I like to teach the sounds too. In addition, one thing I like to do as a first grade teacher is introduce the “naughty e” who is the defiant friend of “magic e”. He likes to cause chaos and won’t help the vowel say its name and instead messes up the vowel sound. The kids love pointing out the naughty e when they see it.😂

You are the best. I only teach it the way you explain it and don't look anywhere else for help. My kids are doing really well and are not confused. Thanks so much

At the end, because the sound of "o" is different, they hv to memorize it. Even if they dont memorize the word 'come', they hv to memorize the 'o' to read it correctly.
@noraschultz6898 ай бұрын
I agree. No matter what we cannot escape from having to make the children memorize… or in other words use the drilling method
@jaydel3Ай бұрын
that’s what didn’t make sense to me.. You can’t sound out the “tricky” words but he says you can. The kids memorize the tricky words and relate it to other tricky words. It’s not phonetic.

Well done, you ve got a lot of amazing videos and so much to learn from, Thank you. But I kind of disagree with this method because it might get the child confused when teaching sounds o with the magic e for words like bone, cone etc. What do you think about this?
@toddlerscanread2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I appreciate it! And that's a completely fair question & one I get a lot; you want to teach the long vowel spellings (vce for the examples you shared), digraphs, etc., and do targeted practice with those since those will be what they'll use to decode the vast majority of the time (about 90% of words follow the rules they can be taught.) If they're confident/ have mastered those, they'll usually know pretty quickly when they come to a word that doesn't sound right using the spellings they know or doesn't make sense in the context (for example, replacing 'come' with 'comb' would probably not make sense in context.) Does that make sense?

Here’s the thing if your child has a learning disability, a cognitive processing disorder such as my granddaughter phonics do not compute in her brain. I have the same learning disability and taught myself to read, but it took me until I was 21. I really don’t know how I did it Phonics still don’t work for me and we are trying to figure out what part of my granddaughter’s brain will click hopefully earlier than mine did . So trying to sound out words with silent ease, and other complex letter combinations doesn’t work for everybody .

Phonics.......everyone could read before this sight word crap.
@jaydel3Ай бұрын
sight words doesn’t mean memorize everything it means memorize words that are common but don’t follow general rules. Some use it to mean memorize words that are common per grade. I have always been told the former definition. Some words are not phonetic like “said.” The kids just has to memorize it.
@JAB-bc9uvАй бұрын
@jaydel3 it seems like phonics plus site reading is the way to go....but if the just use site I fail to see how kids can read.... 🤔
