Agreed. That opening went from Zero to Tarantino real fast. Just think of the many other kids around the world playing without a care who weren't swept away to safety at the last minute. That type of darkness in an animated film still is beyond American studios' abilities to market properly.

It probably wasn't helped by the fact that the other movie Don Bluth released for 20th Century Fox's short lived animation division was Anastasia, which really was full on Disney fare and indeed, Bluth was most known for lighthearted children's musicals. Had this movie been made by a Japanese studio, I don't think it would have had the same problems with the marketing and people would have had more adult expectations

I recommend you also take a look at the oft forgotten CG animated film, Battle for Terra. That was another science fiction film with the attention to detail and thematic depth that would appeal to an adult viewer but was... not marketed at all because it didn't appeal to children. It's been forever since I watched it, but I remember really enjoying at a time when the big sci-fi hit of the time was Avatar, a film thoroughly devoid of creativity in its story.

I really enjoyed this film. When it came out I was 30, older than the kid audience American marketing had targeted but as a long time Sci Fi and Anime fan I thought I saw something promising when I saw this coming. I grabbed it on VHS as soon as I could and really enjoyed it. The opening sequence with the destruction of Earth always grabbed me. It is emotional and tense. You go from this idealistic scene of a boy playing along a stream to learning the planet is moments from death. The universe at large you see with the salvage operation in the next scene is great world building and tells me everything I need to know of where this character fits in. You are correct, this truly is a hidden gem.

I will have to watch it again. I only saw it once years ago and while I absolutely LOVE the idea of animated sci fi I remember being a bit underwhelmed by it. Mostly the characters, if I remember correctly, and being put off by how pervy the one alien seemed. I remember the story being pretty interesting but wishing we got to see more sci fi environments than the kind of grey, dark, interior and exterior of ships. Though I did remember LOVING the bird/bat people and how sinister they looked and they ended up being good guys. But perhaps my memory fails me and there were things I missed about it, being so young when I watched it. I will have to give it another shot after such a glowing review.

I first learned of the movie when I saw a trailer for it on a playstation 1 demo disc. (which I've since copied to my youtube page). While the movie may have flopped I did still come across a few 'Planet Bob' references in later years. Extremely nitpicky but they don't know what the Titan does until they've tracked it down, it irked me that this description implies they were tracking it down because they already knew.

I've known of prejudice of hand drawn animation at that time, some people even say it out loud, that they can't watch anime and western animation, which I don't get. Then everything is made out of the same material, so to speak, it should be wearder to watch something like Avatar, where they could have animated the five or so humans in it to match the rest of the world to make everything more believeable as a whole, but that's not the usual viewers opinion, they loooove their humans, even in galaxies far, far away humans just have to be there...
