I love the Rufous too! They're amazing and definitely easy to distinguish from others. We have plenty of them, Douglas County, CO.

Very interesting. In Southern California we have Allen's hummingbirds who are very closely related to rufous hummingbirds. Some small differences, like adult male Allen's usually having a mostly green back, and slightly different tail feathers. Some Allen's migrate but we have a subspecies in SoCal who stays all year, S. sasin sedentarius. It's nice to have them and Anna's all year. I think I have seen occasional probably-Rufous hummers stopping by, likely on migration. The rufous and Allen's are both very aggressive to each other!
