@@bobpage6597 That sort of "science" was accepted as truth until the 1600s (in the west). In the last 200 years our understand of chemistry and physics has altered considerably. Anything you'd recognize as a computer only came to exist in the last 100. And in 100 years from now there is a good chance that scientists will reject most of the theories we think of as fact as well.

@pepe66662 жыл бұрын
@@Chris_Sizemore your conclusion is pretty ignorant. its an old cliche that has never been true. the mistakes of the past are not indicative of the mistakes of the future. we dont just 'reject' things. technology improves & we learn the bounds of where theories are true. newton isn't rejected - we just expanded into more domains than he was aware of. hell, we still use his physics models - calculus - many more things. after all - if what you say is true, then in the future we should have different ways to make mistakes as well. different from how you predict. so what you say amounts to sweet fuck all
@Chris_Sizemore2 жыл бұрын
@@pepe6666 First, lets not confuse mathematics with science. Those are two distinctly different disciplines and the way they are developed and "proven" are very different. Second, theories are never 'true'. Theories are theories and the best theory is the most valid until a better theory is validated. This is why the scientific method is so vital, because it allows individuals to reproduce the experiments and independently verify the theory the experiment was designed to test. This is also why 'science' that relies on statistical analysis and neglects experiments isn't science, because it isn't independently verifiable. Though if the scientific community continues to advance in the direction they have been following for the last 30 years experiments will be a relic of a bygone era and all theories will be judged on peer review and how well they fit with the current trends in the community. Right now the scientific community rejects plenty of people that call into question theories that are only supported by statistical analysis without any experiments to back them. Why? Because those 'scientists' can't afford to have the credibility of their work questioned because they have no experiments to verify their theories. If they allow people to openly question their theories it comes out that they can't actually defend their work because there are no actual tests of their validity. Or in another 70 years the scientific community could correct itself and demand that the only disciplines that be referred to as science be ones that use experiments. That is highly unlikely. Being called a science gives a great deal of prestige and the discipline that have cloaked themselves in that holy mantel won't want to give up their hard 'earned' legitimacy. Now lets not confuse useful theories and accurate theories. Newton is still taught because it is easy to understand. If you go into physics you'll learn Newtonian physics, and then you'll be introduced to the theories that replaced those, and then the theories that replaced those. Moving from theories that are easily demonstrated to theories that are not as easy to demonstrate is a proven teaching method. Starting at the most current theory without any background means the student lacks a proper foundation to understand the theory they have been presented with. Heck, Chemistry starts off teaching students with theories that have been completely disproven because it is a necessary background to understand organic chemistry. Honestly, I don't feel like I'm the one that is ignorant here.

Pope Paul V was initially sympathetic to some of Galileo's ideas, but the scientist had made many powerful enemies by ridiculing proponents of geocentrism. Each episode a well written morality play based on complex story lines, and character development around a central theme, with extraordinary costumes, sets, soundtrack and effects, brought to us once a week .... and keeping true to the vision of the creative genius that was Gene Roddenberry At the time I remember being just immersed in the production as I was in the story. To me it was the story within the story. As it was woven throughout with elements of the human condition the conflicts and growth the characters saw is all still very relatable But maybe that's just me, tho considering the legions of fans, I highly doubt it. That planet fly-by in the opening would in an instant release my mind from the bonds of Earth leaving me numb to my physical self to be taken once again on a fantastic voyage transported from my chair.

Curious that they placed the anvil on a wooden support rather than on solid ground in the first place.
@SightForMemories3 жыл бұрын
Isn't that usually how you anchor an anvil?
@benjaminhackett88963 жыл бұрын
@@SightForMemories Actually yeah, I guess it doesn't usually get put on the ground but on a large block of wood, like a section from a tree trunk. Seems though that a section of tree trunk would be quite substantial though and not quite fitting the description of “collapse” and “structure.”

1:01 If it was heavy it wouldn't have wobbled when data put it down. I demand they reshoot this scene using CGI to make everybody look young again and correct this, even if it costs millions of dollars.

*Question:* How much do you think that anvil weighed in Thine Own Self episode?
@IkeFoxbrush3 жыл бұрын
In reality not much since it was clearly made of styrofoam, but an anvil that size could weight 200 kg or more (hard to tell exactly since its an unusual shape). The one in the first scene might be about 30 to 50 kg, that's why the guy is able to carry it as well. (Note: I know next to nothing about anvils except they are a popular prop for cartoon violence, just looked it up on Google because I was bored.)

The writer of the episode screwed up this one. It should've ended with Data going back to the village to one, show that he's alive; and two, say he actually saved them from the plague.
