One of the most humble players in the game. A Legend for many reasons. May you continue playing professionally for another 20 years. Also, i was wondering why he has not hired someone to do these tasks. But then i self-answered, which could be right, that top players do not like even the slightest mistake on their equipment. Also, they can themselves feel the equipment and ensure that it is 100% according to their need.
@ericzeigler86694 жыл бұрын
Timo said he usually has a larger scale to weigh those rubbers. Timo is a legend in table tennis, but he has no idea how to weigh things. He should have found something rigid and square that could be tared before weighing the rubbers. He had edges of the rubber square touching the table which ruined the weigh in. If weight was important, why didn't Timo weigh the bare blades too? Once knowing the rubber weights, why not pick and choose the rubbers that he wanted in appropriate pairs? Great player. Lab skills...not so much.
@lerdan4 жыл бұрын
@@ericzeigler8669 the total weight of the racket is not important. also you can weight the assembled racket and subtract the weight of each rubber. but it is not the point. he weights the rubbers because the lighter rubber means less dense sponge, which could be softer.
@ericzeigler86694 жыл бұрын
@@lerdan I disagree that the total weight of the racket is not important. I am not nor have I ever been an "elite" table tennis player . I won the South Carolina state championship twice in the early 70's. It was important to me back then as an "OK" player. The weight of the racket is still important even if you dismiss this fact.
@lerdan4 жыл бұрын
@@ericzeigler8669 again, you have to watch the video carefully. Timo plays with Timo Boll ALC blade. All of them have similar weight (+/- production tolerance). He is not going to switch to another blades because some other blade models are lighter. The weighting process is to figure out which rubber is HARDER or SOFTER. Also what is the point of weighting the BARE blades if he can weight the assembled racket at any point now with RUBBERS on them. Isn't it what matters the most and not the weight of the bare blade?
@ericzeigler86694 жыл бұрын
@@lerdan Let me clarify. The total weight of the racket fully assembled is important. Since the bare blade is part of this weight, it is important. You write as if the bare blades are all the same weight, which is wrong. Then you suggest my comments require Timo to entirely change the model of the racket that he uses to something lighter and unfamiliar. You need to improve your reading comprehension. The weight of the racket includes the blade, rubber, edge tape and chack required to glue it together. Your total weight minus rubber weight is not equal to the weight of the blade since the other items weigh also. Why would I have to watch the video carefully? Of course Timo uses the Timo Boll ALC blade. That's what he's paid to play with. It's intuitively obvious to the most casual observer that the total weight of the assembled racket is important, regardless of rubber hardness.
@jorgefigueroa3383 Жыл бұрын
Hi, Timo. I'm 61 years young and very enthusiastic about table tennis. My way to glued the rubbers is more quick, and I think it is because I didn't have more experience doing that. I have been learning little by little, and with your video, I just learned that is safe to let the glue dry completely before putting the rubber on the blade. It is great to know that now. I have watched you playing, and your experience and techniques are amazing . I've been playing for only 3 years. I don't have a coach, so I watch people playing, and I try to copy them, hahaha😂 that way I have improve some. Bye now, and have a blessed day.

Weighing out each rubber by the decimal point like that is the most German thing I've ever seen
@naywon64923 жыл бұрын
For thoese who dont understand why Timo weights his rubber before cutting and (Not after). Sponge is one of the lightest meterial on earth. Difference weight in decimal point decide Harder(denser) sponge or Softer sponge. For a normal human being, differences of 5g is not noticeable as a Whole racket weight. It doesnt matter at all. Denser Sponge = Greater speed, Softer sponge = Greater spin. The softer sponge bites(dwell) the ball more and create a lot of spin.
@rickross28383 жыл бұрын
@@naywon6492 hmm i think he also can't weigh them after cutting because by then they are already mounted onto the blade...
@0bzen223 жыл бұрын
It's not really the weight he is measuring, but density and how fast it's gonna be. Makes sense though. If you measure the lightest (slowest) combination (two rubbers plus wood), versus the heaviest, I'm sure a player of his calibre would be able to tell straight away. Seems like we need to do another German thing then. A blind test and measurements.

Table Tennis is one sport where even the top players personally handle the "stringing" of their equipment. One reason why we love this game. Given how fast and exciting the game is played and the interesting personalities (like Timo Boll) and contrasting playing style of the top players from all over the world, it deserves more following, bigger sponsors and higher prize money that what it gets now as compared to Tennis and Badminton. I still have my chinese „double fish“ racket from 1982, and few „Schilkröt“ olympic balls from the early 80’s. It was played a lot as a young amateur, but taken very much care of it. Surprisingly, it‘s in almost perfect condition, just the top rubber is loose for few mm on some places of the outside. Took care of the top rubber 4 times/year with castor oil (Rizinus Öl), let it set for one day, then got the surface clean and adhesive with alcohol. From time to time some dabs with regular honey, then again cleaning with alcohol. (in eastern Europe we had nothing else, and me no knowledge). But the grip is 38 years later 90% as new. I was a big fan of Dragutin Surbek. I like the style of Timo too! I had made a customized ergonomic grip out of 10mm plywood for my very small hands. This shorter but heavier grip moved the balance point towards the handle, for a very pleasant control feel. Had wound sewing tread on the last layer of laquer, then removed. Somehow the laquer is not hardening completely, still kind of sticky... Best grip I EVER felt on a racket. Think it‘s time for me, to try some modern materials... and get to play
