Brexit is going to have a major impact on the UK and EU relationship, but that doesn't mean it won't affect other countries too. In this video, we discuss the ways in which Brexit will affect the United States, the trade deals they could form with the UK post Brexit and what US leaders think of the whole thing.

Freedom of movement between the UK and US? Not even Canada has it. Do you really think you can have a better deal that Canada? They are the best of neighbours and even they have to follow immigration laws, there are special easier laws for Canadians and vice versa, but it's not freedom of movement.

Depends on the type of Brexit. May's deal won't affect them that much, but a hard brexit would be a bonanza for them., especially if some of the more loony libertarians get their way and zero rate all our import tariffs. Britain would then be the only country on earth without any trade deals at all, and would have to go around cap in hand to get something, anything signed up.

Being Bulgarian myself I found out the comment in the middle about Bulgaria losing by the US by a whisker cute in terms of romanticising haha Now seriously, it's obvious that the UK and the US have different objectives on trade and therefore the UK will be in a more-dependent position than it was with the EU with the US being 2 times larger of an economy... That being said, I hope this won't turn out to isolate UK from the world, despite some brits wanting that without facing the consequences, i.e. Brexit itself

@@luxembourger Ah, but the issue is when there are no regulations for country of origin or method of production, and an unscrupulous seller puts 'Parma Ham' on grocery shelves even though it is not produced in Parma, nor in the same way as the real thing, and you end up buying a subpar product. If you think that this is farfetched, it is literally happening with Wagyu beef. If you want to eat traditional Wagyu or Kobe beef outside of Japan, you are very likely not eating an authentic product because there is no strict requirement for sellers to be truthful about it. I don't think that the US wants this regulation gone so they can make Parma Ham that is just as good as the real thing; they want to sell their cheap ham at a markup playing on name recognition, which the regulation prevents.
@puschelhornchen9484
@puschelhornchen9484 5 жыл бұрын
Imagine a butcher from Parma, Italy who migrated to the US and continues with the receipts he always used to make ham, meat and so on. The regulation on geographical origin is not to protect smaller craftshop buisness per se, it mostly helps middle to big size companies who have reached a certain industrial scale and marketing power to sell their products on a larger than regional scale. I think also you can resort to "in the style of" labeling which of course can be seen as disadvantageous.

I remember going to New York on my 21st - the US dollar was nearly $2.20 to the GBP. I also remember when the Euro was introduced and going to France. Think that was over 2 Euros to the pound. Compare that to this year, when I visit Italy, & Germany. Never have I felt the pinch and the cost more abruptly - I realise how much spending power the UK has had in the past. Even Berlin was expensive compared to when I last went in 2015. If its this stark for mere consumers buying abroad, I can only think of the woes of commercial trade and production are currently having. The future looks a little bleak in that regard. Guess the only upside is that the lower value of GBP will increase tourism to London / places of interest

All the other countries in Europe, except Portugal and Switzerland, have recent experience of being occupied by a foreign power, who made their laws for them, and governed them. This is not the case in the UK - the last occupying force was in 1066, nearly a thousand years ago. So we have become used to governing ourselves. Many of those occupied countries did not seem to mind too much: More than one produced a government prepared to collude with the occupiers, and even over-enact some of the draconian laws their occupiers produced - reference Jewish persecution in France and Holland. The British have decided after a democratic vote that they do not like being governed from Brussels by unelected officials that they cannot remove. They do not like having to observe laws that are put in place for the benefit of other countries to the detriment of their own. They wish to exclude from the country murderers, rapists, beggars, welfare scroungers, drug dealers and anybody else who comes to victimise UK citizens. But they are not allowed to do so. Furthermore, they have to provide houses for these predators, pay them benefits, and welcome as many of their family as they choose to bring in. And they can't deport them, because they are EU citizens. If the US was governed from Bolivia or any other country, by unknown and unelected officials, if it was unable to deport undesirables, if it was forced by law to welcome, pay for and keep them indefinitely regardless of their willingness to work, it would be in the same position as the UK. By the way, Bolivia would be able to decide whether you were allowed to have matches, how powerful your vacuum cleaners are, and any other law they could dream up. British people will no longer stand for it. I doubt that Americans would stand for it in the first place. But if you think it is a good idea, suggest it to your Congressman..

I'm an immigrant from Australia and have undergone over 10 years of immigration difficulties in order to stay with my family, all of whom, through comparatively advantageous circumstances, are now UK citizens. My parents take umbrage at the fact that I have struggled so much while EU immigrants are able to come here freely. They believe that Brexit will enable the UK to strengthen their relationship with Britain's 'traditional' allies and treat Commonwealth countries like Aus 'more fairly'. I believe that Britain's relationship with Aus and the rest of the Commonwealth is not going to change at all, and it will continue to be as ceremonial (ie. lacking in any actual, beneficial substance for Commonwealth citizens) as it has been for decades. I voted (one thing I am allowed to do as a Commonwealth citizen) Remain, because I believe remaining is better for the UK as a whole. I'd be very interested to hear what you believe Brexit will mean for Commonwealth countries... and Aus in particular, of course. :)

India and the EU have been negotiating an FTA with the EU since 2007. The main obstacle in the process have been the UK. It is estimated that if the UK leaves the EU then the EU-India FTA is signed very soon after. Likely even April 2019. India which overtook the UK in 2018 as the 5th largest economy is unlikely to ever be willing to make a comprehensive trade deal with a UK outside of the EU.

Just wondering... if there's a hard Brexit, than the trade tariffs would be according to WTO at 5%. Wouldn't it be very cheap to buy a product in the US by a UK company and have it delivered in the EU? As you skip the import costs between US-EU it would be cheaper, not?

There is an obvious answer to the chicken and champagne problem. The US may agree that food has to be labeled with where it was produced. The UK may agree that the name/brand of the product is distinguished from the origin label. So, someone can sell a bottle of champagne that was actually made in Napa Valley. But, that will be discoverable to the purchaser by looking for the origin label on the bottle, even though the bottle is labeled as champagne.

The UK has shot itself in the foot. GMO foods from the US will flood the market, driving the price of non-GMO foods up and purely organic ones even more. People will get sick and unwell more often. Good thing there is the NHS...oh wait...PHS - private health service. Maybe obamacare will be better received in the UK. But that really doesn't matter, the US tourists could come to the uk. Or maybe start working here as well as the 30% of the NHS staff is from EU and would again be better off at home. Being from the EU I could be biased. Brexit could potentially be a good thing but not with the current lot of numpties running the show. Also, aligning yourself more with a country half a world away, instead of a 20min train ride is just ridiculous.

GMO foods that pass FDA standards don't cause health problems. There is no good evidence that organic foods are in any way superior to non-organic. ( while there have been a few studies that show positive results, there are far more that show no relation and end up getting out-weighed in any good meta-analysis).

Guys, as a German-American living in the states, it is totally possible to buy non-hormone fed beef. It's all about options. I think the EU narrative has always primarily been on supporting European goods. There's nothing wrong with a Californian wine either, it's quite good! Do keep in mind that swine-fever and mad cow disease both started in Europe, so not sure if the EU meat production standards are necessarily better. Perhaps America has a better sanitary regimen with animal products, eggs in the states are always clean, in Germany they're covered in chicken crap, that raises E.coli contamination probability. In the end everyone is just trying to promote themselves, and gain an advantage.

*@@miguelsilva9118 * the families of the dead can sue. In general businesses which kill their customers don't stay in business. The life expectancy in virtually all western countries is at or near the longest it's ever been. And many millions of those people are eating the things you're so terrified of. Clearly you're exaggerating the risks. If we take your way of thinking seriously we have to ban cars and alcohol and countless other things. The government is not your mom or your dad. The government doesn't have a legitimate role to protect you from yourself. You're expected to make your own choices and take personal responsibility for them, like an adult. Pretending the sky is going to fall if an EU regulation lapses such that part of the US food supply makes it to the UK is just silly and you know it. It's a trivial issue of no significant consequence, and even if it were a problem that problem is easily solved by existing methods to redress grievances resulting from actual harm: tort law.

The Parma ham is actually a very bad thing. In practice truckloads of animals get transported to be processed in or close to Parma. Then the Ham is redistributed again with the label. There is no advantage in the butcher being located there. It only increases greenhouse gasses by logistics and increases the strain on livestock. Champagne is another matter. Because taste in wine is determined by the soil and the climate. Both are depending on the location. For sparkling white wines there more well known alternatives. As example Italy has Prosecco which is produced 200km north of Venice.

I would love to see a strong UK-US trade deal. It could help both countries and massively soften the blow of brexit. While I doubt free movement will ever be a thing, I would hope that President Trump and PM May will be able to work on a deal that allows for goods and services to be exchanged. The US is the world’s largest economy, larger than that of the EU. So a deal between the two would definitely be a plus to both sides.
