I think the biggest take away from this is đâu can be used as a negative sentence ending particle that can be used to sort of denying/disagreeing with an aforementioned sentence. I use it time to time when accused of something like when the pudding in the fridge is gone "I didn't eat your pudding / Anh ăn bánh của em đâu" but depending on the context you can also turn a regular "I don't know" into a "How should I know" with đâu at the end.
@anguyen1551
@anguyen1551 5 жыл бұрын
"I didn't eat your pudding = Anh đâu có ăn bánh của em" Here đâu is used in front of the verb. On the other hand, if you see "Anh không ăn bánh của em đâu" it entails a present or future tense, and may mean a promise: "I won't eat your cake, promise!" (Anh sẽ không ăn bánh của em đâu" [anh hứa]). If a person say, "Anh sẽ không ăn bánh của em", it only means "I won't eat your cake", but that person can emphasize like an implicit promise: "Anh sẽ không ăn bánh của em đâu, [đừng lo]" (đừng lo =don't worry).

Verb to be in Spanish has two meanings. one is state of being. ex. I am a man . and the second means location. ex. I am home. In vietnamese I have noticed the same. State of being 'la" and location is "o" It was hard for me to understand this because I have not heard anybody in You Tube to mention this differences. I use google translator and to say it is not it says " khong phai vay. what is the meaning of "phai vay" ? But no one mentions these parts of basic grammar to start learning Vietnamese.

I'm not good at English so I don't know if you understand what I mean. An English word can have many meanings and One Vietnamese word has many meanings. It is not = Không phải vậy = Nó không phải. it = nó, not = không phải, is.... i don't know :>

Does không...đâu have more “not” emphasis than just không ?
@anguyen1551
@anguyen1551 5 жыл бұрын
Correct. Tôi không ăn thịt = "I don't eat meat". "Tôi không ăn thịt đâu" = I don't eat meat (emphatically). One can think: "Tôi không ăn thịt đâu" ="No way do I eat meat". But "no way" is a little too strong, so "đâu" [where] is in between denial and emphatic denial like in "no way". "không đâu" is a bit like "no way". Example: "không được đâu" = "no way [permissible, allowed, acceptable,...]. "Bạn không ăn ớt này được đâu, cay lắm!" = "you wouldn't be able to eat this pepper, very hot". In this case, "không ... đâu" plays the role of hypothetical or anticipatory "would not".

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT, It's really not that much, why not take a class or two and clear up many of those misconceptions and at the same time support the group you know you really love to learn Vietnamese from. Lan for instance is a very good organizer and her teachers are pretty educated. Besides, who better to learn from than a native, lives in the country speaker.
