People think that it's super easy to just sue someone. It really isn't at all. Especially for something like this. You'd have to prove in court she knew what she said was false AND that it caused you significant financial damages. It also cost a significant amount of money that you just hope that the judge rules in your favor and you get that money back. Also she has to have money for you to win. She's not exactly a millionaire. You usually sue a company and not a person. Because then the court will make you sell off your assets to pay for it.

@Bee R usually if the case of a criminal nature, the Police could decide to press charges by themselves, even if you EXPLICITLY stated you don’t want to press charges. In case of theft, it’s true could be up to a applicant to decide whether to press charges or not, but in case of assaults causing actual bodily harm or murder the charges WILL be pressed by the Police. Moreover, in this case any “I don’t want to press charges” will be considered by them as very, very suspicious.

I'd argue it's just more visible than it was before. The narcissist has social media for their validation, plus as influencer, the monetization opportunities reward content that gets lots of attention. They can make an outrageous claim, or slander someone and the whole world can know about it in minutes, hours or days. The more outrageous, the more attention it gets. The more people are talking about them and their claim. The more they can portray an image to the world, and profit. There's a reason Amber Heard kept 'adding' new details every time she had to do sworn statements vs. Johnny Depp.. Her cluster b traits craved that attention, and each time claims got more dramatic and horrific. In Heard's case it was about gaining clout as a DV activist. The perception, instead of the reality. And for years, Heard was rewarded too.

Vulnerable Narcissist.... This reminds me of a young woman I know. Her parents were involved in a vicious divorce, and following the divorce, the father bowed out of their life rather than force the daughter to have medical exams to prove his innocence in some unsavory accusations. Throughout the rest of her youth the mother continued to tell the kids how evil the father was, all the while sending the kids to be with him every summer, and every other Christmas, etc. Later the daughter used this story as a source of manipulation. Her father (who she chose to live with when she got to high school) found out that she was smoking, so her response was "I don't feel safe living with you because of what mom told me you did to me).... and another time when she snuck out to have a tryst with a college age boy when she was 15, it all turned around and was her father's fault, and another time it was his fault when she got in trouble for drinking alcohol during a field trip at a school. Finally it all came to a head just before Covid, when the daughter learned that her father and his wife had purchased a second vehicle (their first in almost 20 years of marriage). She asked him to give her their older car, and her dad told her that the older vehicle was leased, and that the purchase of a second car was due to the need for a second car. A few days later, she sent a blackmailing letter to her siblings, and her stepmom setting forth an ultimatum that everyone should stop associating with her father because of teh allegations her mother made about him during the divorce proceedings nearly a quarter century previously, and she was successful in driving a wedge between him and his children. He hasn't heard from them since Covid began. It seems to me that she gets so much more sympathy from both institutional sources and relatives by being a victim of her father's supposed misconduct than she got before she decided it was an issue. There is more sympathy and caring to be had for a victim than for a young woman making poor life decisions.

@@Jay_490 Thank you. I only know two people who have gotten divorced and had children, and in both cases there was one parent who was always bad-mouthing the other, and in both cases the children were ultimately made to choose which parent they would believe. In his case, they all opted out. In the other case (my sister), her son chose to believe his father, and her daughter chose to believe her mother. Her daughter was, I feel, the most grounded in reality. She loves her dad still, but she doesn't *like* him. She loves her mother. She sees that they are both flawed human beings, but she is able to accept and love both. Too bad my other friend has lost his children permanently.

A 'favorite' story people in my community love to spread is some variation of being in Target (it's always Target) and noticing some men dressed in black suits following them and their child. They leave the store and these men keep following, but they're able to get to their car and get away. They always add a women into the story somewhere as well. They post their 'abduction warning' story and get the tons of "oh my gosh, that's so scary!" comments that make them feel important. It's disgusting.

I remember my wife coming up to me and telling me this story (saw on Facebook). She said to me “how can we raise kids (2 & 6 months at the time) in a world where people like this exist”… I agreed with her statement. A few weeks later when this story came out, I told my wife what happened and that it was 100% fake. My wife felt ashamed because she brought the story my attention and experienced a strong emotional reaction… She then said to me “I’m happy the Martinez’s were proven innocent but I feel even worst… How can we raise kids in a world where people like her exist…”. I again agreed. It may seem extreme but this women deserves 2 life sentences for almost ruining 2 innocent lives. Also the problem with a story like this is there’s a good chance my wife would have never heard the follow up truth. I think that’s a huge issue for our society today… People hear a lie told as a truth but don’t always hear the actually truth that follows…

I was on the Katie Sorensen jury and your analysis was similar to ours. The false accusation law is based on the mental state of the accuser in California. On 12/7 she could have made a mistake and in a state of panic, reported something that did not happen. On 12/14, the statements about being 100% sure and being willing to testify happen after she is told about two things that were wrong. She was told that Sadie and Eddie went into the store before her, when she claimed they followed her in. She was also told they were nowhere near her in the store except at the checkout line. This was very different than her being followed around the store by Eddie. The parking lot video is not quite as clear as you say. Eddie and Sadie did head somewhat near her and did reverse course for their own reasons. The person Katie called out to was an old man, who did come help her with her stroller. Part of all of this was hidden behind some vehicles as the camera was from a Kohl's next to the Michaels. Katie convicted herself on the stand. She said three things that were untrue and related to all of this. She denied the rough looking statements had anything to do with appearance. Katie claimed that her Instagram posts were not made to make money. She said that she thought from the first moment on 12/7 that she might be wrong about the incident. That combined with the 12/14 police interview showed that she was not beyond lying.
