Hey Dr Todd I was approached by him in a Target a few months ago. I am 6'2, over 200lbs, lift regularly, and it was still a terrifying experience. Esp because his short little cameraman wearing all black was obv recording us, and he did this in front of a young woman. He was trying to humiliate me on camera, but I refused to partake in the game, being fully aware (albeit in a state of anxiety). I reported to security and they said they were too afraid of him to do anything about it. I then reported it to the police. Then a few months later I see this article. I can tell you that his victim probably was in flight or fight response just as I was. It's embarrassing to admit this as a big tough guy, but fuck staying silent. Truly disgusting behavior, he's a walking sociopath.

@Spider Salticidae Who taught Tanner that this kind of "prank" is funny or entertaining? Did his father know about the videos? Encourage him? Then publicly state he's a good kid? If so, he might get a laugh out of being the victim of this behavior. If he didn't know or condone what his son was doing, that would be a different story. Some parents have a warped sense of humor, and teach it to their kids. Others are clueless about what their kids are actually up to, think everything is hunky-dory with their fabulous offspring, and wonder why others don't agree.

I was the target of a prank at a store. I was shopping and some jackass was following me around the store, describing me to someone on a radio. I've been the victim of stalking and have, at one point, been kidnapped. I was in full panic mode. I thought the guy was a trafficker and that there was some other guy that was going to grab me and toss me into a van as soon as I left the store. I immediately found a manager and asked them to call the police. They found the guys harassing another woman. Turns out they weren't human traffickers after all, they were KZbin pranksters posing as the store's security personnel, accusing people of shoplifting. They've been permanently banned from that store. I'm not some stick-in-the-mud with no sense of humor. I come from a family in which pranks are a love language and an art form. It isn't something you do with strangers because you don't know how they're going to react, what's going on in their lives, what health issues they have. A poorly executed prank has the potential to be fatal, as this guy found out. Doubt he'll learn, though. Like most people who run prank channels, he seems like an idiot.

Congratulations, you are a baseline basic decent human being, who engaged in an actual reasonable response, instead of what the guy in this story did: puffing up to the bully, trying to steal the bully's phone, then provoking an excuse to shoot someone that posed no physical threat to him. Shooting was a WILDLY disproportionate response to an obvious petty bully obviously recording a stupid video (cameraman and all).

@@bronco5334 The video clearly shows the delivery guy trying to escape Tanner Cook's bullying. He puts up his hand to block the phone's camera, not steal it, and says No 3 times. He got what was coming to him, and it will probably happen again. It reminds me of an encounter I had with the World Famous Bushman, a busker who used to be at Fisherman's Wharf here in San Francisco. He used to pretend to be a bush, and then jump out and scare tourists. He pulled that on me one time when I was walking by back in 2013. What he didn't know was that I was in the city for therapy for severe depression, PTSD, and homicidal rage. I was armed with a walking stick and a knife, and I came very close to attacking him. But a bunch of laughing onlookers got between us, and I walked away. I had no idea he was so famous until I read an article about him dying from heart failure a year later.

@@tmorelli1982 they’re pretty spot on with the definitions in this context though. It is narcissistic to engage in that kind of negative, attention seeking behavior to the detriment and embarrassment of others. A large part of the goal of these videos is to embarrass and humiliate others which is something narcissists relish doing because it feeds their ego. And they also are gaslighting because they’re often misrepresenting themselves as people in positions of authority like security or store employees and then being deceptive and creating a confusing and upsetting situation based on lies. Purposely messing with peoples perceptions of reality is gaslighting, bruh. I agree the terms are overused these days but this person appears to be using them correctly.

@uggggggghhhhh
@uggggggghhhhh Жыл бұрын
I have an irrational fear of ending up in one of those "prank" videos, I feel like I wouldn't find it funny at all so I'll probably get roasted so hard in the comments... For some reason these people tend to expect you to find harassment hilarious or they want you to get angry but get over it as soon as they tell you you're on video. I know staged pranks get a lot of hate but Id prefer it over some innocent person actually getting harassed and bullied for internet points. I once watched a video of a guy going around cutting peoples wired earbuds with sissors, get their reaction and then surprise them with apple earbuds. I just know I wouldve been soooo upset - as in, sad - if someone did that to me because I prefer wired ones and usually splurge on them. I guess it just doesn't cross their mind that maybe some people would not want apple earbuds?

@Laura That will be tricky because banning that would also ban tourists taking photos and such by proxy. It would be a difficult thing to outlaw without creating an incidental blanket ban on public photography. If it was in a mall it was likely private property, which is already illegal trespassing, but there aren't much repercussions to prevent it. It's like disincentivising illegal border crossing with a jaywalking ticket. And there are already a thousand security cameras filming you everywhere you go, the FBI has a database of your day to day activities, calls, and messages. But something protecting people from getting posted to large channels, kind of like how they did releases necessitated to be on cable shows, might be doable. It's just really unchartered waters because there are channels who film theme parks with millions of subs, but don't embarrass people, then there are literal clowns like this, and that's a nigh impossible thing to define legally without lots of collateral damage.

The shooters actions indicate he knew full well that this guy was not really a physical threat to him, and the shooter appeared to actively seek an opportunity to shoot him by provoking him (trying to steal the phone).

I don’t know anything about the defendant in this case, but my experiences in life make me inclined to want to donate to his defense. I have severe PTSD, and I don’t deal with strangers well in general. If a male stranger grabs or abruptlytouches me, I seem to snap. Everything goes fuzzy, and in the end I find that I have been screaming about being attacked and have beaten someone up. I guess I really, really don’t like being touched by strangers. Both because of Tanner’s young age and his immaturity regarding other peoples feelings, he is not prepared for someone like me. In fact, I look like someone you could play a joke on because I am a grandma, and I smile at people I know. That young man has no concept of the wounding and the struggles that some people walk around with. I have been doing therapy work for years and have made a lot of strides in terms of going out in public again. However, the abrupt grab or touch from someone I haven’t been speaking with previously is still something I don’t handle well. My reaction comes from intense fear, but I have no idea why I react with fight instead of flight in these situations. If I knew how to dismantle that in my head, I do it. I can tell you for sure though that if he had started taking my groceries or doing other things to mess with me, I would start hitting and I wouldn’t stop until somebody made me. That’s why I don’t carry a gun. I probably use it. I hope this gunshot causes him to develop a little more wariness around people he doesn’t know. That could save his life in the future. It could save someone else’s to if things got out of hand. He has a second chance, and I hope he makes the most of it.

With him appearing so shamelessly dim-witted, this is a prime example of "the apple not falling far from the tree."

@@macmedic892 Pranks are annoying and sometimes go beyond mere annoyance to genuine disrespect. But it never justifies shooting (ie. potentially killing) someone. You must see the difference between at best causing grievous bodily harm (and potentially at worst taking a life) vs pranking someone. The former is a great deal more severe. Unless, of course, they felt their life was at risk, but then that becomes self-defence.

@@alfiecollins5617 We can be certain this incident was recorded. If and when the video is released, then we will see if the shooter was genuinely in fear for his life, versus a negligent discharge or intentional unjustified shooting. All I’m saying is-at this point, we have just the minimal information. It’s far too early to determine guilt.

And the law sides with a manchild. Laws should change. Just because he was not armed doesn't mean the shooter doesn't have triggers. I am leaving an abusive relationship and some of these pranks are very triggering.

They won’t change and would be worse if they did in general. it will never be perfect because it cannot be perfect. Juries have to decide what any reasonable person would do in a self defense situation, they are not supposed to consider what the individual triggers and traumas are of the specific person because involved because that would be terribly abused if that was the case, then actual murderers would be claiming their past trauma and personal triggers caused them to fear for their life when they murder someone and would overall be more unjust. Some of these things are considered during sentencing though. This is just the way it is.

Very well broken down, Dr. I agree with you when saying how it's surprising these guys weren't already subjected to violence before this incident. They never know what temperament or day that their target has had. Indeed whether they are armed or not. Reckless and not funny at the end of the day. Hopefully bullet wounds will stop their tomfoolery. Anyway Greetings from the UK 🇬🇧.

I want the shooter to find a really, really good lawyer. He needs help, and not harrassment from a bully that has clearly gotten away with it, even after police are called (the clown, part 2 example you shared). It's time for some counter suits by the shooters family. Of course he hasn't learned his lesson. He's even more infamous after getting shot. He probably thinks it was worth it. This guy will be in his dad's basement at 40 crying that he needs the govt to bail him out, cheeto fingers and no love life. Writing is on the wall for this loser.

It's a shame more of these pranksters don't get lit up like this - his channel wasn't about "pranks", it was about being obnoxious to people and then no doubt saying it's only a prank mate, I'm just doing it for content as if that makes it acceptable.

My entire childhood was abuse, neglect. I was the punching bag until I was 13, then I was out on the street to fend for myself. It was rough. And 56 years later it still is. My point is you mess with me I probably won't respond in a way you like. I'm done losing.

There was a fellow at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, CA using the name "Bush Man." He hid behind a fake bush and jumped out to scare people. I was angered and criticized him. He just ignored me. Looking forward to his next action seemed to greatly excite him. I disliked him. There were TV shows which performed pranks. "Candid Camera" was the most famous. There was another one called "Street People" with Mal Sharp in San Francisco, CA which was very funny. In Berkeley, CA Panhandlers enter restaurants and walk up to diners tables and aggressively ask for money. I complained to the owners and they said they felt helpless and unsupported. I told them if I got hurt during one of these confrontations in their business I would Sue them for everything they had. They looked worried. The prankster in this thing looks like a very big guy. If he hassled me in a store I would feel very bad. I noticed that his face looks like Fetal Alcohol cases I've seen. How can he be so perceptive as to know who is approachable to this type of humor? There are fairly average looking people who are potentially very dangerous. This one time the guy had a gun and fired. He must have felt his safety and dignity was being trampled. It's all that some people have left and they will not give that up without a very serious fight. This prankster is doing a bad thing.

I feel making people *anxious* or *panicky* is not safe! One does not know anyone well at all - meaning even relatives! No 'guarantee' that, that person will not retaliate in a violent manner because of what they 'feel' is triggering! May seem harmless, and 'friendly' to others watching! 😒 *But* not to this *one individual* who may be without an ounce of tolerance in his/her bones. There are some, siblings even, who one 'learns' the hard way, won't 'give-in' to your 'light-hearted antics' because, they either 'dislike you' already, or feel superior, 😏 therefore you're *just a nuisance.* I feel, these 'pranksters' are putting themselves at unnecessary risk doing nonsense! That guy saw it as crossing his personal space by a stranger - like would you pet someone else's Pitbull?😵‍💫
