I am white and didn't know the history of blackface. I knew it was wrong, but didn't know the specifications of why. After watching this segment I was EDUCATED, as were a lot of other people, on what the history of blackface means/is. We are a forgiving, thoughtful, and ever learning country. We've got to come together to move forward. We also need to take into part our EDUCATION SYSTEM. There's clearly improvements that need to be made, which is why we need more FUNDING FOR EDUCATION

i went to a predominantly white high school in Boise, ID class of 1997 with the foreign exchange students being the ones responsible for adding diversity to our school. We were taught in American History about blackface. It is being taught, but the real question is are people actually really paying attention and learning about our important American History.

Stefan Unson Because there is a long history of dehumanising black people with blackface.... Context matters. If you truly admire that black person then why not listen to the black community opinion. After so many years of being on the racist end of the stick, can you blame them if they want all blackface to stop, no matter your intention?
@unknownunknowns6 жыл бұрын
Benjamin Leow So sure blackface was considered racist in the past but it should not be always the case today! The whole point of dressing up is so people can tell the DIFFERENCE without asking. That mindset in the black community should change or you might as well do away with this tradition because all it does anyway is give people like Roland diabetes!
@benjaminleow6 жыл бұрын
When you say past, Jim Crow laws and blackface was literally 50 years ago. That is not that long ago. And I must say, it is really not your place as an asian american to tell black people to get over racism. I’m a Hispanic; I’ve been living here for some time now first thing I learned was to respect and educate myself about the cultures in this beautiful national that has so many; I learned about Martin Luther king my first year being here even before I spoke English, he inspired me and still does I also learn and I’m still learning about African American culture and their struggle ( sadly many won’t agree with me but I think still going on) and how not only they were treated but also how many white individuals thought less of them; and to me learning that and finding it so disturbing, disgusting and sometimes hard to learn makes me so mad that so many people don’t want to even put this on books for our generations to see and know this is unexplainable; human beings tend to look the other way if is not affecting them and that’s not right in order to start healing all the atrocities of some of these ancestors they have to accept that is was not ok and even though I know they are not personally the ones that did it ask for forgiveness; because is so easy to say “just move on”, or not even speak about it but the stuff the African American community went through is something we need to acknowledge so future generations won’t repeat it and maybe that’s why they still being treated the way they are because some people don’t want to acknowledge it is still a problem

And the sad part is blackface is much prevalent in other countries. Such as South Korea, Japan, and China. They dress up as black celebrities, singers, etc. (complete with blackface) and appear to lip sync their songs on these variety shows. One notable example was someone dressing up as Eddie Murphy from _Beverly Hills Cop_ and it received a helluva lot of backlash. Roland and Amy brought great points in this segment. Paul Mooney said it best: "White people love black culture. Not black people."

👍Roland & Amy! Why do we constantly have to explain this, and why so many examples are still today show us some white people don't care to get it and could care less about educating themselves on the history. I was taught Anerican history and then had to educate myself on black history and the gut wrenching stories my Grandmother told me. So now the next day she has a black panel to talk about it. You, your producers never thought to say hey, we need someone black on this panel too instead of an all white panel, C'mon now seriously, that was really bad. NBC get it together!
@ediththompson306 жыл бұрын
To you're point of why we have to explain. I just had a convo with another White viewer who said they knew blackface was bad but did not understand or take the time to read the history and specifics of why it was so hurtful and dangerous. Because our education system touches generally on those topics they don't get to the meat of why to not vilify the white race to young impressionable minds in grade school.

Cookie Tee the effect is to have people desensitized enough to tolerate racial bias and insensitivity in small doses. If we constantly experience this periodic flairs of racism, it becomes banal and racists can happily get away with their evil.

@@ediththompson30 We can't depend on the school system to teach us everything. If one cares enough about the topic he/she should further their self study/research. If there's a topic one doesn't know about then it shouldn't be uttered. Especially from a public figure. The educational system doesn't teach one about life. However, one continues to research how to budget, purchase a car and home etc.

Same with Mexican history. We made it an elective in our schools. We should embrace all cultures since we live in the U.S. I love being hispanic and many people embrace it. Now with the black culture if we try to embrace it, we get rejected by some black people not all of course. I am only speaking from my experience. I have been bullied by black women my whole life except for my husband's side of the family. I was never taught about blackface does that mean I am racist?

I've got to admit, that I was born just a year after Megyn (not in America but another Anglosphere country) and blackface was something that popped up here and there with Golliwogs, fell out of favour and essentially vanished into thin air sometime in the late 80s (due to the political correctness revisionism of the time) but had always been shrouded in mystery to people my age. There were a lot more questions than answers around it - the "black and white minstrels" thing was one of them. It was there, but never explained, and so it was a very difficult thing to properly get a grasp of. It also revolved around African-Americans and I didn't live in America.

Any of them are not ok. Period. It is truly embarrassing that America went through that period and Dr. King had to speak out because it was so bad. You know, it’s only been 60 years since Richard and Mildred Loving were hauled off in the MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, like criminals to spend time in jail. It was not until 1967 that the ACLU (omg I LOVE them) was able to help the Lovings repeal the law stating that interracial marriage was unconstitutional. Did you know that it took another 33 years for Alabama. THIRTY-THREE YEARS! I think that is absolutely abhorrent.

Privileged! Why does that word ,rocks your world..Truth is Truth..Just respect the conversation..It's futile to argue with the facts. It's ok to privileged..Totally ok. What's not okay is to be complicit at the cost of other people's plight. For Years..Not knowing about your American History is not an excuse anymore, Sorry to stir the pot. I didn't do that. Megyn Kelly the privileged Host did.

First of all,I didn't start name calling. If in my spelling at times there are foibles: That's because, I don't use the built in program. But,I understand english. I also have a vast vocabulary. So don't call me out on my foibles. Instead, check your own fallacy for not engaging appropiately in the conversation. That's typical avoiding the issues. I'm not on here trying to troll anybody. I was just engaging in the conversation about race. I take it you think you are a so called privileged person. Most people who are privileged are not cunning enough. That's why most get played. I never insulted anyone on here. So if you didn't like the conversation,then you shouldn't have commented at all. It only means you are part of the problem. Because, you are not evoking tangible arguments on here. So I'd rather you not comment or reply to me. By the way, I wasn't knocking privileged people. So Sorry to irate you,if you're one of them. I'am one of them too. Just so happen to a Black American living in Europe. That's the reason I engaged in the conversation. You have a good day,and a good life. Who ever you are.
@garfieldharrison5106 жыл бұрын
It doesn't mean you have to be complicit with whats vividly imminent in the country. I know that America wasn't for that Black Man. I don't know what point you keep addressing.I only made some comments regarding the issues concerning this particular video of privileged Megyn. You see it as having a victim mentality. Why? Because you was lucky to be born into the world without having a stigma or asterisk attached to you. But, you did. You are victim. YOu just don't realize it. Your complacency will get the best of you. I wouldn't want to live in a world where only one race thrives forward and others not. Being complicit while you see others being treated unfairly. That's the way you choose to live. Then more power to you.
@garfieldharrison5106 жыл бұрын
It would behove you to learn some history about others than yourself. Because, the true victim may turn out to be you. It's easy to be arrogant. Very hard to show true compassion for another human being. Because ,tha's what we are talking about here. Offending other people in your world.

That wouldn't be depicting her as "dumb" or "stupid" and wouldn't fit in with any stereotyping so I'm not sure how they're tying that in.

Understanding and knowing history is imperative to being aware of what cultures outside of one’s own have endured. By turning race into a character to be portrayed, we dehumanize others based on their differences. It encourages identifying “others” and it mocks the stories of where people come from. I’m pleased that Megan chose to hear, learn, and share what she learned. Take notes white people. This was the beginning of change for 1 woman and she’s using it to help change others.

me Maybe because they can tell the difference. I think the point is that when some immediately dresses in a costume you should know IMMEDIATELY what the costume is without having to ask. I don’t know but do you need to ask? If you’re dressing up as MLK, without the blackface whether you’re white or Latino, it would be harder to discern.
@unknownunknowns6 жыл бұрын
me At least I’m being honest and don’t want to be called a white person. Anyway, I thought the whole point was to be able to DISCERN whom you’re dressing up as without being asked, even if you have to darken your skin. I don’t know but all this holiday does is give people like Roland diabetes.
