I don’t have a kid and I’m not a teacher.. but your videos are very engaging, and I appreciate what you are doing. The way I see it, moving away from phonics takes away a child’s ability to teach themselves new words, creating more work for everyone. And without phonics, words may as well be heiroglyphics.. but worse because spelled-out words don’t even form pictures that suggest the thing they’re supposed to portray. English spelling rules are awful, but if anything, it’s the spelling rules themselves that need to be reformed (something like in Spanish or Swahili), not the teaching method-which is still powerful.

My 5.5 years old daughter just started studying this year, it’s so challenging for me to teach her: it, in, is and some other sight words. I watched one of your videos and you said that we need to focus on more tricky ones, that’s a great idea. Hope she will learn reading fast, I am so tired….

A Wicked Witch put a spell on the letter 'w' making the 'w' silent when 'wh' is followed by 'o'...whom, whose, whole etc.

I'll add it to my list! : ) But as a quick explanation, you can tell your little ones that the e in she and he are special because they're long vowels and say their name. So they would blend /sh/ + /ē/ and /h/ + /ē/. Does that make sense?

Yes. Excellent explanation. Thank you. Their explanation was brilliant. Also watchyou explain could would should to a child. I think I have to change how I explain that one to my 1st grade grandson. I was only using the (ou) sound, including the (l) was not a part of what I was going, I only told him (l) was silent. Thank you.
