The postpartum hormone changes can feel like a rollercoaster of highs and lows. Given how much these hormonal changes are linked to postpartum mood disorders in particular, it's a wonder why there's very little information (if any) given to mothers on how to support our postpartum hormones before having our babies. So let's talk about it!
In this video we chat about:
- Some of the key hormone changes happening from straight after the birth of your baby, and how they can continue to fluctuate for many months (even years after)
- What can impact your hormones rebalancing postpartum
- And some simple but highly effective tips to support your hormones postpartum and in the years that follow.
Remember that there are so many amazing and significant changes going on after pregnancy and it can take time for your hormones and your stress response system to regulate. For more helpful tips for postpartum recovery and avoiding postnatal depletion, see my channel.

Thank you so much!! My baby is 13 months and sometimes I find myself super stressed or having mood swings😭 I needed this video. I can see now how lack of sleep and not having the right nutrition can be affecting my hormones. Thank you for the information 💗

Thank you for sharing this. So helpful. I'm 3 months postpartum and having sleep issues due to anxiety. Definitely hard to deal with as I consider myself a very active and healthy person. Nothing can truly prepare you for motherhood, but these things, if in place will definitely help l. Also reminding yourself it's all going to pass very quickly in the grand scheme of things. We are warriors, and we have been able to raise and feed our babies in times of famine, war, etc. We can do this!

Now is still a great time to start! Focus on adding in as much good, healthy food as possible and taking the time to regulate your nervous system too. I'd love to hear how you go! Michala x

Yes where there’s deficiencies. These are 3 of the most common deficiencies I see with new Mums. Mag and b vitamins are very helpful for stress but also lots of minerals needed for stress support.

Postpartum depression/anxiety for about 3 months after my now 5 year old was born. Im scared because I have twins due in about a month. Any big advice for me? Ty

Congratulations! My best advice would be to Plan for postpartum. How you are going to regulate your nervous system so it feels calm and safe, how you are going to support yourself nutritionally. Adding in extra supplements that support the hormonal change (I have an online postpartum class that shows you exactly how to do this!) Ask for help before you have the bubbas. I’m so excited for you, You’ve got this Mama. Feel free to email me if you need ❤️ Michala

What about those women who suffer malasma or pregnancy mask that didn't leave their face 5years after the baby was born?

Can be related to hormone imbalance, copper imbalance or adrenal dysfunction. Best to work with a naturopath to get to the root cause.

If the baby needs to be fed every three hours, how can sleep be prioritized? At most, my wife can get a max of 2.5 to 3 hours at a time. We're working on the ide strategy if she can get 3 x 2.5 hours sleep per 24 hour period, then she's doing well.

That's great that you've got a plan in place (and you're supporting her). I have a 6 week old at the moment too so I understand it can feel hard to prioritise sleep. What I find works best is going to bed as early as possible. Resting during the day whenever possible (even if she can't sleep - resting is the next best thing). As baby get's older and feeds stretch out, your wife will be able to hopefully get some 4-5 hour blocks of sleep which help with feeling more refreshed.

@themamaway thanks! Another question: I've heard that as the baby grows and can eat more in one feed and then sleep longer, it becomes better to feed regularly during the day and then try to get longer sleeps at night. My question is, how do the breasts cope with going 4-5 hours without giving a feed when they're used to giving a feed every 2-3 three hours?

I'm so sorry to hear that, you must be exhausted. I'd encourage you to see a Naturopath as there is a lot we can do for insomnia. Also you might find my Postpartum Anxiety helpful as what I talk about there also applies to pp insomnia (which is common with ppa) x Michala

I'm struggling with acne and weight gain but I'm 21 months postpartum. I'm still breastfeeding, so I'm guessing it's due to low estrogen? how can I raise my estrogen (and maybe progesterone too) without affecting prolactin? my cortisol and nutrients levels are great, so I don't know what to do 😩

Breastfeeding does seem to affect hormones and weight differently for everyone. How often are you still feeding throughout the day /night? There are other hormones at play including thyroid which can commonly affect Mums a year or 2 after pregnancy and contribute to weight gain. Do you feel good besides the weight and skin issues? - Michala

@@themamaway oh thank you for replying! yes everything else is great. I've had subclinical hypothyroid issues in the past but my levels are all good now, so I don't think it is that

@@hllymchll Well it’s great that you’re feeling good otherwise! I’d be looking at possible food intolerances and your nutrition side of things. I do have a video on stubborn post pregnancy weight you might find helpful - I actually struggled a lot with my weight before having kids but making the changes I talk about in the video, I haven’t had a problem since. Might be a similar situation for you? This is the video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXmkeZivprZqoq8 g
