I recommend using cheap store bought oils to practice with. Olive oil and coconut oil are good ones.

Have you ever had a batch of soap not go to vasaline stage I made a batch of soap that was close to this and it did not go to vasaline stage it seemed like it did not have enough water in it??? My first batch I ever made was a few days ago came out good but not super hard , this one I'm asking about is my second and it was a hot process soap the recipe I used was 5 oz lye 6 oz water 20 oz coconut oil 10 oz olive oil And I put 2 oz of shae butter Thank you ,peter
@TinaMoenck7 жыл бұрын
Peter Paulaski That's a high amount of coconut oil. That tends to cook a lot differently. Not every recipe will go through all the hot process stages.

I had a recipe that I wanted to try and I put it in the calc. and i was gonna let you all see and if im doing this right from that chart that I wanted to use. Ok I have coconut oil, 76 deg. 3.2oz.,6.4 Olive Oil, 6.4 oz grapeseed OIl and the calculations that it gave me for lye-(NaOH-was 2.1 for the 6%) and water 4.5 oz for water. If I use this will it come out right by what the chart gave me? The oils weighted out to be 16 oz total. Just don't want to hurt myself or anyone in my house if I make this as I have it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance...

I use the Brambleberry lye calc and it's set to 33% water. I put your oils in with a 5% Superfat and got 2.18 ounces of lye and 5.3 ounces of water. I'd go with the higher water, it'll be easier to work with. The high amount of liquid oils will give you more time to work with it too.

question on these soap calculators they have the NaOH ration for the lye and then on the right side of this chart is a water amount that is in ounces Like say the NaOh is a 2.184 which there saying is 6% and then the water it gives 4.4ounces but in brackets it has beside that water ounce (2.2 to 6.6) now is this saying that that is only for the water amount you can use or is the first set of numbers for the water what you can use for lye and the second set in brackets up to the amount of water or like I was saying is this just for water. Im so confused on these soap calculators. If I could figure this out I could make some....lol
@TinaMoenck6 жыл бұрын
Water amounts can vary which can be confusing. Lye needs its own weight in water to dissolve correctly, but that's a very strong solution that will accelerate trace and isn't for beginners. Full water is 40% of the oil weight, and isn't recommended either, because the soap will take forever to cure. I only use 38% water for hp. I use 33% water for cp. To make it easy you can just do twice the water of the lye, like your example... If you need 2 ounces of lye use 4 ounces of water. I'll look at your recipe you posted after work and let you know.
@ghettocountry86786 жыл бұрын
@@TinaMoenck basically I was asking if those brackets were low to high water you can use for what the lye amount has but without numbers in brackets. Or lye amount 2.2 to water amount 6.6. or could that mean just water levels you can use from 2.2 to 6.6 in brackets.?
@ghettocountry86786 жыл бұрын
The calc using was a Google search that was just lye calc.
