In Bella's defense, I and several of my school peers weren't really taught about the Japanese army's involvement in world war 2 outside of pearl harbor. So before this video, I didn't really know that the flag design was akin to the Nazi Germany flag design. This is why schools should thoroughly teach history and not leave anything out. And at first I thought the design of the tattoo looked really cool before JUST NOW learning about the meaning of the rising sun design

Also let’s be real the U.S. education system is pretty shit and I was born and raised in Hawaiʻi just like she was and we never really learned the meaning behind the flag or really learned about Japan’s atrocities. I only remember seeing the flag off to the side in a textbook once in school that was as much as I saw it or heard of it in school. I feel like we should also question more why the Japanese navy still uses it to this day. I mean Japan still uses it to celebrate different things and Japan even refused to ban it from the Olympic. I’ve seen more people talk about Bella’s tattoo then I’ve seen try to talk about it still being in use.

In defense of Bella's ignorance: in my high school when we learned about WWII, we learned NOTHING about the Japanese and their involvement until the attack of Pearl Harbor, and were nearly never mentioned again after that. It wasn't until I started watching historical anime that I even saw the rising sun or discovered that it had a negative connotation. I am much more educated about it now, and props to Bella for doing the same.

About the Bella Poarch tattoo scandal, I understand where she's coming from about not knowing the history behind it because I never knew about the Rising Sun flag. Through all of my years in history class my teachers never mentioned anything about the Rising Sun in WWII we learned briefly about WWII but teachers always seem to skip over the important parts and stay on parts only regarding America, Britain, and France. Speaking of tiktok trends When that trend was going around where people would hairspray a heart on a mirror and *light it on fire* there were several instances of kids trying it and almost burning down their family homes because they were playing with fire The Bella Porsh tat was confusing for me at first I live in the US and we don't really get taught the former flags of countries! We only get taught the modern ones We don't get taught the flag used during the Holocaust as "the former German flag" it's just the flag that represents that event I don't even remember if we even actually went over the historical events in Japan in school because 99% of what we learn is almost exclusively about things relating to the US/events that impacted the US in some way/shape/form The only people who would know about the Sun Rising flag's significance in my specific school district are the people who took an extra non-mandatory class exclusively about WW2

I can defend Bella not having knowledge of the rising sun tattoo because I never knew of this. I have only seen the flag design once and have thought it was the country's flag before they redesigned it to what we see today. My knowledge of Japan during WW2 was that they were on Germany's side, they were responsible for Pearl Harbor (which basically caused us to join WW2), and we bombed Hiroshima with a nuclear bomb. My school's history classes only talked about Germany and Hitler, etc. These things like flag designs are seen as small details that don't need to be shared. I had a history class where we talked about Buddhism and it was only until this year, while I was looking on Google maps of where I wanted to visit in Japan, that I found out the real origins of the swastika. If you flip the swastika symbol horizontally, it's the symbol of Buddhism. Hitler took that design and flipped it into what everyone knows as the Nazi's swastika. When I had that class on Buddhism about 4 years ago, this was never brought up. If you look at some Buddhist temples on Google maps, you will find the flipped swastika symbol because it's the religion's symbol. So when people saw this, they accused Google of either having a glitch, or being Nazi supporters. This wouldn't have happened if schools taught these controversial things. If schools taught about the rising sun, then Bella wouldn't have gotten the tattoo. If schools taught about the history of Buddhism and the German's involvement surrounding the swastika, people wouldn't be so quick to judge things being Nazi related.

For the Bella situation, I don't necessarily want to defend her (even tho she's trying to move on from it and change), but my school wasn't necessarily taught about Imperial Japan. They taught us events almost everyone knew or very important battles that changed the tide for certain countries. I don't even think most of my classmates from highschool knew the Japan from WW2 was Imperial Japan and had a different flag than today's version. I literally knew all of this from a fandom called Countryhumans (not the best fandom tho.. please don't look into it, it's horrible)

6:33 I am in no way excusing her having this tattoo but I just wanted to clarify, Bella Poarch did not grow up in America so the school system and curriculum may be different. Also, when she went on the H3H3 Podcast as a guest, she explained how she was extensively abused as a kid, one of the things she says is that she was made to clean up their animal's poop in the morning and she wouldn't be allowed to shower or change her clothes before going to school, I can't remember but I'm pretty sure she said that kids would bully or make fun of her at school over this, so it would make sense if she was distracted or not paying attention in history class edit: typo

The Chinese government most likely is the reason that those things are being censored on TikTok. It happened to a game I play, which used to be made by a company based in china. They moved so they’re now located in a different country, I don’t remember which one, and the censorship has gotten a bit better. But before they moved they even had to release alternate outfits for some female characters that were optional for overseas players but mandatory for Chinese ones. The new outfits covered a lot more skin, which isn’t automatically a bad thing, but it has a negative connotation when it’s due to censorship. They were also going to have to remove any male characters that were too “feminine” and women that were too “strong”. The in-game chat is pretty censored still but otherwise everything’s a lot better now. Fuck the CCP’s control over everything, that shit’s insane.

I just wanna note on the comment about studying ww2 in history class, as someone who's from the US and didn't go to the best school district, I don't think I ever learned about the Japanese flag in history. For some reason in us history classes, it's pretty uncommon to talk about what Japan did in ww2. The most we learned about related to the Japanese is pearl harbor and the camps set up in the US for the Japanese. I didn't learn about what they did in ww2 until early adulthood. Of course that was in the early-mid 2000s so we didn't have such easy access to the internet like we do now. I know a lot of people in my generation that also didn't learn about what Japan did in ww2 in school either for some reason. Maybe it was the same for her but at the same time, with such easy access to the internet now, I don't understand how it's possible unless she has absolutely no interest in history

I would say a 19 and 13 year old could have stuff in common, but only in certain scenarios/conditions, like I personally have gotten along with people much younger than I, of course I've never had feelings for people that much younger than I, the largest gap I've ever in between me and someone whom I've had feelings for was a 2 years gap. I am currently 19 right now, but yeah I would say at most 3 years gap would be okay, but with more years you'd have to be both adults 18 and above. Anyway I only know some stuff in common is possible cause I have two younger siblings, one 5 years younger than me, the other 10 years younger, which like I said, a certain condition. So yeah a 19-20 year old with a 13 year old is really pushing it in terms of relationships, like 6 years is yikes for me if they the consenting people aren't already both adults, if they were both adults, I wouldn't honestly care, but cases like this, I wouldn't want that relationship to continue due to the risk of harm happening to the minor involved and well, it just ain't right to allow that to continue if one of them is legit an adult more than 2-3 years older than them.

Latina Canadian here, and while I try to know...several things ( I remember being surprised at my adult brother not knowing why there were so many black Latinos in South American countries), I did not have the connection of the rising sun flag. That THOSE atrocious crimes the Japanese imperial army inflicted (that i did know about), were done in the service of what that flag represented. So, thank you! Yes, I "somehow" didn't know, I'm glad you explained it, and now I have a better grasp of historical symbols. Really goes to show what gaps we can all still have :o

About Bella's Tattoo, I don't know much. Where I live you learn WW2 every year for 5 years bit never once the teachers told us about the japanese imperial army
@annieaniiee
@annieaniiee 2 жыл бұрын
I will say about the Bella Poarch tattoo that even tho we are taught World War 2 history here in America, It always depends per school. They all teach differently and in my school, they never mentioned or taught us about the meaning behind the Rising Sun Japanese flag nor its meaning at the time. We mostly focused on Nazi Germany, pearl harbor, and the day it all came crashing down on nazi warfare when everything was finally over. When it comes to things like this, it's really upsetting to find out these things AFTER SCHOOL. We should've learned about a lot of stuff that is significantly horrible and their meaning so we know what to avoid in our futures and so we can educate others. It pisses me off to this day that I was never taught anything about the massacre of the POC community in OK long ago as well as the Rosewood massacre too. I didn't know about either of those till I was 23. All in a, schools need to do better. Educate the dark things. It may not be something you want to learn about but at least knowing about it could prevent hurt and horror in the future.

I don’t think Bella did anything wrong? Most people, even in America, don’t recognize that the Imperial flag is a hate symbol. Red lines don’t make something a symbol of hate. People get pissed off for literally zero reason.

If someone got a swastika tattooed and had no idea of it's issues, does that make it ok? Regardless of her awareness, it doesn't make her actions OK. Plus, not every country has the fucked up history teachings that America does. Most other countries are fully aware of this issue.... Very small minded.

They have reason to be pissed off, really. It's just the hate just being thrown at without knowing the context from the other side (Bella). Just to be frank about this- the history of what Japan did during WWII is not discussed because what they did was... in the best way to put it: it made the German soldiers of WWII *LOOK LIKE THE GOOD GUYS.* For example, if you really don't know, look up Unit 731. And then after that, please look at videos of kittens and puppies because that is only ONE part of the Japanese history that's not discussed. Then, after that, if you can stomach it, look up Nanking. There's a certain image that I saw when I was attending college about Nanking and I didn't understand it until my professor explained what it was. You're going to *NEED* those kitten and puppy videos. Also not defending Bella or the tattoo she had. She was purely ignorant and her being Filipino makes it worse on her part because it means her family never discussed it with her *OR* she actively avoided subjects that discussed the atrocities Japan committed. I believe the latter because I've met so many people who actively avoid discussions about the atrocities Japan committed during WWII and just continue to say how America was messed up for bombing the two cities in Japan at the time (not justifying that of course, but after knowing the history, it's hard to see Japan as completely innocent).
