The key is to negotiate with your adult kids as adults. That doesn't mean you don't treat them better than random strangers on the street. It just means you don't let them get away with anything that makes you angry at them. If you're constantly getting frustrated and and angry at your children for the part they play in your household then you suck at negotiating. You should feel like having them around makes the house a better place. If it doesn't, they're adults. They don't have to be around.

Maybe the exception to this would be if one is getting out of some abusive or exploitative situation and you need to be a rehab for 6 months or something. Maybe for a short time they'll not be able to contribute as much as they drain, but I still think that should be for a limited time. Part of becoming rehabilitated means they need to learn to contribute and make themselves valuable to the household.

Living at home past 20 is fine, being homeschooled is fine, ballet is fine, acting weird and "young" is fine.

Concerning the lonely part.... The parents gave a interview after the show aired and said Rachel usually has lots of friends over but since they are minors and if the show taped them all of their parents would have to be under contract with the show. Plus those parents wouldn't have control over how the show edited those kids. So I can fully understand that.

My parents raised me to clean up after myself from an early age. At eight I was taking turns doing the dishes with my other siblings who were older because I was about tall enough to. I cleaned the bathroom every weekend and folded laundry, I was awarded an hour of game time (sometimes more). At 12 I started doing my own laundry and we all did chores around the house. Despite not being in the best position to do so I moved out at 18. Those three kids are spoiled brats who treat their mother in a way that we wouldn't treat mine (save for the couple who were a bit rude to her when they became teenagers). I would stay up every night my mum worked to make sure her bed was set and even readied the coffee pot for her, so she could easily have coffee in the morning. I didn't have an easy childhood but I was wise enough to see that my mum deserved and needed help, especially with how distant my father was with her.

this episode has my favorite ending on the entire show. reality tv has never been the most subtle genre, so that quiet moment at the very end with Steve walking to the kitchen and doing the dishes, right after Doreen comments that she doesn't think her family is going to change, is so uplifting despite how small it is.

It makes me sad/angry that the daughters got mad with how the money was accoladed. Their mom works her ass off around the house so she of all people in that home deserves what she wants (it was so sweet seeing her get the money for her new kitchen). And btw, the government doesn’t totally pay for your school, it’s called student loans and you’d have to pay it off anyway.
@ZIbroweed2 жыл бұрын
If it had been one kid, that would be a different matter but if all three kids ended up the exact same kind of lazy, that's how they were raised. The mom and the dad share responsibility for that. The mom was a hardcore enabler and the dad appeared to be checked out at home (though both may have been played up by the producers there's probably some truth to both characterizations). The kids were absolutely horrible, but their parents raised them that way. They taught them that refusing to do things means that those things get done by someone else. That's a cruel thing to teach your kids because the real world will be a harsh re-educator, and who knows how much debt they'll be in when they finally learn how the world works if they ever do.
