I think her alt mode works all right as a speedboat, and even the chunks of arm kibble aren't out of place for what was even in the comics an endearingly blocky, squarish character design compared to most round or pointy fembots. It's no wonder they picked such a mechanically minded mold for her (sans her trusty wrench). Now I just wish there was a way to get her by herself, what a cryin' shame. Oh well.

Nautica's alt mode in the IDW comics just didn't match her robot mode - I mean, her alt literally looks like the Titan's Return Astrotrain, which is bulky as heck, while her robot mode in IDW takes a lot of nods from Prime Arcee (mainly the torso shape) and Cybertron Thunderblast (the colour choices and her head). Also the position of her kibble in the comic lends itself only to the Blurr mould, so this figure still fits.

My biggest fear about IDW's current run ending is that once the series stops, there goes any chance of getting more figures of all these amazing new characters. 3P companies are barely managing to push out the DJD and they died off already, I really hope we get some awesome 3P to dedicate themselves to the series like Planet X has done for WfC/FoC

I am genuinely jealous that you own this figure. I really wish that it had an individual release just to make it more accessible. By putting it in the box set, it almost feels like Hasbro were banking on the comic fans wanting it for Nautica just to sell a bunch of repaints. Now, the figure is just so hard to find individually and when you do find it, it isn't cheap.

Oh yes the whole backpack former. Almost every fembot are backformers. More should have their alt modes transform into their bodies not hide behind. Cyberverse Shadow Striker is a prefect example of a transformer who looks like a girl with being a back or shellformer.

Frodos Huna There are good reasons why those 'manchildren' you speak of has issues with IDW and one of them being how fembots feels quite forced into the continuity because gender politics suddenly became a 'real' issue for the franchise. I like having more fembots in TF but I think IDW is being rather hamfisted about it like James Roberts' Lost Light mouthpie-- I mean book.

The only thing that miffed me about the Velocitron box is that because it does didn’t sell well, we never got the Archforce G2 repaint of TR Megatron in the West. He was supposed to come in a box with Arcee and Grotusque. Oh well, guess I’ll have to pay that awful import tax for the Takara version...

The fact that there's a G2 colored Megatron in Japan based on the Blitzwing mold, a die cast metal Ultra Magnus Titan Master, another repaint of TR Six Shot that also never left Japan, and the fact that Arcee and Grotusque were still TRU exclusives that were ironically even harder to get a hold of than Nautica was for a lot of people screams "botched 3rd Titans exclusive box". Between that and the fact that TRU went bankrupt before the box could got the green light pretty sums up the whole story.

I picked up the Titans Return Arcee version of this mold. Personally I think this mold works better for the lady bots. I wasn't all that thrilled with Titans Return as a concept and thought the line was poorly executed over all. It was nice to get updates for all of the G1 headmasters, but I would have rather had the headmaster juniors than the headmaster versions of all of the decidedly non-headmaster characters. Headmaster Arcee was one I couldn't pass up though. That nod to season four was too good.

And I wanted to like them, I love weird monster things in Transformers! Maybe I’m just a sucker for cockpits, maybe I just like the Monsterbots as characters way more than the Terrorcons, but I know what I like, and it’s not Terrorcons and Dinobots... ...and who seriously thought they could get away with Voyagers, with the shit stickers, with cubes that no one wanted, and no actual weapons?

Nautioca looks awesome! There's also a completely gobsmackingly good Arcee based on the same Blurr mold. It's based more on the (superior) IDW Arcee than on the classic "Hot Rod's girlfriend" variant, and I absolutely love it.

I prefer "murder" as a character trait to "Hot Rod's girlfriend", but YMMV. And yeah, the original backstory was crap; a lot of the stuff made around that time was. Luckily IDW seems to have gotten on board the "not being pricks" train quite nicely when it comes to female characters, gender, romance etc. I still think IDW Arcee had a lot more interesting story arc:y type stuff happen, and a more interesting character overall, than the old fembod nonsense. Though Prime Arcee is, of course, better than both G1 and IDW. (I hadn't read the part about her being Galvatron's brother. I'm a bit behind, as I pretty much only read the big-ass collected volumes)

As far as versions of Arcee go, I'll just stick with the one from Prime honestly, having more than one character trait and not having that terrible design G1 Arcee has is somehow an impressively high bar to clear for the character.... also not being Galvatron's secret brother who's apparently better in a fight than the guy who *killed a friggin prime*... good god, the more stuff they piled onto that character, the worse it got.

Third party companies does a way better job on the transformers figures to make sure that they are similar or exactly the same from the comic book counter parts. Also, IDW has been working on the Sonic comic books, although I still angry that IDW did not want work on the Mega Man comics.

I love it when the Fembots aren't tedious shellformers. Torchbearers have a lot of problems mold-wise and character-wise (surely more could be done with Pyra Magna just being an asshole and the rest being her posse, but these are combiners, most teams lack characterization) but reusing the molds they did made them look really nice and distinctive. Pyra Magna has a great broad shouldered design. Nautica was definitely hit and miss, but I am glad they made her. Now give me my leader class Strika. I can't afford MMC's.

Oddly enough, I think the classic Nissan Fairlady Z transformer-body, like Prowl or Bluestreak, could be a compromise between a capable transformer design and the need to put an obvious pair of big headlights on a fembot. For real though, I like this figure. Something about the big fans on the shoulders really make Nautica stand out.
