this whole video resonates with me cuz of my stepmom. Hated her from age 8-20 pretty much have only been able to forgive her slowly over the past 5 years but living with her was a nightmare and damaged me so I fled to my mums place at 16. And I can see things now I couldn't see then such for example: I think she was being so strict on me that it became abuse because: she was a damaged person herself bullied as a kid so she went control freak over any resistance thinking I was the enemy, I was a kid......... One time she had a screaming match she even told me about her past, like why are you comparing me to your childhood bullies? just because I ask questions and doesn't always wanna obey?? Something's terribly wrong here! And I've also been bullied for 2/3 of my life but I can't imagine handling kids like that.

Jo Frost is such a strong character. She understands children in a similar way that Mr. Rodgers did; she understands children the way they SHOULD BE understood. And never tries to put down parents, she understands the struggles of parenthood and gives parents the help and guidance they need. It sucks that she’s been forced to a place like TLC, a TV network that prefers to produce shows to shock viewers and make fun of others. I’m glad she’s back on television, she is needed!!

Alisha Good I’ve never raised my voice or had to “have a firm hand”. You don’t need to be firm if you have Respect. Any child can get a parent mad... But to disappoint a parent is far worse. If you cannot outsmart a child and have to resort to raising your hand, yelling or any negative reinforcements like that... then the parent is failing. Not the child. It’s our responsibility as grown adults to be in control of our temper... we aren’t allowed tantrums. My mom always made it clear that I was allowed to ask why she was imposing a rule and to give my perspective if I disagreed with her reasoning. The result? I was legit one of the most obedient kids I knew, because I understood _why_ I was being told to do something and I had been able to air out any grievances I had about the rule with my mom, which often led to a mutual compromise halfway. My mom also always made sure to take my opinion into account when making big life decisions like "should we immigrate to Canada?".

Jane Baker that behaviour doesn't just spring out of nowhere. Teach them early about the boundaries of behaviour. Parents think their kids are ' cute' sometimes.

In this situation you ignore it. If you put the kid in time out and the child is swearing at you they are doing it to get a reaction and to get attention as a way of wrestling power back. The punishment of time out is to be confined to an isolated space with no attention. Responding is giving them attention and so they'll do it every time they go into time out. But if you ignore it then you've neutralised their attempt and you're still in control and they probably won't try it again too often. If a child isn't in time out and they start swearing then you give them a warning and if they do it again you put them in time out as punishment because it's not being done to get a reaction out of you, it's just breaking the rules.

Good point. For me, I'll tell them that because she sweared at me, she's going to get an extra 6 minutes of time out, meaning sitting there 12min in total from start to finish. Isn't too long anyway. I was asked to stand for hours as a kid, even at 12 years old. And of course, as an Asian I was caned or smacked by my mother on the hand with a ruler or spoon till the ruler or spoon broke into two (that was in Asia, where beating as such was permitted, though not permitted in the western country I live in now). For one, that sort of beating is not physical abuse and it didn't leave any scar on me spiritually and in fact I approve of it; it was the verbal/emotional abuse, which my father was the main culprit of in my life, that stunted my emotional and intellectual development as a child and young adult

When I was a toddler I threw a temper tantrum in a grocery store. My mom totally ignored me and kept shopping while staying in eye shot of me. I tried it once more on my dad and he did the same thing. Never threw a temper tantrum ever again.

so did mine! I went through a phase of eating peas with my fingers and she told me if I kept it up she'd chop my fingers off. I thought she wasn't looking so i grabbed a handful of peas and shoved them in my mouth when I thought she wasn't looking and the next thing I heard was a *SMACK* - she'd got a meat cleaver out of the drawer and smacked it down on the serving hatch 'THAT will be your fingers next time I see you do that'. There's still a half inch gash in the wood of the serving hatch from where she hit it with the meat cleaver. My mum is from rural Croatia - they don't do warm and fuzzy parenting over there. I think I grew up alright, although peas still make me a little nervous...
