Idk, I'm newly married, in my 20s, and not a boomer but I find these things funny. Is it gut-bustingly hilarious? Nah. But it's obviously overdone for a joke. I had a stupid situation happen to me on a holiday. My now-ex (male, 28 at the time, that was messed up, btw, mentally I mean) blamed me (female, 22 at the time) that I wasn't posessive and agressive enough. He'd just seen me get screwed over by a saleswoman and had told me, still in awe, how attractive she was in comparison to me-the spineless weakling. He said I had no fire, no passion. He wanted me to get angry whenever I caught him with a woman in the kitchen, drunk touching eachother, he said; 'But you just let me get away with those things, don't you?' I said that instead I usually cried and wanted to talk. He felt that was weak. He wanted fire, passion, etc. He said thát was attractive in a woman. Since his mother had been a very controlling and posessive woman, I refused to be like that (also, that is nót me, I will not change who I am) but I temporarily settled for a quickfix and after he said that, I turned around and walked the other way in the shoppingstreet. He followed me, questioning what I was doing, after which I started ordering him around to hold my bag, shut up, hold this scarf etc. I imitated the posessive nature of his mother, the lady in the shop, I just *became* posessive for a minute or two. I held his arm tightly, pushed him around, made him wait outside the store and I downtalked every item in the store, before rushing out again with loud heels clacking on the road. After 2 minutes he grabbed me and asked what the hell I thought I was doing and why I was being a mean bitch. I explained that that is exactly what he wanted. He then silently stared at me, got his bag, walked into a random bus (that appareantely went to the right hotel?) and I nearly didn't get in in time. He ignored me throughout the busride, pushed me away and laughed whenever I fell over due to the wobbly bus. After we arrived, he walked into the lift on his own, opened the door and barely let me in, he just gave me the silent treatment as if I was a ghost. He locked himself in the bathroom, took a shower, put his pyjamas on and went to bed and turned the lights off. It had been about 45 minutes by then, not a word had been spoken. I was crying at this point and he just stared at me and said; 'I hope that warning was enough? Don't you dare try to trick me ever again!' while I profusely apologized and cried some more. (I feel it is important to mention this was the last year we were together and I had normally never 'pulled a stunt' like this, but due to sleeploss and fever-like illnesses I was more "done" than usual and decided to fight back for once. I was normally very kind (he'd have called it weak) and he never trusted me, because his mom used to be nice whenever she wanted something from him.)

I was homeless a few years ago. Mostly due to drug addiction. Unfortunately many people see both my addiction and the consequence of homelessness as a choice. But I promise you I chose none of it. Everything you said about homelessness, Jarvis, was totally on point. I deserved to be treated as human just as much then as I did before I was an addict AND now being 3.5 years clean. Every human being deserves autonomy, including financial autonomy, even if that means they buy drugs with the money they are GIFTED. If you can’t tolerate that, don’t give. We are all people doing the best we can with the situations we’re in. It’s really a very simple thing to have empathy for others.

They need clothes for the winter, shoes to walk around, they need hygienic products and maybe even a gym membership to take a shower because homeless shelters are usually packed, oh and they need to take buses. If someone already gave them food, they are no longer hungry, and its like restaurant food or anything that goes bad then they won’t be able to do it. I understand if you don’t feel comfortable giving someone money but food cannot buy you those other necessities. Is there a possibility that they’ll use it for drugs but thats not even the majority of homeless people and even if it was, I’d rather risk it if it means that person might use it for a bus. Edit: Oh and obviously they need a HOME but that is a lot harder to give to someone

@Aros4 if someone wanted to donate those things, they wouldnt go and hand them out (how would you know a homeless persons clothing size, shoe size, or other preferences?), they would just donate to some charity organization that would help get that stuff to people in need. food and water are the most basic needs, plus, if people dont have to worry as much about their food expenses, it'll be easier for them to go and cover some of their other needs (money saved is money earned).

@@perperperpen Right because substance abuse disorders are that simple. The best thing you can do for a homeless person is give them MONEY, that is what the research shows. They are adults and it is not your job to dictate what you think they should or shouldn't be allowed to do. People become homeless for countless reasons. Plus even if I knew someone was going to go buy drugs with the money I gave them I would still happily give it. At the very least they won't go into severe withdrawal on the street, especially in the states where getting into any sort of detox or rehab program costs endless amounts of money. What fuels peoples addiction is not the substance itself, it's the reasons why they turned to a substance in the first place. I can't fix the healthcare system, the housing crisis, workplace discrimination or the countless other things that contribute to homelessness but I can give a few dollars here and there and trust that that person is doing their best to survive. They may need money to pick up a prescription for something like methadone, which is a treatment option that saved my mother from her heroine addiction. But most people will not be comfortable enough telling a stranger that, regardless of if they are offering help. They may need pads or tampons, bus fare to get to a shelter or soup kitchen, they may need hygiene products. They also do not owe you an explanation of what they need. At the very least giving them money means they have their own agency in taking care of themselves. It is none of your business how they do that. Generosity should not include a transaction or control. You have no idea what that person needs. I'm sure you will come back with a reply that restates your original opinion and ignores my points so great.

Fresh food will attract rats and make your sleeping area more dangerous. If you must buy something, ask the person what they need. Often it's socks, soap, propane for their camp stove if they have one, etc. but honestly just cash is your best bet. Even if it's spent on alcohol, that's often used to make living on the street bearable.

Second of all) alcohol addiction doesn’t make someone a “fake” it makes them an addict. You really shouldn’t judge if you haven’t been an addict. As someone that has been homeless with my boyfriend due to domestic violence seeing that “skit” is really damaging. The entire time we were homeless we would get alienating stares from people assuming we were the problem. The amount of people thinking we were junkies or similar was very disheartening at an already difficult time. We were lucky enough to receive help from people (with a tent, pillows and some food) and we were eternally grateful! Perpetuating this idea that homeless people aren’t grateful is damaging. Mentally it is such a hard and scary place to be so when someone in this situation isn’t overly grateful that’s not to say they don’t appreciate the help. We were exhausted (getting a couple hours of sleep a day because we were too scared to sleep for longer because of being harassed which did happen) and in survival mode. Or to say that we are lazy. We had people say we were lazy and if we weren’t we wouldn’t be in the situation. Whereas what they didn’t see is that we had a youth social worker, we’re linked in to EVERY eligible service on waiting lists, filled out government housing applications etc. And content like this not showing the actual struggles and making people think that every homeless person thinks or is that way. Or is better off than they seem (prada shoes in the skit) is damaging.

Addiction is more complicated than “just don’t so drugs/drink”, cold turkey withdrawal from some substances (including alcohol!) can kill you. If you want to help unhoused people with addictions, advocate for infrastructure that wil support them and doesn’t force them to be clean before they get government housing, rather just trying to recover. You don’t have to give money to people, but it helps way more.

Eh, I'd say the main cause for those type of jokes is they way people are taught, since they're little kids, that the opposite gender is very different from them and that boys and girls can't just be friends, they can only be in love. So majority of people grows up thinking that they can never possibly understand their partner (since they're so different!) so why even bother? They also believe that they have to/want to get married, and by that logic it's impossible to expect your partner to be your friend as well. A lot would change if people stopped thinking about men and women as opposites or even different species.

Also just to add in reference to the homeless one: Just because they are desperate doesn't mean they should be grateful when you give them scraps or food for kids. I mean, stereotypes are fun sometimes and I'm not easily offended when it comes to my culture (Dutch) but when I watch American movies, especially around the 90's-to-2000's that have a movie in which they visit Europe (usually part 3) there is always só much made-up stuff that is just sad to watch. Oh right and the female Germans are all called Günter Schmidt (the equivalent of calling an American _woman_ *Hank* MCDonalds) and the eastern european women are all prostitutes and the Dutch people are into sniffing farts and are riddled with STD's, ready to sodomize any unfortunate tourists that fall off the tourbus. And the French are all snobby and snooty (that one might be right.) I think people get this idea that if you're poor, especially if you're unhoused, you can't have anything that gives you happiness, comfort, or levity. If you do, obviously you should have forgone it and gotten something essential instead. Because people don't see happiness as essential, they don't see withdrawals as horrific enough to make drugs essential for addicts, they don't have the compassion to understand why someone in the most awful situation would at times choose happiness as their priority.

Actually it's a lot more about lack of mental heath availability. Lots of homeless people have schizophrenia and were abandoned by mental health clinics who did not want to deal with them, so they drop them in big cities and let random civilians deal with it. Naive people really think giving them a sandwich and $20 is going to change their lives, but it doesn't even touch the real issue. In thee U.S. healthcare and mental healthcare is a luxury only the very rich can afford. You aren't going to change anybodies world by giving them $1 and some food scraps.

Just wanted to add this : Just because a homeless person has a 'nice item' does not mean they are not struggling. Many people just have what they had on them/ what they could salvage. I had a friend who was homeless for a while due to addiction. All his clothing was designer but from a years ago/ thrifted and they were only clothes he had for a while. He also had books and a guitar, some other items that were borrowed from a friend including fresh brand new clothes and a tent.

Many people with mental illness are failed by the system and end up on the streets. I’ve also been homeless myself due to a series of tragic circumstances. Some notes from a former homeless person (doing great now)- 1. just because somebody has nice clothes or some tech, like a phone, does not mean you are not poor or homeless. Most homeless people have phones. Nice coats and shoes are literally the first thing that are donated to shelters and given out. let's use some critical thinking, guys. 2. panhandlers are not scamming you. It makes literally no sense that someone with money to spare would debase themselves on a street corner as a side hustle for what... 50 bucks on a good day? Oftentimes there are actually "pit bosses" who control multiple pan-handling hotspots and take a cut from the desperate people who are panhandling there. So if you think they're scamming you- they're getting scammed just as much and it won't kill you to make their life a little easier. 3. speaking just from my experience, homeless people have no problem calling themselves homeless. The only people who say "houseless" or "unhoused people" are living in a different world. Homeless people have bigger problems and do not care nor feel degraded by the language you use to describe them. They feel degraded when you walk right past them and assume they're scammers for irrational reasons. Sorry, this was really long. Great video, thanks for inspiring my rant!

in my hometown unless you work a job related to the mines youre lucky to find a bachelor appartment that you can pay for if youre single income. but more likely you'll be renting a room in someones house. the homelessness is affecting everyone regardless of morals. in north ontario the prices of rent and food keep going up but nobody is getting paid more. winter had been rather mild but when it gets cold many will likely die. the shelters are overflowing and constantly at capacity.

We talked for a bit. She was one of the nicest, loveliest people I’ve met on public transit. TLDR; not everyone will be grateful. for a lot of people who need money, there's two really common reasons they won't take coins or small amounts-- 1. they're just generally not doing awesome and taking just two dollars feels too low/desperate. poverty fucks with you and so does a lifetime of capitalist conditioning. not everyone is ready to accept that two dollars is a lot of money to them 2. small bills and coins can be much harder to use and carry, and especially when in small amounts, they often aren't worth the trouble. especially with coins, they're pretty easily lost/stolen and basically useless

Also, the whole Prada shoes bullshit they try to do in that sketch... As Jarvis pointed out, it's a sketch character created by rich assholes and not a real person. But also, if a homeless person has one thing that seems to be a luxury to you, maybe consider why they might have it? If this person already owned Prada shoes at some point in their life before they became homeless, should they need to get rid of those shoes to appear "needy" enough to deserve pity and help? It really makes me angry when people see a homeless person and say some garbage like "they had a smartphone, clearly they don't have it that bad and they're secretly lazy and spoiled." Reminds me of that shitty Fox News "Did you know poor people have refrigerators?" segment.

There was a story I heard once where this woman went missing, right and then she was found years later, like panhandling on the street or whatever, but what actually happened where she had severe schizophrenia and didn’t know who she was didn’t know anything was so out of touch with reality because of that, but she was like homelessbut she wasn’t without a home she just needed help that she did not know she needed so like whenever I see someone homeless like I always think like you never know why they’re there and I feel like people should stop seeing homeless people as one narrative, and like a monolith

I cannot even FATHOM being upset by someone not liking the food I brought in this situation. Just because their homeless doesn't mean they suddenly lose their allergies, dietary restrictions, etc. Sure, living on the street means they maybe aren't often able to avoid that stuff, but I would absolutely try my hardest to get them something they can ACTUALLY EAT. What good is a lunchable for 5 dollars with 3 slivers of pepperoni and 4 crackers? You could buy them a McDonald's meal for similar/slightly more and it might actually fill them up and he'll them retain energy. I think it's so dehumanizing and disrespectful to assume or believe that a homeless person should lose the right to choice. I hate the stigma around homeless people. It never fails to tick me off

Also… an unhoused person having nice or expensive stuff doesn’t necessarily mean anything. There’s many reasons they could have it. Maybe they lost their housing fairly recently and still have it from before then, maybe someone gave them a really nice gift, maybe they won it somehow, maybe it was heavily on sale, maybe it’s fake. And even if they are an addict and even if that is part of how they ended up in these circumstances….. so? Addiction needs to not be so demonized. Especially since a lot of addictions weren’t necessarily taken up by choice (ie someone getting an injury, being prescribed painkillers while they heal, and then they get addicted or even being prescribed medication for mental health stuff that they then get addicted to like OxyContin). Also…. even if they do spend the money you give them on drugs….. it’s not exactly like they can just “make the responsible choice” and not do so. Not only will their body physically not let them just decide they’re done now but…. a lot of addictions can be very very very dangerous to try to quit on a dime. Like…. literally you can die. It’s not exactly the same, but having had withdrawals from one of my prescriptions that was forgotten when getting everything refilled….. yeah it’s BRUTAL. Now in my case it wasn’t gonna kill me or anything, it wasn’t the kind of medication to have that severe a withdrawal. But I was…. not myself. At one point I literally started crying, or rather my body did, when I didn’t emotionally feel the need to. Like it wasn’t even me reaching a breaking point in the tense conversation (which does happen a lot) but my body just…. physically decided it was time to cry. I actually physically couldn’t not cry. It was just…. happening. And that’s pretty tame as far as withdrawals go. Like…. what I had is nothing. It gets much much much worse!

I’ve always liked how my dad helps the homeless where he lives, it’s a big city with a lot of people who fake being homeless for free money so he doesn’t want to just give out cash so he likes to have backpacks (cheap but not used) with a clean button up shirt, some clean pants and basic supplies like water and canned fruits and veggies. If you don’t want to give money but do want to give something to help people don’t give just scraps to make yourself feel better you can easily give things that a regular items

As someone who works on a block with a severe homeless problem. If I give money and they spend it on “bad” vices, I don’t care. They still live another day. Me and everyone around me do what we can. We are also trying to survive. Everyone around me has built a connection with specific homeless people and then found out they died. It’s up to the people in power to do something. While they don’t. We do what we can. You can have a shitty health situation and become homeless. You’re right Jarvis. The system is the real issue. That bothers me the most about the homeless person bit. I set my boundaries with many of them, but at the end of the day, I want them to be okay and safe. And if the vices let them survive. Then do the vices.
