Learning to texture in "blobs" was probably the biggest leap forward in my building skills thus far. Still got a lot to learn but that's a really huge evolution.

I tend to like noise a lot when it’s a nice subtle variation in color and texture, but it really needs to be combined with larger patches and blobs to give the whole effect some form and definition, otherwise the noise you try to add will look just as flat as if you didn’t add any noise at all.

For the gravel beach, you could convert it into an old and now ruinous keep, as though the same waterway was once protected by another people. Maybe its now sunken into the water and overgrown with a grove.

I really appreciate your explanation about noise and patches. I’ve struggled with the “randomized” texturing strategy that most people suggest. My brain just doesn’t like it…how it looks or the process of doing it. What you explained with the granite as intentionally distressing based on the pipe made perfect sense to me and I can’t wait to try it on my next build.

I think of noise and blobs a lot like drawing in shadows and details. In the same way that every pixel in a 16x16 texture is creating a visual effect of form and texture, adding block sized noise and patches is like sketching in a much broader level of detail, which you can see best when you take a step back and look at a distance.

For the gravel stone beach maybe you could make a little British flower garden thing complete with gazebo. So all the village and mudbrick castle people could go there for picnics when the weather was nice.

I had three distinct suggestions that may fuel ideas for the gravel stone beach: - A shipwright, building or maintaining the transport ships that come up the river. - A training ground for the defenders of the castle. Long open spaces for archery practice. Maybe even places to drill for aquatic combat/rescue. - A religious site. A ritual circle, or alter, or temple to Skulk or something. If it's a large enough area, using multiple of these options together as the kind of "support buildings" that keep the Castle running, but with easy access for the residents to flee to the Keep in case of emergency.

Old (very) ruined castle for the stony shore, like the remenant of the older settlers, that might also give an excuse for an eventual nordic village.

Kind of riffing off of someone else’s idea, but you could build a library by the castle where you could store all of the comments of the day. Idk if you already have a sugarcane farm but you could even put one under the library and have a cow pasture nearby !

What can be considered too much or too little in terms of building and texturing is totally subjective. I watch so many different minecraft youtubers, all with their own style. Waxfraud, for example, definitely has a style that would be "too much" for me. I really enjoy watching his videos though, cause he's so creative with all his little details. He has some really cool ideas on how to build and detail those builds. I especially like watching you, Fwhip, because i feel like your style is the perfect balance for my taste. I take a lot of inspiration from you and have learned a lot. Building and learning to detail has been so fun to experience.

Something ive heard bdubs and scar talk about that i also was doing is think about how build would exist in reality. If its a house with stone brick in the pallet where would rain water run off and collect that you might add mossy blocks and some cobble to indicate the weather wearing the bricks over time. If its a path through several buildings where would the foot traffic be what side of the path would likely be more used more worn down. Also on a build meant to look older are there places where repairs have been done that could introduce a complimentary block. I feel like this perspective really helps when the blobs dont look right. Sometimes it helps to give the blobs meaning or purpose

Idea for a new build: there is lots of Forrests around however there is no loging companys harvesting trees and selling them to customers. So in the dead space you mentioned at the beginning of the video maybe you could build some sort of logging company.

Opposite the mud brick castle, you could add a ruined village. Hear me out... you have ruins on the road to the desert, but not so much anywhere else. Also, with the ruined, it could be cut off by a broken bridge, and that is why the village died. Anyway, thanks for answering my previous comment!

0:46 A partially flooded forest? As if part of the river had burst its banks? A river bursting its banks isn't a negative thing, it's a natural part of a river and many forms of wildlife rely on semi-frequent flooding

Idk how much it would fit in with the area but maybe you could put a riverside fairground/circus where the stone beach is! I think a big ferris wheel or circus tent at the end of the waterway could look cool there and bring a lot of life into the area! If not that maybe a giant statue to impose the might and wealth of the kingdom!

Also it could be a cool idea to build a zoo with all the mobs in the game somewhere in the world! You could theme it after victorian era zoos to make it fit in more with everything else too! Or maybe you could theme it like the Omaha zoo and build a bunch of glass domes with micro biomes! It'd be a pain to round all the mobs up but I think finding them all and building a bunch of small habitats for them could change things up and challenge you in ways you haven't really been before along with giving you a lot of new stuff to do!

noise can definitely look good but you need 2 blocks with very similar textures, but it rlly only looks good on smaller scales
@ShadoUrufu666
@ShadoUrufu666 5 ай бұрын
I will say as a casual builder myself, sometimes, less or no details is better. You can build something impressive just by changing resource packs, or the scale. Of course, don't always use the same blocks [looking at you, cobblestone castles] but have a theme, have a pattern that similar builds follow. You don't need to, but it's better than building randomly and having to re-do the work 10 times. Oh, and after making many roofs and wall combos, be mindful of color pallets. EDIT: As a general idea, I usually build in 5x5 squares. Pillars on all corners, foundation block, and then 2-3 block high of a different block for the wall. This means I can scale up a build easily when I have to do a lot of walls. I can also do 7x7, but this is generally because I like 1 wide doorways, and 3 wide paths. Paths that usually have a square shape to them, because to me, the squareness is part of the game.

Noise maps in building reminds me of negative and positive space in art, its basically the same concept. Detail is cool but if you don't have "empty" or "plain" spaces, the overdetailing doesn't let the eye rest and doesn't give the viewer a place to focus on. But again art/building is subjective and can depend on style :) so mess around people!
