The Last Ronin makes a lot of sense when you consider that the current 'creative team' on the main TMNT comics have killed the books with fanfiction-esque garbage. The Last Ronin is a good farewell to a TMNT being killed by stupidity.

The only thing that I am not looking forward to is the inevitable milking of this "one shot" run. And you know damn well they'll go the Disney route and say that the gap between the original comics and Last Ronin leaves tons of stories to be told. Only for some strange reason those stories will mainly involve "strong" female characters and less the actual turtles themselves. But yeah replacing April and Casey Jones daughter with.... April and Casey Jones daughter was completely inane.

I wasn't sure at first but by the end I was fully on board as the fight steadily goes more and more "classic" until the end. If I had any complaints it's that i thought the villain was a little too thinly sketched. His rant about godhood seemed more like a parody than anything to the character.

I assumed it was Michaelangelo, thematically and as you said in the review, it makes sense for Mikey to be the last Ronin, However I think raph could've also been an inspired choice, to have character growth from his anger, learning to use it as a driving force. But also I would've like them to have either Donatello as the last ronin or survived an attempted death. If you are aware of the old plastron Cafe short story "Old Times" you know what I mean.

Based off just the TV series - the original - Michaelangelo was also the most comedy inclined and the most likely to take nothing serious. He was considered the least overtly skilled ninja. Donatello I agree, might have been focused into the technical side and smart enough to see it coming to be able to Mcguyver his way into a loophole, but he also would have been very likely invested in some project and easily taken out in an ambush. He's a genuis. They tend to be single minded when they're onto something. Raph has a crap ton of anger; but he's the berserker. He'd go down swinging, and while I could see him surviving just to spite everyone and get revenge - he's the most obvious choice overall. Too easy to see that one coming (nevermind that he's my spirit animal) Leonardo was again, too easy to see because he's the most technically skilled at combat [Arguably; it's always been between him and Raph, and the difference in their styles is the deciding factor] He's the defacto leader, so of course he could survive on his own. It does make sense that the loss of his brothers would scar him terribly, but where Mikey cracked, Leonardo would just galvanize. Use it, instead of being haunted by their ghosts. It would give him the power to see vengeance properly enacted. So it wouldn't be him with the way they made the memories haunt him (Leonardo was also the one that more intuitively grasps Splinter's lessons on spirituality, and acceptance)

I like the four turtles a lot but Raph fanboys after the 2007 movie have this dellusion about him being simply the strongest and most skilled of the four when in reality he's the most inconsistent one overall, except when it comes to being the one with less room to grow.

Even if you’re taking into account the voices of the 🐢 in the original TMNT movie trilogy; it’s kinda surprising albeit not too shocking that Mikey is the Last Ronin. Robbie Rist (the voice of Mikey) is better remembered as Cousin Oliver on the Brady Bunch as it transitioned from first-run cancellation to syndication from the 70s and beyond. If people dub Ted McGinley as TV’s reigning king of ‘jumping the shark’; then Robbie Rist was the OG dethroned by McGinley IMHO… Cowa-🤬-bunga indeed, Razörfist!!!!!

@@simplegarak It happened after the weirdness REALLY ramped up (around the time Chris Allen started drawing it, when they fought the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, learned the Eye of Sarnath was actually the eyes of a blind alien, and met Christopher Columbus). Future Raph and Don have to save their brothers from Amagon, the Shredder and Rat King. Raph's wearing a ball cap and missing an eye. Thanks for reminding me of Raph in the Venom suit. I missed the issue where that happened as a kid and it bugged me for months why Raph was in a different outfit.

Bit of a tangent, but do you know what I'd like to see? A TMNT comic with art by Tom DuBois. For those of you who don't know, he was the guy who did all the box art for all of Konami's US releases back in the 80s and 90s. And I fucking LOVE the box art he did for Turtles in Time and Hyperstone Heist.

I'm going to play devil's advocate on the Shadow/Casey thing. From issue #1 it was clear that The Last Ronin did not take place in Mirage continuity. The turtles' headbands were multi-colored and it's specifically mentioned that Karai is Shredder's daughter (a common trope in TMNT media, but Shredder and Karai weren't related in the Mirage canon). And if they really wanted to drive home that Casey Jr's DNA had been altered as a result of her parent's exposure to the turtles, it's an easier pill to swallow if the exposure began via both parents before she was conceived. You're right though that it really should have been Shadow and for that matter, The Last Ronin should have taken place within Mirage canon. Why bother giving the turtles multi-colored bandannas when they never once graced a single cover?

Despite getting the god tier tmnt 2012 series out of the deal, I genuinely fear for the turtles' future. Viacom's buyout will be the death nail in the turtle franchise. It's pretty evident that they see the turtles exclusively as a children's franchise. That much cements the notion that all future turtle media from here on out will be milquetoast fred wolf nostalgia wank with a healthy dose of "hello fellow kids" trend chasing in the mix. The comics being as bad as they are now reinforces all this I think. Enjoy whats left while you still can.

It's refreshing to listen to an actual fan pointing out the bs, some of which is pretty glaring: the art quality inconsistence, senseless changes and the anticlimatic parts, above all the epilogue). Because hearing consoomers who also got excited about the Rogen movie and Venus making a comeback claiming this is the bestest turtles anything ever is probably what got us that bad, bad omen epilogue.

I think the only lesson that IDW has taken from this is that comics in the vein of Last Ronin sell well, they're doing this exact premise with Transformers Last Standing Bot, but with a western theme instead of post-apocalyptic.

@@heroesytumbas Nah, actually goes kind of dark with Rodimus ripping a defeated bots head off by the jaw in the first issue, and the second issue a group of bots have resorted to eating organics instead of energon because their past wars depleted the entire galaxy of the stuff. Other than that, it basically is Last Ronin, right down to having flashbacks of past events, but it's not as good.

Finished the Graphic Novel series and I will say, I agree that the epilogue shouldn't have happened as it undercut the impact of the ending. Made the impact of it mean nothing. Now I am going for the Elric saga(the other part of the nerd stuff I bought.)

In IDW comics reincartion is a thing.

In IDW continuity, the mutagen has the memories of the people you are exposed to during mutation hard-coded into the mutagen. You inherit their memories, personality and experience. The turtles behaved like Hamato Yoshi's sons because Splinter had his memories, and their forst mutagen contact was from him. Safe to say the mutagen the baby turtles are sloshing around in ia from Michelangelo's blood. So they will probably have his brother's memories and personalities.

I was really hoping for something akin to how the previous turtle died, as in, dealing a huge blow to the Foot Clan? What a waste. Still a great book, though. I picked up the HC of The Last Ronin on Saturday. I started this video on Sunday. I stopped it at the spoiler alert. Then proceeded to read the amazing The Last Ronin. I can’t speak for everyone. I thought, April was having the same problem Michelangelo was having ie having conversations with the dead in your own head. I didn’t think the bed was big enough for two people. I agree with Razor go buy and read this amazing and hopefully stand alone story

Many great points here. Totally agree on the art, Eastman should have done the whole comic. I didn't care for the ending, and found the fight choreography to be so weak, in comparison to the original comics where you can see their moves, this is just kind of a mess, especially the final showdown. I liked it though, I'd give it 8/10 though, could have been a masterpiece.

Got to admit I read the comic and it ended up making me cry and that's a feat in its self as I am autistic and find it hard to cry I do agree with most your points tho razorfist keep up the great work and that ending was epic to cowaf***ING bunga back at ya

Gunslinger Spawn and King Spawn RULE. Theyve been so good. I just got one issue of the Scorched. It's cool, too.
