As an RN, I have practiced nursing for 46 years. What I have witnessed in the increased number of obese patients is astounding. We NEVER saw people weighing over 300 lbs. much less over 600 pounds. Before 1990, we never had “big boy” beds or oversized wheelchairs because nobody was ever that big. But now, the epidemic is horrific and mind boggling and it’s getting progressively worse. As nurses, caring for these patients puts us in danger of being injured from the shear amount of weight we are dealing with.

We've become more sedentary as a society with each generation. The rate of depression and trauma has skyrocketed. When people get to this size, there's always a psychological element because food is being used as a drug. I think that the biggest factor is processed food. There's so much of it now and food manufacturers deliberately put additives and flavorings to cause a dopamine spike that people get a form of addiction to. They actually call obese people who eat a lot of their processed frankenfood "heavy users". It does ultimately come down to personal responsibility. I know that but these manufacturers are diabolical in a way.

I’m a big guy but I didn’t start gaining until night shift. Now I’m trying to get back in shape. I wanna be in the kind of shape I was in in the police academy a few years back. I can’t imagine letting myself get to 600 I don’t even like being the size I am now. Sometimes I think it’s best to just put some of these people out of their misery. Not trying to be mean but so many are just hopeless and a drain to society.

The most obvious and glaring factor that all of these people share is that each of them has an enabler - they’re not shopping and picking food for themselves. Yeah, I mean I’ve been shocked by a lot of the details of the various videos that I’ve seen on this show. But I would agree with you that probably the most shocking part is how the hell are they able to afford that much food. I’ve only ordered from companies like DoorDash several times and it’s when I had emergency surgery a couple summers ago. Other than that, I’ve just always refused to order because, I just feel it’s really overly expensive and for two I would rather get the exercise. It’s just a small amount of exercise walking in the parking lot. I truly don’t understand Anyone could afford just the fast food restaurants alone never mind all of the deliveries. I do understand that they are probably all on government assistance of some type, but it’s still insane. And I guess they are not paying rent because they all just have some enabler that allows them to stay at their house, but it still just truly mind-boggling how they can afford to live.

He's my spirit animal. Some of the patients don't take any responsibility for their bad eating habits by caring more about delicious high calorie junk they crave rather than be serious about Dr Now's diet plan and make commitments to stick with his plan with consistent weight loss as a result. I wouldn't blame him for refusing to help someone like a James K, Lisa F and this morbidly obese patient. It's a waste of time to help those who could careless about their problems or don't want help. They remind me of my maternal grandma because she and them were like people falling off the cliff with people catering and throwing rope, but they didn't do the work to climb up which is taking care of their bodies and wellness by making the right, productive and responsible choices. My grandma didn't do that before breaking her ankle nearly 3 years ago. My family and I always had to visit her if we wanted to see her due to her anxiety of any drive that's not local to where she lives. She didn't seek psychotherapy or speak to a psychologist in her house about her mental problems when she had opportunities by God to do so. It's not a good enough excuse if she were to say that wasn't common when she grew up as a child or as a young adult. She's 84 and I'm nearly 23 and I know that psychologists and psychiatrists were around decades before I was born. The practice started in the late 19th century way before she was born. Unfortunately, she wanted to be set in her ways and didn't mind disappointing her family by not showing up to family gatherings before her ankle injury. Since last year, she has dementia and now her whole family and caregivers have to cater to her needs at a local hospital. I get that dementia and alzheimer's disease can be common with senior citizens, but every person 70 or over who can still function has the opportunity to lower the risks of getting those memory diseases just like how overweight people have the opportunity to decrease their risks of becoming morbidly obese by seeking medical help and advice from any kind of doctor or do counseling with a social worker.

I have no judgment about these poor people. I have had my problems with alcohol, so I understand it is just another form of addiction. I find it deeply concerning how many people on here find the absolute bare minimum of kindness shown from medical professionals to patients to be awe-inspiring. Is this a reflection of your own personality, or is the US healthcare system REALLY that appallingly neglectful? I don't think I can recall working with a single healthcare professional who would refuse to do something as simple as hold the hand of a scared patient under their care - even without an audience watching them!

@@callum9999 It's different in this situation because she could have very easily been embarrassed. Needing a transport team to wheel you out of your home because you're too heavy to walk while there's cameras shoved in your face can be understandably humiliating. Especially knowing the fact that fat people are incredibly likely to be undermined or mocked or made fun of in medical settings. @Jessica Did you forget that she is a human, that she has the right to her body? These people have the mental capacity to know what they are doing, if they choose to eat themselves to death, that is their choice. Besides these people are addicts, unless you have lived with one, you have no clue how manipulative and mean they can get when they don't get what they want, they will use every trick in the book to get what they want and will make life a living hell and will wear you down until you feel so defeated you give in for a moments peace, they will use anything they can to guilt you into getting what they want, then anger and trust me, it doesnt stop, ever and no one should have to live like that and deal with a fully grown adult demanding something, so let them, she knows she will die. She knows it all but puts food first, and until she actually wants to lose weight, she won't. Besides addicts always find a way, they will find someone else, or with food they can just order it in, again she is an adult, if she wants to throw her life down the drain for food, she has every right to, its her body, its not anyone else business to decide what she does, we can all disagree with her but it's still her choice, no one can force her to lose weight too many on the outside think its so easy to deal with this situation and it isnt, this teats families apart, and I find it completely unfair how so many immediately blame the friends and family like they are the ones who made her like this when they didn't SHE made the choice, SHE eats the food, people who get this big have a immense problem with food that needs EXTENSIVE therapy, not a tv show that exploits these people and doesn't even provide the mental health support they really need more than surgery at this point. Either way, people need to stop blaming the people, do you blame the fast food places? Do you blame the factories that make the food and the companies that put sugar into almost everything and the companies that put out products that say they are diet friendly when they aren't or say they are healthy or fat free and healthy when they aren't either.. no one I've seen in the comments has said a thing about the companies that make our food, yet blame the family immediately, but the two are the same, if the companies didn't make junk food then people wouldn't get so morbidly obese as quick or be able to get large quantities of just fat and sugar, the reason they arent to blame is because they don't force people to buy their food, people make their choice, I don't see people saying that fast food places should be shut down or should ban obese customers because they have a right to get whatever food they want, the same should apply to the families, they shouldn't gave responsibility over another adult and their choices, if they want to by all means but if they want to live their own lives without having to deal with an angry person screaming for food all day, then they should, these people are adults and know what they are doing, it should not fall to anyone else but themselves, they need to be the ones to put the work in, if they were actively trying and then family tried giving food they shouldn't, that's when they are now the problem, or if they are a partner who threatens to leave if they lose weight or constantly complains about them losing weight, they too are now the problem, everything else lies with the person.

I used to work on a bariatric surgery unit, it was astounding how many patients bossed us staff around and refused to do anything for themselves, even work with PT or wipe themselves (they just didn’t want to, they were so used to their caregiver and families doing it for them, they had no shame!) and many of them had complications after, from eating too much and stretching their stomachs out again. I'm glad the doctor took that stance with Joyce, because she's literally just wasting EVERYONE'S time in not putting forth any effort. As a retired Paramedic I can affirm what an incredible challenge it is to remove a morbidly obese patient from anywhere on a stretcher. I was doing it way before hydraulic stretchers came along and EMS/Fire crews risked getting injured every time. AND, it would take 8-10 people to safely remove one person like this, which would take them away from other potentially life threatening calls. Such a frustrating situation for everyone.

These may sound like hurtful things to say to patients, but in all reality, an RN's job is to make sure the patient can live safely at home after discharge. If they expect everyone to do everything for them, how is that going to impact her health, and the health of the people around them? I tell the morbidly obese to start small. Exercise your arms, your legs; whatever they can move. I am at about your weight right now but I am a 6'1'' male so I don't have such problems. The only similar problems that I have experienced is after doing pushups or other exercises on the ground I would stand up by putting my arms over my right leg and having basically my whole body weight on my right leg and my right leg would do the entire job of making me stand up. After doing so many times my right knee hurt so I had to pay attention in the next several days every time I was getting up to put my weight equally on both legs and to use my hands to get up as well so as to relieve the pressure from the right leg. Other than that, I am nowhere near like people on this show, I can do over 20 pushups.. 215lbs people are fully functional, I can even lift my whole weight and do 1 pull-up (which is horrible compared to 12 pull-ups that I was able to do when I had 60lbs less).
