I have since tried mounting it on TOP of my display and this does NOT work at all! Even if pointing it down towards you at an angle. So you must have it fitted low, but of course without obstructions (arms, wheel etc.) there are 3d printed mounts available for fitting it just above your wheel base if you don't mind a little DIY or knock something up yourself.
@AdamsOlympiaАй бұрын
I just watched another video of a someone who mounted it offset to the left of their wheel (attached via a clip mount on their left aluminum profile post) and it seemed to work great with their 55" TV) Video title "Make your big TV sim racing setup even better" .. Looks like an ideal mounting solution.

Hi. I have mounted the tracker above my 55" TV, 100cm away. I have a monitor over the TV. Directed diagonally downwards. Works perfectly. But: Only head movement, no eye tracking. Windows Hello also works. I had to do it this way, because otherwise my steering wheel will block detection.
@boriskosloff75425 күн бұрын
Yep. The device can actually be mounted anywhere and in any position (upside down). Just watch the video made by the Sim Racer 'Random Callsign'. In OpenTracker you then change all offsets and it will work - head tracking that is if the distance is larger than 95cm. Quite frankly, eye tracking is neat but not truly needed.

Via ingame settings on games that support Tobii eye tracker, you can usually fine tune the head rotation and how far it moves you in that direction. You can also set a dead zone so that it requires a certain level of rotation before it kicks in which can contribute to less sea sickness.

I personally have mine mounted, and raised off my wheel base. As always mate, top notch content for the community.

Sadly "decent" webcams don't really exist even in 2024! lol So you'll need very good lighting on your face (which is fine if you don't mind), the Tobii will of course work in total darkness if needed.

I had the same reaction recently Karl. I bought a monitor stand and remembered i had a Chinese knock off trackir5. Thought I'd give it a go, i was using vr until recently for racing, exclusively. It works so well, not perfect, occasionally annoying, but I'm learning the solutions to the occasional irritation. And it's not as though VR is irritation free itself. I'll still use my vr, but right now I'm enjoying not fumbling around for the button I'm looking for on my wheel.
@BrittlespeedАй бұрын
I had one of these and sold it. I wanted to use it on my sim when I only had a single monitor. My experience was that you cannot use it behind your wheel as you wheel and hands will get in the way of tracking and not work properly. So I tried it on top of my monitor and it doesn't work properly either. The sensors aim up, so it won't see your eyes the way it should. Maybe others have had better luck doing it that way. Otherwise, it really worked great and in my eyes, better then TrackIR because you don't need to wear anything to make it work.
@BrittlespeedАй бұрын
@Karl Gosling , try it on your main rig and have a part B to this please.
@KarlGoslingАй бұрын
Yeah I did say in the video this would be a problem and some sort of ingenuity would be needed to get it to work on a rig... concluding it's really for desk based racers.

I've been using headtracking for years now and I can't play certain games without it (namely, Euro Truck, Flight Simulator and Elite Dangerous). I started with FaceTrackNoIR with a regular webcam and now I got TrackIR. I love headtrack with triple screens. Nice to know about the distance issue, as I can't use it in my current rig.
@yamyam60Ай бұрын
Does it eventually track your eyes or your head movement because I noticed you turning your head? it would have also been a good idea to try it out mounted at the top of the screen because I am sure most sim racers would have to do that with the wheel in the way. I think I either watched a video or read somewhere on the net that it was not so effective when mounted on top of the screen but I may be wrong.
@GarageRCRАй бұрын
That was my thought exactly. I'm thinking that was the reason why he used a controller... C'mon Karl!
@KarlGoslingАй бұрын
No one moves only their eyes and not their head (try it! lol) but It tracks eyes or head or both depending on the game, ACC is head only. It will not work on top of the screen, I have since tried. I used a controller because setting up a wheel up at my desk was not an option (I only have my Asetek Invicta here which cannot be desk mounted) and I quite clearly said a few times you must have your wheel an arms etc not blocking the camera and went on to say how you could try to get around this.
@roisingtommy25 күн бұрын
Depending on the game you can configure it to use 80% head tracking with 20% eye tracking which will both track head movement with smaller adjustments based on where the actual eye is looking. The usefulness of this is not necessarily that great but I've tried that configuration for Star Citizen and it works. In Star Citizen, if you add a basic webcam to the mix on top of the monitor the character will mimic both your head movement AND face expressions.

Interesting video! I am curious if the virtual HUD can be a problem with the eyetracker? I mean usually you have something in your HUD in the corners of the screen where you take quick looks during racing, like the track map or the drivers list or the tires display etc. In this case I would not want the ingame view to change, I think that would be distracting. Did you test that kind of thing or did you turn the ingame HUD off?

I just have 16:9 but surely another option would be is an ultra wide yeah? If we can see the corner exit sooner we can get on the power sooner which will make us faster. Isnt there no point to having this with an ultra wide because you can already see through the corner better?
@KarlGoslingАй бұрын
I'm using it on an ultrawide in this video! lol But it will depend on your FOV (not your monitor or aspect ratio) how much you can actually see, if you can see all your mirrors and corners already then there would be less to gain (cars along side you maybe).
@SC_4629 күн бұрын

Hi Karl, hope you're well and recovered from that eye injury a while back. Just a somewhat related racing sim question - yesterday the GT7 VR patch for PS5 PRO was released, which included an unusually specific Reprojection option. I'm confused as to what aspects of Reprojection this is aiming to resolve. If you have a PS5 PRO I would love to have your opinion on whether Rejection/motion blurring or ghosting is still present, or improved at all. Know you're great at technical matters! Great video on this Tobii eye tracker btw. It seems like an interesting option outside of VR.

Not usable like that. tried mounting it on top of my screen (55" ) and it just doesn't pick up my eyes as it's too far away. Agree that it would probably be awesome for FPS's and flight sim stuff...
