​@@thecumminscamper With two impact-g*ns, you could be tempted to carry two spares. . Some of us [humbly points to self] carry two spares on each vehicle. . . A couple decades ago, I fabricated an Expedition Trailer from a 12'/4m service-body off a yuge tandem-axle utility company truck. That style body has numerous compartments along each side. . The trailer axles I mounted were 10k with electric brakes. Its four tires and wheels matched the Dodge 4x4 pick-up. I carried two spares on the Dodge, plus two matching spares on the trailer. . This subject is important to me. . An aside: I never had a flat, but my spares helped other folks. . An aside: I also carry extra fuel. I never run out, but it helped other folks get to going.

Saw this type of valve stem on a show car many years ago. You would have to remove the cap and screw on your valve stem when it is needed then remove when finished airing up. The valve stem would be carried in the glove box when needed. Great video and glad you guy's are safe!!

I'm glad you posted this video. I watch a lot of videos on super single trucks because I'm really interested in getting one. So many people with these setups don't even carry a spare tire, so its good to see that you had one. Many guys that are older than you would really struggle to change the tire because those 41s are so heavy and awkward.

It’s called a “flush mount valve system”. Apparently it’s for off-roading and preventing your valve stem from getting hung up and ripped out on a root or rock. Weird set up but I can see how it solves a problem in other applications besides mine 😂 Thanks for watching and commenting!

Experience is the greatest teacher. We had to set the camper back so the spare just barely makes it out. A compact extendable ladder used as a ramp makes it roll out and back in easy even with two old people like us. How do we know? Two blowouts and a flat over the past five years. Our first time was just as hard as yours. Great video so others will know the issues, especially the necessity of carrying two jacks.

Folks over at buckstop say they think those Goodyear tires are a nightmare to balance and I’m gonna go with their new type they have on their website. Tall and skinny for the win! We did another set of the Goodyears. Bought them from Stazworks and those guys will true the tire and balance it before shipping. I’ve now got about 3000 miles on the tires and they’re awesome. 75mph, no wobbles, no bobbles. Smooth as you could ask for. You’ll notice a huge difference in how the gearing feels once you go to singles. I wish someone made 5:88 gears for the 5500s so I could get some RPMs back

04:57 I *NEVER* turn my back to traffic. Just superstitious, I suppose. . Part of our vehicle equipment is reflective neon lime-orange vests. If alone, I can hang one off the outside mirror to flap with each passing traffic blast. . Truckers carry weighted reflective triangles. A series of those are set near the white line, a few dozen yards/meters(metres) behind the disabled rig. . Of course, that presumes traffic would miss seeing forty ton... ... but notice a 16"/.5m plastic gizmo setting on the pavement. . . In rain, would burning flares help with life-extension? . A flare story: East of Cottage Grove, Oregon, I was cresting a gentle rise. Suddenly, a LawEnforcementOfficial was in the two-lane, waving frantically. . Apparently, he was warning of a wreck ahead. After I saw him, I saw his flashing electronic LED flares, tiny discs along the white line. . The LawEnforcementOfficial placed them, true, but they were hidden behind the top of the rise. . I try to learn something every day. That taught me... ...safety equipment must be visible to be effective.

It’s actually a recessed valve stem so that you don’t hypothetically hook your valve stem on something when off-roading. I bought an adapter to now be able to add air pressure. I’ve never seen those before. Super weird but makes sense for niche applications.

Airflow and if the spare tire holder fails that would cause a ton of destruction. I’ve had my spare from the 3500 on the front and I was always worried about the idea of running it over one day on the wrong bump.

🔴🔴🔴yeah ! same thing happen to me 3 days ago , same frikin tires , this is my second set . 1st set 30k miles no blow out but where really bad out of round . this second set , i learned how to rotate for my set up , much better. But now , 40 k miles ... this blowout , gonna do conti's ... how bout you ?? BTW , i have never seen a pirelli in the states ?? unless bought from a military surplus broker , tires are usually 10+ yrs old .. safe travels ~peace~🔴🔴🔴

How do you go about rotating your tires now that helped you extend the miles on the tires? Not rotating them at set intervals or in a certain manner I think contributed to the bubble my tire developed. I’m going to do another set of Goodyears. The Contis require more rotating than the Goodyears, are known to have a shorter life span the Goodyears in my research and lastly I really like the wide look of the Goodyears over the Contis. I don’t love this Pirelli spare. I’d like to take one of my current Goodyears, make that my spare and then keep this Pirelli without a rim somewhere else for the sake of having two spares. @@thecumminscamper my wheel tire & truck set-up is a bit different , spare is mounted on the rear. wheels are hutchinson bead lock . i rotated this 2nd set every 5k miles. when i do this i criss cross , b'cause the rear wheel gets turned outside in , this provides a perfect track with no spacers. In doing so , the forward moving tread wear stays the same , ie minimizing the shake , cause these GY tires ARE NOT ROUND. You & I are not the 1st with the side wall blow out , it seems to be a theme. Hope this helps ~peace~ PS: the only other option is Mich , lower speed rating , conti's seem more available in Canada & Mexico . I just gotta try something dif. ( me 4yr F/T)

​@@thecumminscamper We carry two 22.5 spares on the poop deck of the gooseneck toy-hauler. Those fit our ExpeditionVehicle with its 29,000# GVWR. . We lift them using the porch roof on the rear of our ExpeditionVehicle. Rat-shit straps and a come-along. Taint pretty, but like anything else we do, it impresses the straights.

What a pain in the A** I'm "one of those guys" who travel w/o a spare on my rig. I opted for boat gas vs spare in-between headache rack and camper....This video really got the wheels turning (no point intended) I just did replace my G275 for the same (G275) tire. I'm curious. Did you have a bubble on the top side of your sidewall that landed you all on the side of the road? I replaced the one defect tire and 2k miles later I had to replace all 4 due to "wearing" issues. Side note, I found you for you from the "How to mount a truck camper" video. Great stuff! Im 3 years in and am just now tackling this project. I have a ton of questions about your setup. Ive seen you guys out there. We live in CO. Dont be suprised if some dude with a grey 550 (white mammoth ) starts asking a bunch of questions.

Thanks for watching the video! The bubble was on the sidewall of the tire. Did you buy your tires for Stazworks? They’re the only place I know that sells the g275s and will also true them to be round so they hopefully wear evenly. That’s rad that the how to mount a TC to a flatbed video brought you to our channel. It’s still kinda surreal that people even watch our videos. I’m looking forward to meeting ya on the road. @@thecumminscamper bro…. same on the sidewall. I replaced the one but a trip to mammoth and back made the other three wear like my truck was all wheel drive or something. Each individual tread was .5” lower from front to back…. Like 1/2 of a pyramid. We replaced all four a month ago. EOG out of Denver built our truck and they take exceptionally good care of their family… especially when incidentals like this happen. Even at cost, these things are pricey. They also true them on site which is some A+ shiiiz. Shoutout to Elevation! I’ll keep a lookout for you two. ~Gas instead of spare tire guy

06:35 With two vehicles in that situation, I would angle the trailing vehicle so the entire driver-side is visible to traffic. . Why? Occasionally, a vehicle operator fixates on the rear of the vehicle ahead, following blindly. Any distraction, and that operator could simply drive right into the rear of the parked stationary vehicle, leading to unpleasantness. . I would also park the trailing vehicle back quite a ways. If it is crashed into from behind, that gives me a crumple-n-drag zone, and hopefully, enough time to gracefully step aside.

I’ve learned it’s a specialty recessed valve stem. It requires an adaptor to be accessible for an air hose. The design is so you remove the risk of ripping your valve stem off the tire.

I didn’t feel the truck/camper drop when it happened and the truck stayed in total control. The sound of the tire blowing was the most scary part of the whole scenario. I thought an intercooler boot popped off and then when I got out of the truck I saw the mangled tire. If this had been a steer tire, I think the panic level would have been higher but at no point did it feel like the camper was going to tip over. Overall, very happy with how it felt during the incident. Thanks for the question and for watching

​@@thecumminscamper We built our ExpeditionVehicle on a 1996 Ford CF8000 commercial truck, a cab-over. . 2004 or so. Middle of the night, middle of noplace Arizona, a turbo clamp blew. Sounded like a grenade going off under our feet. . After verifying, we traveled to the next village. A plumbing shop had the correct size clamp, but we had to buy the apparatus it was on, a grand total of us$3 (three fedbux). . We took the clamp, left the device on the counter with the slightly bemused kosher. . At the next city, we acquired the proper Cummins replacement. Still carry it as a spare in case the plumbing clamp goes.

​@@thecumminscamper We have a 5500 on the farm. Lug torque is in the neighborhood of 130ft-#. . Although it is over a decade old, we got a recall. Too much torque snaps the lugs... ... leading to my wheels passing me on the road. Probably a bad idea.

​@@thecumminscamper On our semi-truck 22.5 duals in the rear and 24.5 up front, they are never balanced by the shop. . Besides, our gravel forest-roads 'chunk' the daylights out of them. Significant sections of tread come up missing all the time. . For following traffic, our mud-flaps are their friends.
