I like Ding's play. I've been following him for several years now. He's a quiet, soft-spoken genius. Big contrast to other top GM's. His win against Caruana in this tournament is a superb example of his deep strategic understanding of complex positions. Pleasure to watch a true master at work.

Truly deserved champion. Magnus was just outplayed and he looked very vulnerable especially in rapid and blitz. It only shows that Carlsen is human and it wasn't his tournament. Like he said it was damage control until the end.

Yeah, that Ne7 move was incredible. For him to make that move in a blitz game is absolutely mind-boggling. He also had two fantastic wins vs Fabiano Caruana and Anish Giri. King Ding is going to be a force to be reckoned with, in the years to come. I really think that he will be the next World Champion.

Thank you very much for your videos Mr King. I watch one at least once a week. This was a great game, and the more I play through the moves the more it becomes clear just how strong black's play is here. The queen can sometimes cause havoc in the enemy ranks because of its tremendous scope and power to double attack enemy pieces, but here, everything is always defended. After ding takes on c1 and his rook ends up there, it's allowing the black bishop on a8 to come to c6 while still defending the knight. After Qxa3, Bxg5 defends the loose rook, and I guess Ne4 from white simply runs into Bishop f4 check. Everything is held together like a strong web. Just brilliant.

Ding now enters the rarified air of the elite 2800 players , I think this is good for fans and good to see a new talent on the scene! My own feelings are that the blitz armageddon matches are not so important as the main tournament itself, but for spectators the blitz play is exciting. Thanks Dan for great coverage.

People should not be shocked. No one can stay on top forever, although this may only be a bump in the road, it seems to be a real loss of form especially in his blitz ability. A hangover from St. Louis perhaps. When Carlsen chewed up so much time in the first blitz game, I knew Ding had him. We shouldn't put the cart before the horse though. Ding still has candidates to win. I still think Vladislav Artemiev could be Carlsen's toughest opponent, although he has had a couple of lacklustre tournaments and hasn't even qualified for the Candidates tournament. It would be nice to see him in one of these tour events though. Qualification is supposed to based on rating and you have guys like Nakamura and Aronian down at 19th and 15th respectively. It is very hard for an outsider to breakthrough. These guys on the tour draw with each other endlessly so no one loses many ELO points.

Congratulations Ding Liren but I am not sure if he is really a WC contender now based on his performance solely on a single tournament. Magnus played an unprecedented streak of tournament victories the first half year, gained sky high rating points and as soon as he lowers his sword just a tiny bit, questions emerge about his supremacy ! May I suggest a simple, plain, down-to-earth reason? Fatigue! When you have been more active within 6-7 months than any other world champion before you, it's very likely that you eventually lose a bit of your motivation - that you simply get tired of the intensity of high-end games and feel that you have more than proven yourself. What did the others achieve in those 6-7 months? Well, Liren is now bound to win his first really strong tournament, albeit with the aid of a tie-breaker. Sure, he was middle-of-the-road in the last candidates, but nothing more. Sure, now he beats Carlsen after having had a completely disastrerous rapid-blitz match against him not so long ago. He may have uplevelled his game, maybe, but the others are also very eager to show their best in the candidates - where it really counts. Let Liren win the candidates or whoever, and then let the fortunate prove that he is BETTER than Carlsen, not just a player holding up his shield to parry the master's strokes. Sorry for the medieval metaphore. :-)

>unprecedented streak of tournament victories winning tournaments by drawing everyone and then winning once against the opponent rated 200 points behind you is not that impressive. Nor that unprecedented either. Kasparov was winning tournament after tournament, and usually with +3 or +4 or even more, Karpov was doing the same in his prime.

Ding has showed a lot of strenght in this tournament, in all 3 time controls also. None other has held his own in all time controls against Magnus. Nakamura and MVL have held their own in blitz and rapid at times, Caruana holds his own in classical, but they are no match with carlsen in blitz ( Caruana) and classical (Naka, MVL) and so it's very hard to see scenrarios where they could beat Carlsen in a WC match. Ding has shown that he has what it takes. Carlsen is still the favorite of course, but it'S more like 65/35% than the 85%/15% odds I'd give to the other contenders.

@@odin1313 >The competition was not as strong back in kasparov's days The competition was a lot stronger back in the days when players were not relying so much on memorizing lines from engines and had to actually think for themselves and improvise otb. The fact that Anand, a 50yo man, is able to go toe to toe with people half his age implies that the current field is not stronger than what used to be, just more prepared

@@TheDustAutumn What??You are saying Magnus is drawing every elite player and defeating lower rated players to win tournaments??Did you even follow the Zagreb GCT tournament? He went +5 in a tournament where there were no "outsiders",i.e,the lower rated players. He defeated Anish,Ding,Ian,Maxime and Hikaru in that tournament .Now this ain't a list of players "rated lower by 200 Elo points than him".These are the absolute top GMs. And please don't compare Gary's and Magnus' competitors. They are always the best players in the world at their respective times.

In fact, a high proportion of draws is an indication of a very high quality tournament. The tournament game Carlsen vs. Ding stands out as a good example: Carlsen surprised Ding with some great home preparation, and Ding just reacted perfectly over the board, annihilating Carlsen's initiative. That was a game for the books, ending in a draw. Top chess often produces games like that, don't expect one player mopping the floor with the other in a spectacular fashion. As a counterexample, look at Nepo's record. He was involved in half of the decisive games with 3 wins and 3 losses. I am sure he is very dissatisfied with his performance. If he wants to be an absolutely top player, he needs to be more steady, which will unavoidably result in a less entertaining performance (according to your evaluation). A 1W,10D,0L score would have been much more desirable to his 3W,5D,3L record. I am sure he would trade.
