Let's review what happened to the Class of 2014: Magic!: Never had another hit in America. Had some hits in Canada for the next two years, but even those dried up. Sam Smith: Still around, still had hits as recently as 2020. Disclosure: I remember "Magnets" with Lorde getting some airplay even if it was mostly on alternative stations. They've had other hits on the UK and US Dance charts. For a band that isn't really pop, I'd say they've done pretty well. Nico & Vinz: "In Your Arms" charted low on the Hot 100, and that's the last America ever heard from them. "That's How You Know" was a big hit in Norway and Australia, and that's the last the rest of the world ever heard from them. MKTO: Nothing since "Classic" has charted in America, and they haven't had any other charting singles since 2015. They haven't even put out another full-length album. Rixton: Two other charting singles in the UK and Ireland, nothing else anywhere else. Changed their name to Push Baby and haven't managed to chart since. DJ Snake: Had numerous Top 20 singles over the next two years, only one since 2016 ("Taki Taki".) Iggy Azalea: Had another top 10 hit later that year with "Black Widow" and two top 40 singles in the following year, but it's been diminishing returns ever since. Every attempt at a comeback has failed miserably, and her last studio album released last year went basically unnoticed. I know Todd is known for being bad at predictions, but he was absolutely right about most of them being gone by 2015.
@justezek85962 жыл бұрын
I mean Ariana had a breakthrough year, but the only other Class of 2014 star (s) that had traction and anyone at least cares about it off the top of my head are Meghan Trainor and Sam Hunt. Wow, 2014 was not good.

Really everyone else like Echosmith or The Neighbourhood to name a few had their one big hit and fell through core audience traction nonsense. Bastille got their next hit in 2018-2019, but it's boring as tar and no one even knew they dropped an album this year. Tinashe is doing good things, while Bobby Shurmuda is out of jail, I guess. After watching Clueless for the first time recently, I can definitely say that using that movie as the music video aesthetic for Fancy misses the point of the movie ENTIRELY. Especially having Charlie XCX as Tai. The whole movie, basically being a 90's updated version of Austen's Emma, was supposed to be about Cher learning how to be less snobby and not act like she can control stuff that doesn't fit her standard of how she views the world and this music video doesn't portray that at all.

Charli sells this song completely for me. I don't like it, mostly because most of it is rap and the production sucks, but if Charli's parts were indicative of the song as a whole I'd like it much much more. Plus, the production basically never changes, it's so stagnant. If the production would build, like add on top of the core beat and melody, it might turn out much better. But it's still brought down by Iggy's weak voice and lyrics. I'm not against rap I actually like a lot of rap, but Iggy is a huge stretch to call "rap" by any understanding that I have with the genre. Still, since she's a "rapper" she should do better to have lyrics that are actually impressive, but she doesn't. All I can really say about Iggy positively is that she's tall, and tall girls are cool. Other than that this is just a Charli XCX song with weak production and way too much of Iggy getting in the way. Still, the melodies of all of Charli's parts are so good that this song borders on being a guilty pleasure for me, and I'll probably always love her vocal tone. Pop music could use more singers with a distinct voice.

Charli’s songwriting is (or was at the time) largely instinctual, which is a nice way of saying that she didn’t really think twice about what lyrics she puts down. Obviously she has really fucking good instincts, but she tells a story about how she wrote the melody and lyrics to I Love It over a beat a producer sent her in about 20 minutes, and when people talked about how awesome it was for breakups, she had no idea what they were talking about. She just shouted things into a computer microphone. (She has “improved” since, though. Her song 3 AM actually has a story that builds throughout the song.)

And if Iggy Azalea wanted to bring back 1988, she'd put out songs that take on political meaning like "Straight Outta Compton" and "Don't Believe The Hype." Or she'd do artistic hip-hop like De La Soul or A Tribe Called Quest.

I just realized why I like SonReal. When Todd said "Hiphop isn't about getting it, it's about having it." That's what SonReal does, and that's why his music turns out so great.

"White Chicks" is a great fucking movie. Todd you better stay in the shadows. Okay it's not great but how dare you diss "White Chicks" like that?

+General Skunk (The Weirdo) From what I've heard, as long as he works with someone, he's pretty good. His work with Disclosure is pretty good. His problem is he wants to be a balladeer... and he's horrible when the beat slows down. Give him some dance music, and he works pretty well.

+General Skunk (The Weirdo) Well, he's kinda still around (I mean, he did have that James Bond theme last year which we won as Oscar for), but I think we need to wait for his next album to see if he can maintain the popularity that he had back in 2014.

Hey, at least bad songs from 5 years ago were trying to be FUN. Now everyone's just sort of....given into the despair, and the music is reflecting that.

Melissa Ellis Let’s all Thank god for that, and remember to always count our blessings, so we remember to NOT end up like these 2 trashy ladies. If we can even call them that at this point. Also, Weird Al’s parody of this song is so much better. Because at least, when you listen to Weird Al, you don’t have to hear these annoying idiots babble about bullshit. Have a great day/night, and remember to stay beautiful, though I’m sure everyone tells you that.

I was a college music critic in my school paper and I reviewed whatever new stuff that was sent to me: Craig David, Michelle Branch, Coldplay, and I can’t remember who else. My one successful, lasting call was Coldplay. And I’m so sick of Coldplay. Then my independent predictions on my own now-defunct blog in 2002 (when blogs were new!) was that Remy Shand and John Mayer were people to watch. I was right on one of them . . . for about 6 or 7 years. I’m no longer a music critic.

For his analogy of why would you watch a movie where a team is the first seed expected to win out. Yeah a lot of peoples favorite football movie is Remember the Titans and that team went 13-0 posted 9 shutouts outscored their opponents 357-45 margin and bourtier recorded 142 tackles and 42 sacks (according to the real life season based on it.) They do this by focusing around the players since it was a black white team coming together in integration story, but it can still be done.

Can we talk about how incompetent the video is? Clueless is one of the most iconic, creative and visually distinct teen movies ever. This was a lackluster, flaccid and boring imitation.
