Hi! Would like to see the latest version of this lens: the Tokina atx-i 11-20 2.8. Thank you very much.

I seen the image quality in both old and new Tokina 11-20mm, and I can say it's about the same. This is why I bought the old version because the new one isn't alot better, not mentioning the old ones are about half or less than the new one.

That really looks like a great lens.. Personally I've been using the 600d and 18-55 kit for landscape photography for about 3 years now because I never had the money to upgrade properly and when I upgrade I want to go full frame anyways so I am always kinda split about paying that much money for a lens that works only on apsc.

Used copies of this lens in nice condition have dropped to like 150usd on eBay. This review is pretty fair for the price originally. The biggest negative for me is it’s very close range performance as it is something I have noticed in normal use. But at 150$ it’s a whole different equation for a lens that does if you know it’s limitations take very nice photos and has a wide aperture.

im dying to find out if i should buy the new 11-20 atx-i or the one presented in this vid.
@QuicksilverSG4 жыл бұрын
@@KrystalMovies - Check out Tokina's website and you'll find the ATX-i versions of the 11-16mm and 11-20mm f2.8 zooms are built using exactly the same lens element configurations as the first generation models. That means both AT-X and ATX-i models will exhibit the same optical performance. What's different is the ATX-i lenses use modern built-in auto-focus motors, which should focus much quicker and quieter than the original models. Those who shoot only in manual focus mode may not see any significant improvement in performance.
@KrystalMovies4 жыл бұрын
@@QuicksilverSG Thanks for the info. Taking into consideration that one can get a much cheaper used lens of the previous version and that a faster and quieter autofocus isn't really what I need when going wide, I'll be looking into getting a 11-20 of the previous version.

So question is this, does Tokina Cinema 11-20mm T2.9 ATX and Tokina 50-135mm T2.9 Mark II Cinema ATX lenses are made from same glass as their still versions? @tenow9 жыл бұрын
I recommend you reviewing old Sigma 28mm f/1.8 Aspherical generation 1 lens for Cannon. It was made for film cameras and has problems controlling aperture on modern DSLRs, but auto-focus works perfectly, You can open it's back and adjust aperture to f/2.5 manually once, and leave it like that forever. At this aperture picture gets razor sharp on APSC cameras. I've never seen better bokeh and contrast and there are no longitude or corner chromatic aberrations. For me it's greatly superior to modern ART Sigma f/1.4 for much less money and normal focal length is very practical.

Correct where I may be off base but a lens this wide would likely be used a lot for landscape shots...which are usually done with a tripod....which usually warrants turning off any image stabilization. If that is correct and the reason I would be buying this lens for landscape shots, then should there be any worry about it not having IS?

csc chua Well, it depends on the focal length you want. 10-20mm, or 17-50. The 17-50 is more versatile, but the 10-20 will obviously go much wider. God bless

If i can get Tokina 11-16mm and 11-20mm with a same price, which one to take? 16-20mm isn't super important to me, but does the 11-20mm one have worse image quality?
@christopherfrost8 жыл бұрын
+minepate I'd probably go for the 11-20

between this lens and the canon 10-22mm, which one should I buy?
@christopherfrost9 жыл бұрын
Vitor Sampaio If sharpness and wide aperture are important to you, the Tokina. If build quality and other optic qualities are important, the Canon. Watch my review of the Canon lens, or my 8x ultra wide-angle zoom lens comparison video

...Thought carefully about what your cons are with this lens! And I agree, to part with so much money especially when I will eventually go fullframe makes me think again... For video this would be better, me thinks... So then, what would you suggest as an alternative? I have considered a prime lens, but all the L glass seems to be a tad costly :( Taking into account wide angle and lots of light are the key factors which I want from a lens. Manyt thanks once again for your expert advice in all your videos :)

You're probably using your camera wrong. Try using a lower ISO level, or ask a local photographer friend for advice

Ive been using the Nikon 35mm for over a year which is awesome. ISO is at its lowest (100) in my case ive tried nearly all FStops. its not noticeable but once on the computer if you zoom in once it becomes visable. Thnaks for reply

+Noha Alghalib If you have a full-frame camera then you'll need an ultra wide angle lens that's suitable for full-frame. Try the Tamron 15-30 f/2.8 VC USD, it's very good

But i'm shooting on fullframe ;) But i think i'll use my Tokina 11-20 for astro & nightphotography, and i'll buy a Canon 16-35 f4 for daytime while shooting landscapes and stuff.. Can you also say the Canon 16-35 f4 is sharper than the Tamron 15-30 and the Canon 16-35 f2.8?
@jolebole-yt9 жыл бұрын
Thank you for reviewing this lens. However I would not consider this lens "expensive". Canon and Nikon's 2.8 wide angle lenses are $1500+. Will you consider doing a comparison review for the Tokina 11-16 vs 11-20. It will help a lot of people with the decision which one to get. Thanks!
@christopherfrost9 жыл бұрын
+Goran Jordanov The Canon and Nikon lenses you refer to are for full-frame cameras, so they are naturally a bit more expensive
@90make9 жыл бұрын
+Christopher Frost Photography Nikkor 10-24 f3.5-4.5 is meant for APS-C Nikons and it still costs at least 200€ more than the new Tokina.

Great review. I'm considering this lens for night/landscape/Astro since its predecessor the 11-16 is well regarded in that field. Since flare wouldn't be relevant then (correct me if I'm wrong), how would you regard its sharpness/coma for the job? Seems only some softness in the extreme corners as opposed to the 11-16mm is the difference. Thanks!
@christopherfrost9 жыл бұрын
+medstud I can't remember how the coma looked I'm afraid! The review over at Lenstip should talk about it
@medstud9 жыл бұрын
Thanks. There only seems to be 3-4 reviews of varying quality -yours being the most exhaustive in my opinion- online between blogs and KZbin. Ken Rockwell had a similar review to yours, and then there's SLRlounge whose video and article seem to think it's the best thing since sliced bread. In reality I'm only spolitting hairs because if I want a fast uwa for a cropped sensor there's simply nothing else on the market except its 11-16 sibling.

How can you shoot at F4 when it has fixed f of f2.8?? I am confused, help me
@christopherfrost6 жыл бұрын
If you read your camera's instruction manual you will see how to darken the lens's aperture
@Tbeezer76 жыл бұрын
It has a fixed aperture of f2.8. Meaning, if you open the aperture up to 2.8, it will stay at that aperture no matter what you change the focal length to. So if you’re at 11mm at f2.8, it will stay f2.8 even at 20mm. Constant aperture doesn’t mean you can’t use the typical apertures (f4, 8, 11, 16, so on)

I started out with a Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 for my astrophotography. Believing this lens is sharper and I had extra money, I "upgraded" to this lens. Unfortunately, at 11mm, while the centre of the frame is to a small extent sharper, the extreme corners are disastrous, especially for me as a Nikon user as it is 1 mm wider compare to Canon's. In the end I sold the lens and bought another second hand 11-16 mm... Lost some money but consider the price, this lens really doesn't worth it.
@KaiHinLkh8 жыл бұрын
Yes, I did make a comparison of the two lenses. These are right at the corners, 11 mm @ f/2.8. I would say they are basically the same, if not a little bit worse for the 11-20 mm. Since I don't need the 17-20 mm range, my decision was to trade it for the 11-16 and save some money insread. goo.gl/photos/AzPXMEJXVXZaLHAQ8

Kai Hin Lkh i rented 11-16 2.8 before. it is so unsharp at 2.8 especially low light. im not sure whether its bad copy or not. do you satisfied with yours?
@KaiHinLkh8 жыл бұрын
To eznymorpheus: It is mediocre at best, but the fact is none of the ultra-wide lenses for aps-c are sharp in the corners, and this is the one with the widest aperture thus it's the best option for astrophotography consider its price is low as well. On the other hand, Tamron just announced the 10-24mm 3.5-4.5 G2, let's hope it's optics would be better. Though, if you are serious about astrophotography, maybe going full frame would be the best option. I once considered the tokina 14-20mm f/2 but then i realise I can get a second hand D610/ 6D for that price...
@morpheusmorph138 жыл бұрын
Kai Hin Lkh why dont you get sigma 10-20 3.5 instead?
@KaiHinLkh8 жыл бұрын
eznymorpheus The corner sharpness is not that much better for the sigma but you lose 2/3 stop of light. Might not seem that much but I consider ISO 1600 to be the 'breaking point' of aps-c sensors (for astrophotography at least). When using the tokina, I can barely use ISO 1600 to shoot and still get usable images. I also have the sigma 8-16 mm for years, however using that with ISO 3200 is basically unusable. The colour of the milky way faded and noise mixed with the stars making NR impossible. I was using a D7200 by the way, which already has one of the best aps-c sensors.

I guess, the Nikkor 12-24 f4 or even Nikkor 10-24 are optically better than this tokina, am I right? I'm planning to get a wide angle zoom for my D90.

Reactor77 I was thinking about it, but it's a bit of a weird lens idea. I don't see the point of it zooming in to 17mm, because all you're left with at that point is a wide angle lens with a lot of ugly barrel distortion

Hey Chris. First I must say that your reviews are really great and help people like me, beginners, decide what to buy. Can I ask you for your valuable recommendation... I got an APS-C and am buying a "universal" lens for street photography (mainly night photo, portrait, close-ups and occasionally landscape and architecture). I already got my nifty fifty, now I'm deciding between TOKINA 11-20/2,8 DX and SIGMA 17-50MM F/2.8 EX DC OS HSM. First I wanted to go with Tokina but after seeing both of your reviews Sigma looks so much of a better choice, even though it's quite cheaper at my local dealer. Am I missing something or is SIGMA 17-50MM F/2.8 EX DC OS HSM in this case a clear favorite?
