Have you ever considered trying the 'talking buttons' they use for dogs with the raccoons? Supposedly racs are smarter than dogs, and I'd bet they would have a lot to say.

My parents used to take in orphaned raccoons. They were so precious and such a huge handful! ALL of them, but especially these 2 I'm going to tell y'all about. 😂 My parents had purchased a very nice (and expensive) king-size mattress. At this time they had 2 brothers that had been orphaned. Yep, you guessed it, they made a hole under the bed up into the new mattress and this is where they decided they were going to sleep. They also somehow made a hole in the wall of one of the back rooms. They were crawling around in the wall until one brother got stuck. Talk about screaming! BOTH of them...one because he was stuck, the other because his brother was stuck. What a mess to get them out and THEN to repair the wall. Dad used to buy their favorite foods and kept them in one of the crisper drawers in the bottom of the fridge. When it was time for a treat, he'd open the fridge and they would pull out the crisper drawer and choose their treat. Oh my, but they were soooo precious! It was wonderful living with them. And it was a HUGE relief, but much more of a great sadness, when it was time to release them. No, they weren't just tossed out to fend for themselves. My dad built them a little tree house and they came & went for a while. Then one day they didn't come back, which is as it should be. But oh MAN, they were so missed. Their very 1st raccoon was Lollypop. She was like a daughter to them. She was so tiny when she 1st came to stay and she became so attached to my parents, especially my dad. Anyway, after she was released, she would come back all the time to visit and take naps with my dad. Then later, every year, she'd bring her babies to introduce them. Mom & dad would put food down for her & her crew. My dad would get down beside her and talk with her. One time, I'll never forget this, he told her "I love you." Lollypop stopped eating, leaned over, and kissed him on the nose. For years after this, she would visit with her new family. My dad's gone now & my mom just can't do the rehab any longer. But we still feed them every evening. And keep fresh water for them as well. We recently had a momma and her 4 babies living in a hole in one of our oak trees. It was great watching them.

I have the best of both worlds, a friendly, wild raccoon that comes around my 2nd floor back deck now and again. I think someone else socialized her, she's very, very well behaved. I held my hand out for her to sniff once and she gently took my finger in her little paw and gave a perfectly polite 'how do you do' handshake. So I got some dog food for when she drops by. I named her Carl, then found out she's a girl. But I still call her Carl, because she doesn't speak English so it doesn't matter.

I'm supporting an entire ecosystem of birds and critters, and like yourself, I got a raccoon in the mix. Worst part is also got rats, but the rats are nocturnal, and whattaya know, then I got owls. They do a great job on the rats. Then this spring a bobcat came wandering through. At this rate, soon I'll be riding an elk around my yard chasing grizzly bears..

you know the squirrel and raccoon was taken bc it was being horrifically exploited, right? by someone who ignored the many times he was told to bring them to a rescue facility, until it was too late. if you have the licensing and properly care for wild animals you decide to keep as a pet, they will not be taken, and will likely not be euthanized because of health issues YOU cause... like peanut the squirrel.

I had a pet raccoon for two years as a child while living in Ohio. My Dad read an article in the local newspaper saying that someone living nearby had found a litter of abandoned baby raccoons at their home and hoped to find homes for them all. My Dad adopted our raccoon Rascal the next day. The day after that local government authorities seized the remaining babies and “euthanized” them. Rascal was a blessing disguises as a raccoon. I’m glad my Dad rescued him but still infuriated Ohio (at least back then) treats/ treated abandoned raccoon babies as vermin fit only for extermination

Years ago, I had two. Got them as Kits. Male and Female. More than likely, brother and sister. They were raising hell at a bird ranch that a friend had. They lived in the house for the first three years. Had their own room. One day, while they were running amuck thru the house, the Female figured where there's water there must be fishes. She ripped a hole through the side of the water bed. (That should tell you how long ago this was). So I built a very large cage outside with access to the house when we determined. I actually believe they preferred the outdoors. They had their own pool, monkey bars, a swing... and they had daily access to the house when supervision was available.

See, my front yard has nice, shady trees, which keep the soil moist, and encourage grubs. Any morning now, I will go out, and see the yard looking like a flock of giant moths ate the grass. It is pretty interesting though, to watch them. They dig steadily with their front paws, while rotating their entire body with their hind legs. I honestly don't think I could do that. Funny critters, and definitely staying outdoors!
