The bow stance is a common stance in most Qigong systems and martial arts. It is also used in yoga too.
The bow stance is especially beneficial for the kidneys as it pushes the energy along the back of the leg up into the kidneys. It is good for opening the psoas which has connections with digestion and much more systems of your body.
The bow stance strengthens the tendons and ligaments around your knees along with the stabilizer muscles as you push into the earth. The front leg is used to balance. 70% of the weight is along the back leg and 30% on the front. Here is one Qigong exercise that utilizes the bow stance.
