How tight is belt supposed to be? How much movement is ok. 1/4, 1/2 inch what? Or just pull pin and your done?

Nice job, hit all the points keep it up, also you can use metal office clips w/ slit rubber tubes glued on the edges to hold the cam gears, the levers fold down so you rarely knock them loose, I use 1" or 2" and stuff a pc of hose between the gears to lock them. 25yr ASE Master Tech/ Shop Owner

this is more of a trouble shooting question... I was in the process of replacing water pump and removing the timing belt and i have a little single wire that runs through the timing chamber and behind the alternator. But im not sure where its plugs in at. I have just the metal prong on the end but no idea where it goes. any help would be awesome

Hi do my cams timing marks have to be perfect or they can be slightly off but within marks?
@BigAlWillis5 жыл бұрын
little trick is to use long bolts & washers . put them between both cam sprockets and gently snug them down. each cam sprocket holds the other , bolt/washers in the middle. that way they wont move.

My timing belt slipped a cog two times now. Not happy Jan. Got it apart to re set the timing but noticed the belt was slack. likely the hydrolic tensioner fail? The Sorento v6 is a powerful motor and the only reason I bother with it. The clutch is another weak point and mine overheats and slips on occasion..

was the special tool you referred to a spanner? or did you simply use snap ring pliers?

I did all this correctly and still had a timing problem. After several retries, I found that the back timing sensor plate behind the crankshaft sprocket did not line up correctly. I pried them off then realigned them, they should all be locked together. After I put them back on the shaft I re-timed the engine. Power came right back up and have had not problem since. Most mechanics are unaware of this problem.

+Peter Krempely back cams have a 7.3 pitch and a 8.7 pitch. they don't line up to the marks like he shows in this video.

How do you know you are at TDC on Cylinder 1? Cylinder 1 is in the back and you would need to take the plug out to test if it is at TDC. Can you use Cylinder 4 (middle front) as a proxy?

Question...camshaft timing marks are located too one side of ridge (lower) and tooth (higher). Does this have too line directly in center of gage on the side? Or do both line the lower ridge directly on the gauge? It looks like both the tooth and ridge part of camshaft is set in center of gauge.
@fixingcarsandstuff9 жыл бұрын
Carrvalier Islar Should be very close, did you try to line up the marks before taking off the belt?
@dave59919 жыл бұрын
The Belt was off before setting too TDC. Had too reset everything too zero with new belt. Have it running now and sounds good . But i set the gear tooth(high part) directly on gauge It fit the belt length..The mark on crank shaft normaly a dot on tooth gear not bye the side which this one has so i questioned the postion.

Any reason why there is slack in the timing belt after installation? I have ran the engine after setting the tensioner and it runs great but shortly after you can feel the slack on the timing belt. Any advice?
@wildwindsorman3 ай бұрын
The belt tightens when running with oil powered tensioner, You must manually take the slack out when you install new belt, oil pressure takes car of it after.

I have to get in and do this to my 2006 Sorrento come Monday. Not looking forward to it, but the shop is trying to charge me $1300 for the same job...I'll save the money on labor. Also, I ran codes and it came back with camshaft sensor and crankshaft sensor, any tips for replacing those as well, and also, will replacing both sensors and belt get that damn CEL off? Thanks for the video!
@fixingcarsandstuff10 жыл бұрын
Well hard to believe that both sensors are bad. If/when you do the timing belt job, line up the marks and see if they are in fact lined up. could maybe be off a tooth and may cause one of those codes... Maybe use the money you save on the belt to pay some one to diagnose why those two codes...
@Jwile110 жыл бұрын
so I did the job, lined everything up perfectly put it all back together and the belt seems like it's working great. The only problem is now my engine runs really rough and I'm getting a misfire code on valve 3 and an 02 bank 1 sensor 1 code. bent shaft? any ideas?

justin re check your timing. i have an 03 sedona in right now that a diyer did. odds are your intake cam is off. there is a part that was missed in this vid. kia says after you get all the somebitches lined up and you are really angry by now you need to mechanicaly set the tension by get this... rotating the engine backward 1/4 turn then back to TDC and re chek the marks. IF they line up pull the pin on the tensioner and then rotate thru 2 revolutions and wait 5 mn. Ten measure the tens rod protrusion and i should be between 3 and 4 mm. if not repeat the timing procedure. If this isnt done there is the potential for the belt to slip and timing will be off. the diyer had the same issue youre having except his was on 3 and 5. so id look to be safe

Do you have the timing belt on or are you still trying to line up the crankshaft and camshaft timing marks? Maybe shoot some pictures or a quick video showing what you are having issues with and upload them to YT
