Hey Heath, enjoy your videos. The wall will need to be 'keyed in' to the base soil and drainage added to remove water from behind the wall. Dig a trench where the wall is to reside, and fill with drain rock and a perforated pipe to remove water. The base course of rock should be about 6" below the surface of the ground to keep it from creeping away from the wall face when the ground gets wet. Terracing is a great idea. Use that for garden space. That back hill has concerned me for a while now. Glad to see it getting some attention. Bless you and your family!

Built a huge rock wall on my first home and I still jump on google street view sometimes to see it... I was in my early 30s and used a rented tractor with just a front loader. The main rock was about 8000 lbs and I was teetering back and forth when moving it. That was near 30 years ago and my work still looks good. Do hard things when you are young and you can look back with pride and satisfaction for the rest of your life.

I can hear the joy and satisfaction in your voice to be working on the trail and the retaining wall, two projects you've been itching to do for a long time.

An observation tower on top of that mountain would be awesome. I can definitely see some sunset picnics up there.

I appreciate the care you take with the management of the trees. I do wonder if folks realize just how fast (at least here in the South) the forest makes a comeback, even from a clear cut. I had a messy area cleaned out by a forestry mulcher and as soon as it got warm and rained, bam, seedlings everywhere.
@baskervillebee60976 ай бұрын
You are going to have a beautiful cook out site with picnic tables for family gatherings all surrounded by the boulders.

Tree/ forest management is smart land stewardship! Please don't feel bad, when people who don't understand, attack you for your land management. Your homestead is really developing and it is a pleasure to watch. Keep up the great work!

Forest management also reduces the risk of being overcome during fire season. All the switch backs will act as fire breaks too. Smart move.

Been watching you guys for a LONG time now. Wanted to say this project is one I'm lookimg forward too more than anything you've accomplished Bud. It's the landscaper in me. I did a one course boulde retaining wall after battling with the township here in South Jersey equalijg 10.5 tons of boulders & your wall will make mine look like adging stones😂. Knowing you for the perfectionist you are I'm sure the wall will be "re-worked" a few times. Can't wait to see it finished. Blessings to your family & greeting from South Jersey USA🙏💯🇺🇸

I like your idea of the retaining wall. At first I was like oh he should dig a small ditch and put it on the rocks in. And then in the subsequent shots I saw that’s exactly what you were doing. We think a lot of like at least, in terms of building things. Man would I love to come visit you guys!😊

Wow! A lot of things are going on! My eldest had his first driving lesson from me when he was eleven. Same age I was when my dad taught me. Jeep looks so fine. Wish it was mine! And the table in the back? Perfect for the loft area. Trail is wonderful, and the view from there is enough to bring tears of joy to my eyes. Wow! Good use of those boulders lining the drive. Those terraces will give you more flat surfaces to work with for gardens and whatever else your hearts desire. This has been a Wonderful Visit! Thank you so very much! Blessings on all of your endeavors!

Awe, I loved seeing your driveway lined with the boulders! Progress I know, and the retaining wall is much needed.
@mindeloman6 ай бұрын
I saw the boulders along the driveway as limiting. If they invited a bunch of people over for a big summer to-do, those boulders would keep people from using available parking in the front yards. It's something I mentally noted. I know they don't entertain much but the whole point in finishing the shop was to be able to entertain more.

Many projects have come and gone over the last few years. Maybe I missed something, I do not know why gable end siding never got made and installed. Cannot think any pending changes that end of the shop.

i think you should do a double (or triple) terrace to minimize drainage concerns - then you wont have to mess with it again - put some steps in and a patio/grill along with gardens - trail work looks good but will take a couple more passes, more tree removal and gravel before you can start in on ranch out back - hope you can keep grinding - the tough part is the prep

Not sure if it is possible to retrofit a trailer hitch on your excavator or not but it would sure save you time not having to move both truck and excavator both directions with every load of rock. I am not sure your excavator has a low enough cog to keep it from tipping. Seems you have been able to build everything else you need. Good luck. Wish I had access to all those rocks.

Seeps... Yup. Dig a hole, half fill it with round rock. (No jagged or crushed stuff.) Put a dam around the front with cut up old plastic barrels. Stick a pipe through the dam, into the heart of the rocks. Finish filling with the round rock. Cover over the top with a couple layers of 6 mil plastic. Bury all that in clay, and then soil. Now you have legally developed a spring. You'll have spring water with no ground water getting into it, if done right.

Why not try a few buckets of four parts sand one part line with water added to make a thick mix as mortar to hold those big rocks together and help keep them from rowing around. This is a kind of mortar used to build the old castles and château in Europe in the 1516 and 1700s. Much less damaging than using cement and I'm sure it's a lot cheaper than cement. At least this way you can direct which way the water flows around this boulders. Try it you may like it. ❤😊👋🏼

I bid on a small landscaping project in 1974. The architect called for some large accent stones. I called the local rock quarry and they quoted me $56 per ton delivered. I don't know what they get today, but if you were near a large city , you would have a gold mine 🤣

Am just thinking about needing to add drainage behind that wall. I owned a 2006 Jeep Liberty, loved it. Rear seat window motors went out. ??? Were never really used. Finally the a/c went, and it was time to trade it in. About 4 or 5 trade ins back, has to be one of the most reliable vehicles for the Western Pennsylvania Gal.

It is too bad you probably cannot afford to lay down road fabric and 4 to 6 inches or more of gravel. That would probably cost a small fortune. I love what you are doing on your land, Heath. I remember when I was 12 and hunting with my Dad. He would let me shift gears from the front passenger seat. He would push in the clutch and I would shift the gearshift lever. Fond memories. I drove only manual transmissions for the first 24 years of my Driving Life. Great Video. Thanks for sharing!

I have to admit it drives me to distraction that the house still needs staining, the water storage shed still needs siding, as does the shop, the bathroom, second bedroom and rec area in the shop need finishing, BUT you are raising great, responsible young adults with love, encouragement and patience, you love and respect your wife and she you, you respect the earth, but not at the cost of the safety and survival of your family, you tell wonderful stories AND play great music. So what is there to complain about. OH! And building that retaining wall is far more important than anything I listed. A terraced garden will look fantastic and add real value to your lives. Please be careful and stay safe.

I just started this video but regardless I think that hillside needs to be cut off and backed up further away from the house before you put the wall up in my opinion. You could dig out that hillside With the excavator and I know you do not have a dozer but it needs to be dug out and graded so you don’t have such a steep hillside that close to the house and shop. I know that’s the Negative in building that close to that big hillside & at the time the only place you had access to that was close to being level, so I know you’re just making do with what you have to work with. Would be nice to have a Dozer with a angulated blade to grade off that hillside somewhat to make it less steep that close to the house. I hope you get it all worked out, would be nice to have a graded flat place behind the house to build a greenhouse. God Bless ya Skinner family. 😁👍🏼
