I love outfit tension and dissonance. It works great for me and my blends - an outfit that fully matches just looks off on me. My top two style roots are sun and moon even. But definitely not everybody needs it. I think it started trending so that people felt like they didn’t have to overthink their outfits but they’ve now swung the pendulum all the way so now tension is being overthought. As a side note: I wore my birkenstocks last night! I wore them with a burgundy striped button up shirt fully unbuttoned and half tucked, over a graphic tshirt that has a UFO and magical creatures (& other stories UFO should bring it up if you’re curious), and jogger style jeans.

You're so right - as soon as someone has a new idea it becomes the ONLY idea that matters and... ends up being overthought 🫠 I think it's the effortless or accidental tension that works the best. Trying to affect it just feels strange, like we're trying too hard and completely missed the point 😅 Birkis fpr life!! 🥰

I really relate with the idea of trying too much to add "tension" or "dissonance" - I've found that when I am focusing so much on that, my personal style and comfort get lost in the pursuit of putting together a capital O Outfit 🤌 Honestly, some of my favorite looks recently have come from combining personal style with context (i.e. weather, activities that day etc.) and it's so much simpler than having to wrack your brain on how to create juxtaposition. I've got 2 littles 3 and under, I don't have the brainspace for juxtaposition all the time 😂 Looking forward to your 2025 wardrobe goals video! 🥰

You hit the nail on the head. It's all about the accidental juxtaposition - as soon as we try too hard it falls to pieces 🫠 Ain't nobody got time for that!! 🥰

I’ve been thinking about taking a pic of my outfit of the day and sending it to my niece for her opinion. Thanks for the assignment!!! PS your accent is LOVELY!

It's so great to have as a reference point! I swear by it and have to keep reminding myself to do it too 🥰

I absolutely relate to the “saying no to the harshness” part. Also, I have a one year old and another on the way, and I am so lost in my personal style. Every time I’m pregnant/freshly postpartum/back at “normal”, I feel like I prefer different styles and it is so hard to keep up!!! Esp with the changing body and changing seasons mixed. Not to mention the breastfeeding friendly part… 😂🤪😮💨

Omg it is fully a whirlwind. There is SO much that changes and gets shaken up along the way (you are doing AMAZING by the WAY!!! 💖) I can't even give good style advice because I literally went potato mode for those years and am just coming out of it now 😭😤 comfort is key, ease is key, keeping things simple and trust to the pregnancy and new mama glow to take care of the rest 😆🥰

@ ngl I teared up a little bit reading this, thank you 🥲🩷 the validation for the potato outfits meant more than I can say

The tone of that cashmere tee is perfect for you ! What size did you get, I feel we are similar sizes but I have 0 experience with jcrew sizing.

I went with the XS which is perfect! This colour is snow, I like that it somehow has a tint of pink in it - the blue version look lovely also 🥰🦋 probably don't need 2 cashmere tees going into the warmest season for me here 😂

I’m quite tired of hearing the advice about how you must have tension! I love serenity and coherence, monochromatic even if it’s head to toe red, I can’t do contrasted colours or styles. Anybody else? Or is it just me. Maybe it’s got to do with your essence whether or you can tolerate contrast or of you need a coherent ‘flow’
@AlannaLightheart14 күн бұрын
I actually fully hear you 🤗 I feel like it looks so gooood I mean look at Anouk Yve for instance. It must be a case where "both are true" and you're right with the essence compatibility - probably it's a case by case business. Anyone with a more playful essence probably enjoys more contrasting elements... it's more about fitting it to YOU and your taste than fitting into A LOOK or aesthetic. Making all your choices based on your preferences for what looks and feels good 🙌💖 and the better you know yourself, the easier those choices then become!

I love this comment and the conversation around it. I agree! I tihnk tension has become a kind of fashion buzzword and I too love coherence and calmness in my wardrobe and I wear monochrome a lot. But, I have not been able to get the idea of "tension" out of my head since I first heard it a while back. At first, I strongly disagreed. But, over the months, I've since decided that my hair creates that tension (it's kind of wild, especially for someone over 50; think Tracee Ellis Ross vibes) in contrast to my otherwise calm coherence. And, I love head to to red (note my profile pic)! Red creates it's own tension, always.

@roxanebethjohnson3594 Thank you for chiming in! 🥂 I also feel like the tension came as this rebellion against conformity, a way to distinguish yourself from the crowd. It's so fascinating the push and pull - and like you said, it could be the element of colour or just how your hair is 🥰✨️

I agree, even though I like some tension or contrast in my outfits, it’s not for everyone. Today, it was streetwear with fancy earrings and a silk scarf!

I think tension can mean different things to different people - and I have nothing against a coherent and calm look! But maybe the tension or point of interest comes from a relaxed fit of a typical tailored piece or a personal piece of jewellery - somethingthat reads a bit of different to you and not necessarily to others.
