Hans Fenger, the DC5 were GREAT live! I saw them in Ft Lauderdale, Florida in '66. Mike had a sore throat and still gave it his all, sounding wonderful. Their energy was flowing from the stage. Have been to other concerts but never enjoyed one as much as the Five's.

A copy of the contract from April 1966 between ABC and Phil Spector exists on the Net, where the network granted a license for performance rights to Spector for his compositions "Down At TJ's (Theme)" (not heard in this clip) which Phil also SANG and incidental music ("bridges and cues"). Also stated is that the "TJ's special" was videotaped on July 13, 1965.

No, Gerald, this was a pilot that nobody bought, so neither this nor any other episode ever actually aired. Phil was being very optimistic in the closing segment when announcing his lineup of future guests, though at the time, had "TJ's" been picked up, he probably would have had no problem getting all those named to appear.

I never heard this show either, even though I was very much into any show that featured rock and roll at the time that this aired. One of the comments that I constantly heard during the DC5's rise to fame was that they were better than the Beatles. While it is true that they were far more proficient musically, they lacked the rebellious attitude that was so prevalent at the time. A case in point is Bob Dylan, who could barely sing, yet was at the top of his game. But the DC5 sold records nonetheless because, after all, they were very good and well polished. As for Phil Spector, it looks like he was wearing wigs even then. I see that lately he sports a chrome-dome, but then again, he isn't presented with a whole lot of choices.

But the worst wig in this video so far (I'm not quite halfway through it) has got to be the blond-haired woman sitting next to one of the DC5 during "Come Home". My goodness, what is it made of? And she's got way too much makeup on, even for TV. By the way, I am female. Maybe guys see it differently. And in fact, I didn't realize Spector was wearing a toupee. I figured it was the long-haired style of the day.

This appears to be a sort-of successor to NBC-TV's "Hullabaloo." I know David Winters was the choreographer on "Hullabaloo." And there are a few of Winters' typical dance numbers in this TV pilot, which I'm guessing was to essentially be a profile of a different music act each week, in conjunction with live performances by said act at the fictional venue called "TJ's," and with different celebrity hosts, perhaps, each week, or maybe Sal Mineo and Phil Spector continuing.

Both the Dave Clark 5 and the Beatles did songs called "Because", and both knew how to spell it. None of this "cos", "cuz", "bc", or "b/c" madness. I excuse "'cause" if it is spelled with the beginning apostrophe and is a direct quote of someone's cut-off syllable or is used in a song or poem to fit the beat, as the DC5 do at least once in their "Because". Other titles (of different songs) shared by the two groups are "Don't Let Me Down", "Glad All Over", and "Julia".

Always wished DC5 singer Mike Smith had hooked up with a band who could play their instruments as well as he could sing. His lead vocals are some of the finest on record, but all we ever got to see on TV was the band miming to their record. That's also why we never got a concert album or a reunion tour from this band, because it would have exposed Dave Clark as a musical fraud.

This was an interesting band. It was basically owned lock stock and barrel by Dave Clark. Why did they split? Dave clark called it quits when the band was just not turning a buck anymore. As other groups music embraced the hippy era psychedelic etc. the DC5 never really changed with the time all that much. This is a very compressed answer but I think it's basically correct.

inkey2 Yes, I see it that way too. The beatles wrote and performed songs for the early to mid teen market for 2 years and then chose to write different types of songs. The Dave Clark 5 followed the Beatles into that mid teen market but couldn't write the songs to sustain those same fans as they grew older. I can't imagine Dave Clark playing drums on Sgt. Pepper type music. It's too bad though, because DC5 are such an exciting band.

They may not have been pulling in the big bucks, but my understanding is Dave was contractually tied into making records until 1971/73,regrouping to form DC and Friends. Not sure why Mike was the only one to stay on. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It seems crazy to disband if DC was obliged to put out records.

Mike Smith was definetely a true pianist, a keyboardist and a great singer as well. I saw him playing live, many times later on during his solo career. In fact, the whole entire members of the group were all actual musicians. DC-5 wasn't fraudulous in any way, except that they would lip sync their songs, during télévision show productions, like alot of pop groups of that same time period, would normaly do! Personally, i think that Dave Clark was just a mediocre Drummer, that's true...!

Phil definitely was nuts. Diagnosed in the 90s with bipolar disorder. His father likely had it too, and he killed himself when Phil was 9 years old. I have a theory that Phil's mental illness, his mania, was just severe enough for him to function, and it allowed him to really think outside the conformist box and usher in a second generation of music. If he were around now he would have been medicated and probably not as creative.

Interesting novelty archival color footage of the band which is by far the most boring presentation of the group of all of the bootlegged footage this viewer has seen. Sal was a great actor and a cool cat but using words like "gas" outside of a surfing context and "swingin" firmly implants him in the era of the Rat Pack, not The British Invasion. The highlight of the show is Spector.
