I recently heard that “do you know your great grandparents names” question to show that you don’t “live on” through your family but the point still stands that you can do things to leave a legacy in your family that will impact your great-grandchildren and onward whether they know your name or not. I don’t know my paternal grandfathers parents full names, but because they left an example of strong Christian faith, my grandfather did the same in his family and that has left a family legacy of faith that impacts future generations. My mom grew up in a nominally Christian home but she changed that in our household and that will impact my children and their children and so on.

I brought my aunt to the cemetery to put flowers on her husband's grave. She commented about all the graves that had not been visited in over 50 years as none of them had a plant or flower growing and said 'My grandchildren will have no idea where i am even berried. No one will ever come here after my children die. After one generations, perhaps two, you are completely forgotten". My own great grand parents are berried in Europe somewhere. I don't even know their names.

I have a great story about things we don't think about like who our ancestors were. I know a woman who had a near death experience. I am not sure how long she was dead but when she crossed over there were THOUSANDS and thousands of people there all happy to see her and greeting her. She had no idea who these thousands of people were but one of them told her 'these are your ancestors going back thousands of years here to greet you'.

The most important things in life are not things or having the biggest home or belonging to the best country club or the most successful in business or your children or grandchildren are best in so many areas or in the best private schools. I want my family to love God first with all their hearts and this makes you the most successful, loving God with all your heart and teaching your children that God is first- the being in the popular group, or being the best is temporary, but God’s love is eternal

Going back 29 generations, my 29 great grandfather was Ravn Haub - he died in the year 980. And a priest in our parish has Ravn Haub as his 30th grandfather. His side of the family migrated through Norway, down through Sweden and ended up as traders in Germany. My side of the family became Vikings and invaded itself in the year 1066. My side of the family also had several generations after the year 1310 (when St. Olaf died) where in the first born sons were all priests.

This was really a tremendous video Fr. Mike! I grew up in the Netherlands, where they have some words which are in the roam of 'hevel' - one is 'mist' (fog - I think this is the one most nearby 'hevel'), another is 'rook' (smoke). The Dutch also have a saying with the last one which is particularly interesting in this week - 'waar rook is, is vuur' (where there is smoke, there is fire). I'll try to stay aware of my existing as fog (as we and our lives, as you said, are really only some fog that will fade away and has no meaning whatsoever, that's for certain for me), but in the same time I want to focus on the fire that Christ is trying to set in me (I do my best not to stay oblivion to that), so that just a little bit of smoke will get the attention of people who don't want to smell it, but need to

Hello Father Michael: After my husband died 4 years ago I think about dying all the time. But it scares me and depressed me. Seems like nothing really matters
@lukebrasting51082 жыл бұрын
The only thing that really matters is love because the only thing we can take with us in the life to come is what we have given away here on earth. Our relationship with our Creator, ourselves and eachother is what matters because we all we can take with us from this life is the quality of our love. That's not a depressing thought, it's actually liberating because it helps us ton dettach from material goods and pleasures and vain pursuits and reorients us to what is really important in life.

It will take me some time to get in the habit of contemplating my death w/o getting morbid about it. Less than 10 yrs ago, I was suffering from depression to the point of actually trying to kill myself. None of my attempts worked, perhaps miraculously, and every time, I felt punished by having to go on living. So, this is definitely something I'll have to warm up to . . . Carefully.
@mynameisYumi2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that, but I hope you're in a better space now! If thinking about death is too much, perhaps it helps to think "how do I want to live today?" instead. At the end of the day, I think fr mike's point is to not blindly chase meaningless, frivolous things as so many people do. The one thing I would like to add to fr mike's homily (on the point about "not doing"), is that it's hard to stop old ways of thinking - unless you have something else to replace that. For example, one way to stop chasing is to start living, by being present and appreciating each day for what it is, both it's good and bad. Granted, that's easier said than done, but if you're gonna set your eyes on something to chase, it might as well be something life-giving
@irishgirlintexas2 жыл бұрын
I definitely hear that, about having to replace the old way of thinking. My reversion to Christianity was actually through an evangelical nondenominational. Had a slight Pentecostal bent, but I guess that's the place I needed at that time. Not much talk about it at all, while I dealt with some of my demons over the years. Something must've worked in that time, because it's a long, awful, sometimes scary story but I didn't get back to that dark place. Did a number on my marriage, but it and my mental health came out the other side, beaten and bruised but intact. Then, just last winter, the Holy Spirit nudged me in the direction of Catholicism. I felt like every other place in town didn't fit. We went to the Christmas Eve vigil. First service I'd ever been to, and hardly a word was said to us, but the Presence/atmosphere made it the most welcoming place of any kind I'd ever been in. Now we're in July, and I've found out that I was baptized Catholic as a baby, so my husband and I are going to attend RCIA this September. Our goddaughter is getting baptized Catholic, too. It's just all coming together, in spite of when things don't turn out, because those things don't make the same crippling impact they used to. Wow, this ended up being a lot longer than I thought it would be before 8am.
