stand up comedy/one man show concert than a musical with characters to me, and then when other actors got to play the part, well, it became more and more of a character, like, a bit detached, if that makes sense ? And I feel like Lin (and then Andrew, because the movie is touching on a bit more than the stage part) gave us something that felt closer to the feel of JOnathan Larson singing his own song, instead of a character on a stage ? IDK if I make sense, but it feels more genuine to me. and IMO, him not being the best feels actually better to me for this specific reason, Jonathan had some voice cracks and off tune moments in his own version.

Having never watched the stage version, I feel like the movie is really trying to stay true to Jonathan's life and the original musical (plays his own songs i.e. Andrew IS Jonathan, mannerisms and all), where the stage productions seems like a great musical about a guy named Jonathan, struggling with his musical.
@thisisnerd70723 жыл бұрын
That really is true. I think a lot of that comes down to the fact that the movie has two sections: Tick Tick Boom and what inspired it. We see in some songs that Karessa sings the part that represents Susan, and this works because in the stage show most often all the parts are played by two actors plus whoever is playing Jonathan. The movie stays true to this by having the musical serve as a framing device around the actual events they represent, allowing one actress to portray both Karessa (as that is who she is) and Susan (who she plays for moments in the “musical”)

Raul Esparzamo's voice is stunning in this song ❤️ Though imo this musical was made for the Garfield staring movie to happen. I mean the revamping away from Larson's one-man show. Audiences don't have to fully get the times or even the real man Larson b/c he's a vivid onscreen character. And it works for more than just artists and theatre geeks. The struggle to reach your goals in the time allotted to you is many of our struggles. And it will help to understand any future stage productions... Rent is one of the first musicals that really talked to me and I believe Larson deserves to live on even if Rent doesn't speak to the young as well as it did. The struggle, the bubble, and the shortness of time (life and chances) are even more prevalent now. Imo.
