From investigating this case. The father was not taking proper care of the child. He would leave her home alone for beer runs, didn’t clean the house, wasn’t any food in the home, child wasn’t bathed, she wore the same dirty clothes for days. Also, the babies mother was a heroin addict. So this poor child dealt with all of that, then to be beaten, tortured, and abused by this psycho babysitter. This poor child never received the care, love, or attention that she deserved. Every adult in her life failed her.

We can’t excuse the inexcusable. Lindsay did what she did because, simply put, she “could.” There were no cameras, nobody to supervise her behavior, and the defenseless child could not protect herself. Leaving your child in the care of another person is a risk. I took my oldest to a daycare when he was a baby, by then walking but still a baby. I cooked and packed his lunch every day. One day the daycare owner said something about how he wouldn't eat and I was surprised. It came out that she mixed all the baby's foods together and sat them in a half circle around her and fed them the mixed up mess, one afther the next, from the same spoon. I quit my job and never took him back there. It's not abuse, I know. But I made his food so that I knew what he was eating and that it wasn't someone else's garbage. Of course it became garbage and I still feel guilty about having put him in this situation. Of course, I don't know what else went on.

Absolutely. My nephew was sold in an illegal adoption. The woman who had him was giving him adult doses of nyquil to keep him quiet. We were able to rescue him from the situation after a few weeks. For about two years he would bond quickly to people and then cry so hard when they left. For example a vacuum cleaner salesman came by and spent two hours in my parents home demonstrating a unit. Robby cried so hard when the man left. We knew he'd eventually level out. We just had to be patient. He had a really hard time when his dad would leave for work. My brother and my nephew still lived with my parents which helped a lot. If we'd had to take him to a day care he would have really melted down.

A lack of empathy for others and irrational thinking can be deadly. Sad to see children suffer at the hands of adults who can't handle their emotions. @@sarahjaye4117 the withdrawals in an infant are awful. They have this high pitched cry that is very distinctive. It’s heartbreaking to hear. When a hospital discovers that a baby is having withdrawal symptoms they give the baby medication to taper off so that the baby doesn’t really feel much in the way of the withdrawal. It might yield a fussier baby but newborns sleep so much that it’s over before anyone really knows it. It’s still awful and heartbreaking, especially when you consider the damage drugs could have done to that baby’s brain function 😭 I once saw a baby with withdrawal when I was in nursing school and the mother was crying and crying the whole time because the state was taking the baby away. This was her sixth child and the state took all her babies away and she kept saying “I want to keep this one” it was so awful and sad. She wanted to be a mother but she could not be responsible for her children even as they were being formed in her womb. She just lived in this permanent state of denial and anytime reality broke in on her it wrecked everything and left her completely destroyed emotionally. If only she could stay in reality and get through the pain of healing … I felt so sad for her, even though the state was doing the right thing for the baby. It was so sad anyway. 😢

My kids as toddlers happily entered daycare because it was a fun and loving place. Yet when my son spent the night at my family's place he came home a totally different kid. I knew right away something was wrong! Just pay attention to your child's energy when dropping them off. If they are clinging to you, devastated to be there then that could be a sign it's not a good place for them. Aside from the regular anxiety of parting from their parent , if that makes sense. Obviously this little girl was having a bad week there and it was probably getting worse every day, hence the extra affection she was giving her father and unwillingness to leave. A girl without a mom would have normally been happy and excited to spend the day with a kind and caring woman who paid attention. If she preferred her father's company with the level of care he was providing then that should have been the red flag.

This is horrifying! I worked in a preschool as an assistant for 6 years and a deputy manager for another 6 years. I have never encountered anything like this! It's common for a toddler to cry when their parent leaves and I can't get my head round how this awful woman punished that poor little girl for this. This is absolutely horrific!! I worked to rehabilitate a child who suffered brain injury from shaken baby syndrome. She was never the same again and later died from a seizure disorder. This is unfathomable...brain injury is no joke. I've had one most of my life. Doing this to a kid what the hell??

Trust both sound judgment AND your gut where your kids are concerned. I left my young child with a young female babysitter once, a friend of the family…….my gut told me not to and my son was crying. We got to the end of the road, waited 10 mins and went back. She had several boys and girls already in the house, loud music and the dog had ran away in the chaos! My son was unharmed…..but who knows what could have happened if we were out for a couple of hours!!? Found the dog eventually and never left my child with her again!

Heartbroken for the sweet child. Never had a chance at life. Her mother was in prison, her dad was having a hard time n her daycare person killed her after punishing her in a cruel way days before. That’s why she cried for her dad. She knew the lady was mean n didn’t want to stay. She is with the Lord now. Sweet precious baby girl.

A superb summary and analysis of this criminal case, Dr Grande. I am so glad that you gave Hannah the honour and respect she deserved, and the opprobrium deserved by the perpetrator, when others are regarding her as a victim. Lindsay Partin has tried to make this out to be all about how tough it is for her - as a Mom - while failing to acknowledge the enormous extent of the suffering endured by this innocent three year old child and the enduring pain from the loss of her from the lives of those that loved her. Eighteen years is not a long enough sentence in my opinion.

It is horrifying that Lindsay Partin was the mother of two little girls and had an associate degree in pre-childhood education and yet despite her experience and training she thought that punishing a three year old girl (born addicted to heroin) for being upset when her father dropped her off in the mornings wass reasonable . No doubt the little girl experienced terror at being left with a woman without any empathy or compassion and who was capable of the type of violence that could kill a child ! The continued support of Partins family is unconsionable and their statements that Partin isn't capable of harming a child beggars belief given that in a police interview played during her criminal trial , Partin stated "I got mad and I just slapped her up the side of the head," and "I shook her and I remember picking her up and squeezing her" , simply because Hannah squeezed ketchup into the toilet !!! This admission of abuse to a tiny and vulnerable child over something so trivial is condemning ! The fact Partin escalated the violence towards Hannah and finally killed her is a tragedy that did not need to happen . She deserves her time in jail and her children may live because of it. After all who knows what may have happened to them in the care of such a mother ?

Rhetorical and probably unpopular question: would Hannah have been put in that situation if her mother hadn't have been jailed for having a substance abuse problem? Let me be clear, I do NOT fault the poor little girl's mother or father in this instance. Only one person is guilty in Hannah's death, the babysitter Lindsay. I'm only questioning the sentence of prison time for a "crime related to drugs". Was the mother a major player in the distribution of illicit drugs? Doubt it. Was she an addict who's behavior led her to being arrested, charged and sentenced to prison? More likely. Court ordered treatment, house arrest, a case worker may have been the better path, in my (probably unpopular) opinion. Those three lives, Hannah, her father and her mother, may have been improving right now.

I'm sure that Lindsay is taking parenting classes, because she thinks that it's gonna help her get out of prison earlier. But saying that she plans to advocate for innocent people, when she is so clearly guilty, will not help her with the parole board.

I have a son with ASD who struggled when he was first transitioning to daycare. I always made sure there was time to be patient and comforting and it was hard to watch other mothers being dismissive or even frustrated with their children. They love you and are looking for that emotional support. Acknowledge and validate their emotional response. I would sit down with him hold him and remind him I love him and it is ok to miss me because I will miss him too. I remind him every day that I will always be back. I found that if he had a picture of us together to look at when he missed me it helped him through it. Whenever I saw other little ones still sad because they missed their mom/dad I always dropped down so I was eye level and used the same gentle patience I have my boy. I have felt frustrated because I am far from perfect and I will step back and breath and remind myself that I can make the situation better if I stop and think of a different path through whatever has happened.

Great analysis Dr. Grande. 🙂💞When my daughter was a toddler I had dropped her off at daycare and headed to my class, and remembered I had forgotten my purse inside the inhome daycare, and when I walked back in to get it I observed the day care provider pulling a child up by the arm, yelling and smacking the child for trying to calm my daughter down who was crying at my leaving. She had never cried in all the time I had her in day care. I removed her from that day care. Feel so bad for that little girl. 😞

Y'all have to see how Lindsay's lawyer aggressively interrogated Jason. It's so bad that it's not even beneficial to the case. She was straight up bullying him to try and get a reaction but he stayed calm which just made her angrier. You can find it on the Law & Crime Network channel: Lindsay Parton Trial Day 6 Part 2 Here are a couple things mentioned: He was accused of lying with how much time it took to do things like backing out of the driveway because he said it took about 30 seconds to do that and her lawyer said it would have taken at least 45 seconds to do that. There was nitpicking on how many seconds it took to do do a couple other things. She tried to trick him into saying Hannah fell and hit her head in the back seat. "You said you brushed her hair and got ready in the bathroom but there was a brush in the living room." I wanted to beat my head on the wall while watching this.

And this is why I don’t use babysitters. 🙅🏻‍♀️ Every once in a while, my parents will babysit for us, but we’ve never just picked a random teenager or neighbor or whatever. EDIT: People seem confused by my comment, so I will clarify. A “babysitter” is not a licensed daycare provider. I am not talking about daycare or preschool services. I am talking about “babysitters” who have no threshold of qualification. As I said, my parents (who live an hour away BTW) *rarely* babysit for us. “Rarely” means seldom, not often. In our case, every month or two for an evening. “You’re so privileged!” No. I’m not.

Always quality Dr Grande and I love your informative and objective presentations. I am now listening to you at least once a day now. Your calm voice and unique style is really a great way to communicate to others. I am seeing people comment that they are surprised that adults would hurt a child. There are monsters everywhere disguised as functioning members of society. My parents are exactly like this woman featured here. My dad broke my eardrum as a kid, he used to burn my skin, him and my mother used to cut me open with the rings, my dad made me eat worms… My dad used to hold me down and kneel on my chest as a boy while holding my eyelids open with the palms of his hands and slowly spit into my eyes. I was constantly beaten as a child and because of these things, I had a speech impediment, I would sleepwalk, and I basically had nightmares from my entire childhood that they explained away to doctors because I was interested in rock music. Can you believe that? My dad once stripped me naked in front of my friends and tied my hands to the mailbox and made my friends watch me be beaten from my lower back and across my behind and my legs. I was beating so bad and was bleeding for so many days that when I went to church with my family, I had to lay across my mother and my brothers labs because I could not bend it at the hips Because my skin would open and I would bleed through my clothes. I remember that day as it took three different changes of clothes just to get out the door so I can hide my open wounds on the back to my legs and my behind. Later in life I had been in a couple car accidents and even one fistfight with two guys against me at the same time. When I was getting hit by those vehicles or even beaten by those other men, it didn’t really bother me at all. I really just seem to be ready for it and I remember laughing as I was choking one guy while the other one was beating me in the skull. I barely made it back to my house and it was at the bottom of my stairs for about 40 minutes until I could catch my breath and crawl up the stairs. But I remember it was actually an enjoyable experience to a degree since I had so many beatings as a kid, I had kind of forgotten what it was like. Of course, nobody wants to be beaten in such a way, but I guess what I’m trying to say is I’m next to my little foster dog who also has experienced beatings and loss in his life. So I only make time for the good ones whether that’s a human or an animal. Im 50 yrs old now and my only regret in my life was not defending myself effectively by incapacitating my father back when I was 14 or 15. I either would have been exonerated from that crime if one could call it that since it would’ve been self-defense, or I would be getting out of prison right about now. But when I really think about it… I’m very thankful that my parents beat me and made me bleed in such ways. Because whenever life gets tough, I always think of what my life was like as a boy and it will never be as tough as that. Yes, there are evil humans among us that Dr Grande points out to us. They are disguised as homemakers, bank employees, law enforcement sometimes , religious leaders, care givers, or your neighbor right across the street from you, etc. This is the world we live in. It is our duty to be our optimal selves and good to those we can care for and protect while knowing every other person we meet are like the subjects we hear about on this channel.
