TWO POINTS: 1. Very few non-Buddhists know that Tina was a very highly spiritual practicing Buddhist, with a few videos of her singing Buddhist chants that can be found on KZbin that can be used as an aide to Buddhist meditation. 2. Her second song in this video reminds me of something that still makes me smile when I recall it. And that is, after performing with Tina, Cher said it was like dancing with a hurricane.

thank u so much for this info--Tina really is my soul sister-no wonder I have been drawn to her these last few years-I did not know she too was a practicing Buddhist-I have been invited to meet the Dali Lama THREE TIMES--and invited to dinners given in his honor-and was told by his next in line that I had been initiated into the Buddha realms long ago--which I DO recall. thankyou for sharing this point. Namaste!!!

Tina could front a soul, R&B, or Rock & Roll band as well as anyone. She was absolutely the embodiment of those genres when she was performing. She was around 42 at the time of this appearance on The Tonight Show. This was no "hanging on as long as possible, living off of the past" performance. This was an artist still at the height of her power and about to skyrocket even higher. She had more Rock and Roll cred, charisma, and dynamism than most of the "kids" in the business in 1982. Its still fucking phenomenal all these decades later.

Not really a good match I think I guess you could say that Tina came closest to that with her multiple duets with Tom Jones in the 70's but Tom had a stronger voice than Elvis and was quite a bit more dynamic in the late 70's than was Elvis. Also Elvis wasnt known for duets or wishing to share the stage with anyone else. Tina was always willing to serve to song first whatever that meant her contribution would be

It just occurred to me that all the best performers, those who had the natural instinct to work up an audience by sheer charisma, came out of the mid-to-late 1950s. Just show up and work it. No light shows. No pyrotechnics, no choreography, no constant costume changes-just let the music control every fiber of your being, collect that energy, and blow away the spectators.

I can't believe that, as a Tina fan, that I never listened to Rock and Roll Widow before. This instantly shot up to my top 5 Tina Turner songs. Fun fact: When she sang this on Carson, she hadn't even recorded it. It wouldn't appear on record until 1985's Private Dancer. Tina was still on her long hard climb back from the Ike years and the near-penniless years that followed. If I remember, she had either not been signed to a U.S recording contract at this point, or had just been signed, and she only got signed to Capitol after David Bowie (props to him) invited Captiol executives to come see one of Tina's concerts at that time, and they got to see the Tina experience up close.

There was no "racist hold of the industry" at that time. Tina had already proven herself as a successful entertainer and there were a ton of black entertainers already signed with numerous record labels. I'm sure the executives in the industry felt that her career had already peaked and her popularity was waning. They just wanted to move on to signing newer artists. That's hardly "racist" thinking...

Tina Turner was fascinating. We just saw the two sides of her in this performance. Anna Mae Bullock restrained southern girl who did not drink or smoke or curse. Then Tina Turner the ROCK & ROLL QUEEN risque bold and fire. Anna Mae put up with Ike Turner but Tina refused and fought back to break free. RIP QUEEN TINA ❤

Im 57. Tina Turner. Obviously a Great Voice.....ever since "Proud Mary" Ike and Tina.....but soon it was just Tina. From a boy with surplus hormones. She was.........Hot! Legs! Legs! Legs! In interviews she speaks very happy. A Positive Lady.....and always on Tour. A Diva. A Big Comeback for her was the......Mad Max beyond Thunderdome. She had several Hits. "We don't needs another Hero" and again with " "Whats love got to do with it" a recognized Voice.
