Additionally, I find it helpful to examine what I get distracted by and why. Pretty often, I get distracted by a different task I'm really stressed by OR I get distracted to avoid a stressful task. Allowing myself a moment to ask myself why I'm stressed about the task and gently easing that stress as much as I can before working, gives me the clarity to do the task I want to stress-free. Training is part of it, but remember to be gentle!

@@honeyandlavender_ You're right. The first 2 weeks it was really hard for me to not check my social media thinking that someone texted me but now I don't really care because I found time to reply during the breaks. You can tell your friends that your notifications are off so they won't be mad at you if you replied late. I did it and my friends accepted it and some of them tried to turn off their notifications! I honestly just turn off all my notifications. XD But seriously, I tend to work most intensely in the morning and night. My body is the least energetic in the late afternoon. So I just embrace that. I commit mornings and early afternoons to deep work. I use the late afternoon to nap or watch youtube videos. I return to deep work at night until bedtime (or to watch a movie if I need a little more soothing.) You probably hear this a million times, Ro, but your videos always help people EXACTLY when they need to.

Omg you have helped me realise why I've been feeling so demotivated recently. I'm currently doing an online masters degree and I've been treating it like shallow work, when really I should be approaching it as deep work. I've been trying so hard to get through the material quickly, when really I should be slowing down and actually ~uuuuusing my braiiin~ to take it in.

I'm a 29 year old ADHD kid and felt immediately like this video was made for someone like me, but when I got to the deep work part it reminded me too much about hyperfocus and how we adhders suffers from not being able to choose when we hyperfocus. It is near impossible to regulate our focus. I hope the "work smarter, not harder" thing is something that people with ADHD can benefit from as well, and that the rest of this video doesn't make me feel disheartened that I actually can't control my focusing abilities.
@janecherrytree
@janecherrytree 2 жыл бұрын
I can see how this video can feel ableist when you hear her talking about doing exactly the things someone with ADHD struggles with. However, there's some things that can really help someone with ADHD to maybe direct their focus in a more controlled manner, like setting up cues to get into the mode, setting up cues to signal "work time is over now", figuring out under which circumstances it is easiest to focus (like with or without music, in your room or in the library etc), and setting a specific time frame to work so that it doesn't feel like you're about to work FOREVERRRR. I know it is definitely harder for someone with ADHD to implement these things, but I think they are definitely applicable to you as well. I hope you do not feel disheartened and I hope you are valuable beyond your capability to work and produce!
@marthelea

@@janecherrytree thank you so much for this considerate answer ❤️ I did feel like there were some things I could benefit from after watching the entire video and the tips you mention are really good ones 😊 I genuinely hope more ADHD brains get to read your answer 🧠

Rowena, lemme tell you something. I was a mess when I was a teenager. And that was mostly because my parents didn't teache me that routines are really important for a human's good functioning through life. Add that to my avoider personality and i was all the time stressed. Two years into into college, I burnt out so bad I knew there had to be another way. unfortunately, the path to discipline at 20 HURTS. But it is worth it. I found you and then I began my journey. Two years later and I am functioning 60% better from who I was. And when I look ahead and see the amount I still gotta go I don't get scared or impatient anymore because during the way I learned that process is to be cherished. Thank you so much for putting out videos like you do. Being so real with all things productivity helped me a lot in my own journey

Omg, I'm only 4 minutes into this video and my mind is blown. I've just realized WHY I've not been able to get to any deep work for the longest time. My brain just don't want to... it's because everything that you listed as shallow work is literally what I do all day at work. That's my job. There is no deep work in the position I'm in right now and I've been here for 1 year. Slowly dying inside. I miss digging into something. I've recently decided to go back to school again. Felt so excited about the change but now I really know I have to if I don't wantto get stuck in shallow mode. Thank you for this realization.
