@@animezilla4486 They don't. They don't even know what Song of the South is, they think the characters are unique to the ride. However they like the ride and the characters, and Princess and the Frog was not very popular in Japan so there's no way they're retheming it no matter what Disney says.

@@kipolem53 While true, the main thing is that Tokyo Disney is owned and run by the Oriental Land Company that simply pay a license fee to Disney and can otherwise do what they want with the place. Disneyland Paris and all other non US parks other than Tokyo are owned by Disney itself and subject to their whims although in Shanghai and HK they also have to work with the CCP.

Despicable how Disney is trying to bully OLC into bending the knee, even if *_basically the entire population of Japan_* has no problem with the current Splash Mountain. I will be in Tokyo in a few weeks. The parks in the U.S. have become quite unbearable.

Bob Iger sees the tides changing and is in a panic to force more DEI before the end of his tenure. What he's not understanding is the roles have changed. The OLC doesn't need Disney, Disney needs the OLC. The OLC could tell him to pound sand at this point and whatever Iger does in revenge will be weak and minimal. Even the most leftist of Disney fan channels has been admitting that OLC knows what Disney fans want, and Iger's regime does not. God bless OLC for digging their heels in and fighting. My guess is Iger will not last until the announced end of his tenure, it will come sooner.

The way the DEI/ESG crowd will treat a Gina Carano (or, in the judicial-political world, a Clarence Thomas) means they need to zip it about a Disney attraction originally full of cute, furry animals now referring to Louisiana salt mines tied to slavery & audioanimatronics with a black dialect ("I don't know nothin' 'bout birthin' babies, Miss Scarlett!") as somehow less racist.

They were the first team of archeologists to protect and preserve ancient artifacts during conflicts between US and ISIS forces, they had the first film company to revive the "Cheburaska and Gena" franchise with a new stop motion animation, drawing interest to other counties outside the former USSR. ❤🇯🇵

OLC doesn't fix things that aren't broken, but in about 5 years from now Splash in Tokyo will be due for extensive refurb, so it will for sure be re-themed
@ThemeParkZilver
@ThemeParkZilver 6 сағат бұрын
Extensive refurbishment and a complete retheme are two very different costs. More importantly, the OLC doesn't leave things in a broken state until a big refurbishment like US Disney does. So when they do have long refurbishments it is mostly for cosmetics. This isn't always the case but it often is. In 30+ years, they may have a change of heart but so far all of the classics have remained and there is no reason to retheme what can more cheaply be fixed.
@Frankenberry
@Frankenberry 9 сағат бұрын
The only thing I could see being AS popular as the original splash mountain would be if they kept splash mountain in the name and themed it with all the classics... Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Minnie, Daisy, etc.. and just told some kind of wacky, zaney, old school Disney adventure story ride with the classic splashdown ending... Both sides would get a win, Disney would get rid of what THEY feel are problematic characters, and the fans would get the TRUE CLASSIC DISNEY attraction they've all been longing for.

Man I really didn't consider Alice in Wonderland until now. That would actually work fantastically with splash if done correctly. Heck I could see them changing the ones in the US to that eventually, In fact they should change WDW to alice, keep tiana's in CA, and keep splash in tokyo. Then there's a reason to go to all three as each would be the strongest iteration of their respective rides. They could even move the extra bayou animatronics to the CA version to make it more populated.

I want to set one thing straight. The OLC does not have any "loyalty" to Splash Mountain, especially in regards to the Song of the South legacy. The reason Tiana is not going in there is the OLC is unimpressed with Tiana or it's ability to sell merchandise. This is the same group that required upgrades be made for The Indiana Jones Adventure, one of Disneyland's most popular attractions before they would put it in. This is also the group that rejected Frozen Ever After in favor of a version that follows the original story. (Throwing out Tiana's Bayou Adventure solely of the grounds of it is a "sequel." With Disney having no intention of allowing a Tiana that is based on the film.) With no strong connection to Song of the South (save for a very limited release in the 90's) the japanese just see the ride as cute animal characters. (As Marvin pointed out) Meanwhile Disney US is pushing harder and harder to strip the OLC of Song of the South rights, which includes those characters. (Something they can only do for about a decade before the OLC is free to bring it all back.) They have taken the music and the store, and are now trying to get the ride and restaurant. (The restaurant will likely go next.) People have been wondering why Disney would build a Lion King Splash Mountain in Paris if it was "so important to share disadvantaged voices." It's simple, Lion King is an attempt to sell Japan on a version of Splash Mountain they are willing to change to. Don't be surprised if that is the eventual retheme they go with. Were it not for that, Paris would be getting another Tiana as now Disney risks people comparing the two and favoring Lion King. (But, better that, than allow Splash Mountain to continue to exist.) As for possible rethemes. I get the idea of Peter Pan, but understand they just added a whole Peter Pan area with two rides, plus they still have the original Flight of Peter Pan. The "Critter Country" in Tokyo Disneyland is located between Frontierland specifically bordering Rivers of America and Fantasyland almost right next to the Haunted Mansion. They would need to find a franchise with either frontier theme or as an extension to the fantasy theme. It would also need an equal amount of merchandising power. Of course, Lion King is the main thing on the table but maybe, maybe Pocahontas could be made to work. Realistically, any replacement will need to be an original concept. Not impossible but highly improbable for current Disney. (I would personally try and find a way to make Brave work, but I know good and well it is not an overly popular franchise.) Disney has made a colossal mistake. The executives and money counters wanted Splash Mountain gone because it was costly. Older electronics using high amounts of electricity and several moving figures made it a Journey Into the Imagination 2.0. (Funny how that works) The activists within Disney jumped on the proposed changes to virtue signal. But, in the end they produced the fastest, easiest, *cheapest* swap they could. They used Tiana specifically because of New Orleans in California. And used the events of 2020 as cover for the change, knowing they could use race and the movement to redirect the backlash. (But, don't let them fool you, the movement did not ask for any changes to be made and even denounced them knowing they would be the scapegoat.) All while not even making significant improvement to the "problematic" nature of Splash Mountain. (Maybe even making it worse) Now they have to justify the change or risk being exposed for empty virtual signals being exposed as the cost cutting it really was. On a completely separate note, the OLC is not just the "Tokyo Disney" company and the park alone is not the only factor in the share price.
