Tiffany Chin 1987 US Nationals Long Program

After placing 4th in the compuslory figures and 3rd in the short program, Tiffany Chin drops to 4th overall at the 1987 United States Figure Championships after a 5th place in the long program. Missing the world team that year, Tiffany turned professional, missing a chance for a berth on the 1988 Olympic Winter Games team in Calgary

Thank you for posting. As with Tai Babilonia/Randy Gardener, who had to withdraw right before performing at the 1980 Olympics, it was painful to see how Tiffany would not make it to the 1988 Olympics. As with Tai and Randy, Tiffany will always be gold in my heart.

I give her a lot of credit. She was completely able to view her marks AND speak with the reporter not only in a cohesive and educated manner -- but she doesn't seem out of breath or stressed out!

Wow, thanks for posting this. I didn't realize she had: (1) switched to a new program going into the Nationals that season (although it's somewhat recycled from the 1982-83 season); and (2) changed coaches for the 2nd time in a year. She was such a beautiful skater, and I am sorry her career didn't go to far after 1985... I thought she might become unbeatable, based on the way she progressed from 1981 to 1985.

By 87 the sport had evolved into a higher plateau emphasizing jumps over artistry. Tiffany's best chance for an Olympic medal was the 84 Olympics, but she finished 4th there. By 85 is when her physical ailments began. She was so close to a World title in 85, unfortunately fell on one jump finishing second to Katarina Witt. Here watching her skate one gets the sense her best years were behind her.

After failing to qualify for the 1987 World Championships, she retired from skating and went to college at UCLA, graduating with a BA in English.

I kind of felt sorry for Tiffany Chin. She had such potential. Kind of like Jill Trenary who at least got a world title. Such promise. Her mother was a thorn in her side though I guess she provided the money. Beautiful lines but you need the jumps too.

Had she just finished fourth here she would have still made the 87 team..Tiffany tended to perform well in Worlds and I am pretty sure she would have repeated as bronze medalist because she would have most likely been 2nd going into the long program there

@cpquadskater - the Qualifier for Olympics in figure skating is the Nationals that precedes the Olympics. 88 Nats qualified for 88 Olys (and/or that is when the team is chosen.)

she simply did not have the preparation for this competition, you can see the jump technique was already deteriorating with lack of speed, height and control on the landings. Very sad because the style is impeccable and much better than anyone there, even rivaled Caryn Kadavy in terms of artistry and choreography,

David Santee was one of the worst interviewers ever. Abrupt, asked awkward questions. Remember his interview with Brian Orser after Orser lost the gold in Calgary 1988? Aggh.
