Anyone else pick up how much this touches on hyper masculinity. He talks about the things he's done but justifies them cause he's a man and yada yada. He touches on how these old/gold chains (the ways of hyper masculinity) make him feel safe and brave, talks about never crying in front of someone, imagery of a pimp/lion 2 extremely masculine ideals and even talks about how all this is trapping him cause he's not even allowed to be who he truly wants to be and is forced to lie to himself. I loved every second of it too. Such a refreshing song

Bear King Dre he can be whoever he wants to be. Nothing wrong with being a masculine gay man. He should embrace that.
@frogsdoingyoga13927 жыл бұрын
the song doesn't find a problem with masculinity it's about TOXIC and HYPER masculinity and the way it imprisons males into this false persona where they can't fully express themselves.

This is my favorite song. Don't get me wrong, I love all of the song from Straight Out Of Oz. However, this song touches everyone and every circumstance in life; where you hind your true self from the world. Too busy trying to fit into the confines of societal boxes, or what you perceive that Society wants from you. You lose yourself or should I say your sense of self. You've played that character for so long that you start to believe the lie.

This is the cowardly lion theme song Toderick-style! The lion is supposed to be the king of the jungle, but this lion from OZ was not what he appeared to be..so this is what Toderick centered the lyrics on and expanded it to fit modern day view of what the public conceives as masculinity ,although the "man-inmal" knows better of himself it's not true , but a facade.. a lie. Love this track!

The idea of the Tin Man part of his life being himself getting heartbroken and becoming heartless and then going into the Lion part of his life where he builds himself up with all this pride so that his ability to love is obscured by this hyper masculinity is literally just so good and smart and amazing. Just realized, after watching this video however many times, that Todrick is comparing toxic masculinity to the Cowardly Lion. The "tough, gangster" male ideal singing "I'm not that type of guy" to cry, etc. It's all a false persona, on the inside he's scared and vulnerable. I'm still amazed Straight Outta Oz didn't get more attention, it really is a masterpiece.
