To Tell the Truth 9/77 - Garry Moore's last episode - Part 1

In early 1977, host Garry Moore left the show unannounced mid-season which led to some controversy. So Garry appeared for one last show at the start of the 1977-78 season.
And you can clearly tell he retired just in time, too; check out his rapsy voice.

Gary Moore was one of the real, class acts of TV. When they tried to throw Henry Morgan off of "I've Got A Secret" because of alleged (and untrue) "Communist ties", Moore told CBS no Morgan no Gary Moore. He never played "star". Lived outside of NYC under his real name Garrison Morfit, and was by all accounts, one the nicest, most down-to-earth people in the business.

Last night, we've heard the sad news, Joe Garagiola has died. He was a semi-regular panelist on "To Tell The Truth" before he ended up as a game show host since he took over for Gary Moore. After that, he was a terrific sportscaster for years, and he will surely be missed. RIP :-(

Garry Moore was a pleasure to watch on TV hosting To Tell The Truth. He also hosted a variety show for CBS in the fifties, where Carol Burnett got her start and which prefigured Johnny Carson by several years. Garry Moore also was very social towards the panel on To Tell The Truth.

Garry Moore's voice sounded scratchy after months of hiatus as Joe Garagiola took over for the rest of the previous season. That voice is from throat cancer from all those years as a heavy smoker. Bill Cullen was also a heavy smoker.

Why is it that the successor of a game show for hosting is on the panel before the former leaves? Bill Cullen was a panelist on password plus before Allen Ludden left. It is strange

Your description is misleading in that he *didn't* retire "just in time" - he lived 16 more years after this.

I had no idea Mr. Kalter had been around, a while; none, better than Messrs. Wendell("Password" as, well as Mr. Letterman's, "Late Night...")and, Mr. Kalter, for Mr. Letterman's, "The Late Show..."

In the early 60s my dad worked as a charter pilot in the Bahamas. One day Mom and her mom along with my sister went to the airport to pick up Dad. The plane came in, the passenger came out....it was Garry Moore!! Nana asked if she could take a picture...he said, "yes"! When the photos came back, Nana sent one to Garry.. He sent it back... autographed!! How nice!!

Early on What's MY Line he was off for like 8 weeks or more and he had surgery On his throat then said he had nodels on his voice box and after surgery he couldn't talk at all but it came back slowly as he healed up. I guess here it came back. Smoking caused a lot of actors to die. Even my family too. Bad stuff that tobacco but we choose to smoke nobody held a gun to our heads to make us smoke we did it cause we wanted too. I miss all these old stars they was stars back then they could act and even their faces showed how they felt not like today these so call actors today can't act at all. They have no character in their faces or eyes. The olds ones did I like the older movies. They had it all. They didn't talk politics either they never said anything about how they felt or who they liked.after the election they honored the Persident not like today. These stupid people they call actors could act their way out of a wet paper bag even.
