My personal favorite of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.. The irony and delivery of the lyrics matched with a superbly talented band makes this a musical masterpiece. Didn't realize the depth that this man's music had on my memories, good and bad, until he was gone. Tom will never die. As long as I am alive, other people will will be introduced to his music. Tom Petty was great for a very long time, going all the way back to the 1970's, but unlike a lot of musicians who are good in one era, Tom continually got better every decade. In the 1990's he was huge because instead of him trying to fit into the era, the world finally caught up to him. Man, he is missed.

"Now he belongs to the ages." Lord knows we lost one America's most prolific and brilliant singer-songwriters and real deal performers. I lived in Gainesville FL on the same street as Tom's Dad Norm who kept a beat up old pickup out back that Tom used when he was visiting or playing his hometown. I saw that the truck was gone a few times and wished that I could at least get a glimpse of this amazing, Iconic American Rock Artists. That never happened, however, wishes can come true and with more than you wished for. My older brother is singer/songwriter and attended U.F. Tom Petty surpased the university for bringing Gainesville to life. It was a combination of seeing my bro play clubs like "Mad Monks" and "The Alibi" with beautiful women all around and Petty's popularity that inspired me to become a professional singer, songwriter, performer & Producer. Tom was playing in his hometown once while I was living there in 1994 and we tried very hard to get tickets but couldn't. The night after his big hometown show, I was playing at a little Italian place, I think it was called Nepalitano's. After playing my last song of the night people close to the stage were talking with me and I had to pee like a racehorse. When I finally broke away and headed for the restroom, I past a dark corner where I could just make out shadows from which I heard "sounded really good man." After a quick "thanks" in the mens room I was thinking "I know that voice" but couldn't place it. So on my way back out I took a good look and said thanks again. "You want to join us for a beer," sure I said just as I realized it was Tom Petty. I spent about an hour with him and someone from his road crew talking about music - precious moments I'll never forget. I'm very, very lucky and thankful to have kicked a few back with an idol and major influence on my life and career-~~~~~Peace be with you Tom, thanks for the treasure of brilliant music you've left us and for an hour I'll cherish until I pass - when I hope to kick a few more back with you....

In this song, Tom shows us a special secret, a special skill that many people have. Check out the singular people in the video; you can call 'em weirdos, but in THEIR minds they're all KINGS. As he says in the song, it's a place in his mind that he goes to. I like a lot of his songs, but this one is special. It's important that I can go to that place, so I can be King, since it seems that Darwin doesn't get to choose, so much, anymore. Watch the end of the video. Fortune passes everywhere.

Every man has an "empty box" in their minds where they like to go from time to time. It's the place of absolute peace and quiet; it's the time when a man's eyes become sort of glazed and they're just absent from the moment and time. No woman has ever understood this and probably never will. I always feel, when listening to this song, that it's exactly what this song is all about. It's good to be king, if just for a while. Cheers, Tom Petty.

For those here who care: Portraying several different cultures illustrates the idea of Cycles. Portraying people wearing old clothings and costumes in old decors, objects and antiques also illustrates the idea of Cycles. Things change. The world is revolving. Nothing is permanent. This video is about the United States of America "being King for a while". And ultimately falls down to decay and ruins and fades away. As all things do. And it ends on a silent God Bless America. Extremely talented Director. I think this is my favorite song and music video of the 90s.

Tom Petty was a king. Everyone loves you when you're dead - Stranglers. This man was a genius, musically and lyrically. The music world will miss him and his songs...... xx

Tom is King. Of the best music ever. No trends or fads just pure solid rock and real to life story telling. That will never fade. As Kings never do.

I think this song is basically about people escaping reality, into their mind, where they're king, and anything goes.

+Alex Heine I think its about how crazy women make men but we love them anyway.

I kind of agree but idk about escaping reality. I think some of the things that can make people feel like a king can be very real...like getting high or picking up a prostitute.

Wildflowers and Echo...in my opinion they are two of the best Tom Petty albums ever recorded and criminally overlooked within the Tom Petty catalogue....a must for any true Tom Petty fan to have in they're music collection...

Echo is definitely one of the very best, and Wildflowers…well, absolutely sublime.

This song reminds me about my wife. It was her favorite song before she lost the battling to cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, I miss her smiles, she was always there for me and our lovely daughter, and I never miss a moment with her, life could be so unfair most times, there is some pain, I will cry in vain but won’t let you know how I will feel yes, I will miss you to the core! but some times i wonder why bad thing always happen to good people. She’s always in our heart…

Tom, you have been in my life since I was that young teen in 1982, discovering my love of Rock n Roll, and everything that comes with it. Your songs saw me in every phase of my life since, and no matter how long I live, I shall never forget you. God love you Tom, and Thank You - You were the King.

You know i like Tom Petty like anyone else, but it seems like he could never decide if he wanted to be Bob Dylan or Lou Reed. This is one of the best songs of its time.
