Hurricane or tornado. ? I saw a home built with a metal strap draped along the roof boards, down the corners and anchored into the ground. Finally, a guy draped 6 long truck trailer straps over his house roof to concrete posts buried in his ground. When a storm is forecasted he clamps the straps in an hour.

Filling the notch with wood restores some of the strength, given it would be compressive
@HueMongus1012 күн бұрын
@toby7982 The forces applied where there is no support under the horizontal beam causes the horizontal beam to flex vertically on the weakest point (the notch). The beam under the notched 4x4 becomes a fulcrum and further increases the stress at the notched point by applying a pulling force at the weak point (the notch). It also has to do with how wood fibers are structured. The way to attach the vertical post and the horizontal beam is to drill or nail without notching. This makes all the force that can be applied to the horizontal beam vertical. Plus it makes the structure faster to build. If you are building like this video and notching your support structures, it can bring down floors, ceilings, and whole buildings.

I had a neighbor that was building a fence. For some reason he thought it was best to notch the 4x4 posts so the 2x4 stringers would be flush. I told him he was making a big mistake. That he was turning the 4x4s into 2x4 and worse he was making a stress concentrator. The first time a big wind came his fence was on the ground.
@abeeftec23 сағат бұрын
But a 2x4 fence wouldn't fall from wind unless it was hurricane force winds. Something wrong with this story. If they were secured properly it would make no difference for wind unless a hurricane and then it taking the 4x4s possibly as well.
@makerspace53323 сағат бұрын
@@abeeftec If you take a 4x4 and cut a 2x4 notch out of it, it will be substantially weaker than even a normal 2x4. This is because the notch concentrates the stress in that area.
@2010utube10022 сағат бұрын
