Tom Petty is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame singer-songwriter renowned for his hits “You Don't Know How It Feels,” “It’s Good To Be King,” “You Got Lucky,” “I Should Have Known It,” “Swingin,” “Something Good Coming,” and “Saving Grace.” He worked with artists like Stevie Nicks, Prince, Bob Dylan, and George Harrison - amassing over 80 million record sales and 40-year career of sold-out shows.
Lyrics:
It's good to be king, if just for a while
To be there in velvet, yeah, to give 'em a smile
It's good to get high and never come down
It's good to be king of your own little town
Yeah, the world would swing, oh, if I were king
Can I help it if I still dream time to time?
It's good to be king and have your own way
Get a feeling of peace at the end of the day
And when your bulldog barks and your canary sings
You're out there with winners, it's good to be king
Yeah, I'll be king when dogs get wings
Can I help it if I still dream time to time?
It's good to be king and have your own world
It helps to make friends, it's good to meet girls
A sweet little queen who can't run away
It's good to be king, whatever it pays
Excuse me if I have some place in my mind
Where I go time to timeIt's good to be king, if just for a while
To be there in velvet, yeah, to give 'em a smile
Where I go time to time

"Now he belongs to the ages." Lord knows we lost one America's most prolific and brilliant singer-songwriters and real deal performers. I lived in Gainesville FL on the same street as Tom's Dad Norm who kept a beat up old pickup out back that Tom used when he was visiting or playing his hometown. I saw that the truck was gone a few times and wished that I could at least get a glimpse of this amazing, Iconic American Rock Artists. That never happened, however, wishes can come true and with more than you wished for. My older brother is singer/songwriter and attended U.F. Tom Petty surpased the university for bringing Gainesville to life. It was a combination of seeing my bro play clubs like "Mad Monks" and "The Alibi" with beautiful women all around and Petty's popularity that inspired me to become a professional singer, songwriter, performer & Producer. Tom was playing in his hometown once while I was living there in 1994 and we tried very hard to get tickets but couldn't. The night after his big hometown show, I was playing at a little Italian place, I think it was called Nepalitano's. After playing my last song of the night people close to the stage were talking with me and I had to pee like a racehorse. When I finally broke away and headed for the restroom, I past a dark corner where I could just make out shadows from which I heard "sounded really good man." After a quick "thanks" in the mens room I was thinking "I know that voice" but couldn't place it. So on my way back out I took a good look and said thanks again. "You want to join us for a beer," sure I said just as I realized it was Tom Petty. I spent about an hour with him and someone from his road crew talking about music - precious moments I'll never forget. I'm very, very lucky and thankful to have kicked a few back with an idol and major influence on my life and career-~~~~~Peace be with you Tom, thanks for the treasure of brilliant music you've left us and for an hour I'll cherish until I pass - when I hope to kick a few more back with you....

I still have this cd. I miss the 90's. Ripped jeans, flannels, grunge music, and of course this awesome album of his. Tape decks were still current. CDs were available but new (early 90s). The internet was in its infancy. No cell phones to stare at. You could browse music shops and video stores. I could probably keep going but I'll stop there. RIP Tom. Thanks for the music memories.

My personal favorite of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.. The irony and delivery of the lyrics matched with a superbly talented band makes this a musical masterpiece. Didn't realize the depth that this man's music had on my memories, good and bad, until he was gone. Tom will never die. As long as I am alive, other people will will be introduced to his music. In this song, Tom shows us a special secret, a special skill that many people have. Check out the singular people in the video; you can call 'em weirdos, but in THEIR minds they're all KINGS. As he says in the song, it's a place in his mind that he goes to. I like a lot of his songs, but this one is special. It's important that I can go to that place, so I can be King, since it seems that Darwin doesn't get to choose, so much, anymore. Watch the end of the video. Fortune passes everywhere.

Tom Petty was great for a very long time, going all the way back to the 1970's, but unlike a lot of musicians who are good in one era, Tom continually got better every decade. In the 1990's he was huge because instead of him trying to fit into the era, the world finally caught up to him. Man, he is missed.

Every man has an "empty box" in their minds where they like to go from time to time. It's the place of absolute peace and quiet; it's the time when a man's eyes become sort of glazed and they're just absent from the moment and time. No woman has ever understood this and probably never will. I always feel, when listening to this song, that it's exactly what this song is all about. It's good to be king, if just for a while. Cheers, Tom Petty.

For those here who care: Portraying several different cultures illustrates the idea of Cycles. Portraying people wearing old clothings and costumes in old decors, objects and antiques also illustrates the idea of Cycles. Things change. The world is revolving. Nothing is permanent. This video is about the United States of America "being King for a while". And ultimately falls down to decay and ruins and fades away. As all things do. And it ends on a silent God Bless America. Extremely talented Director. I think this is my favorite song and music video of the 90s.

I was at the rock n roll hall of fame last week. They have an awesome Tom Petty display there. He had both sides of a hallway and was one of the larger displays I saw that day. It was moving to see his hand written lyrics to several songs including my favorite, this one! They also had a flannel shirt and pair of jeans that he wore on the cover of the Rolling Stone. Rest In Peace, Tom.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers the King of kings is coming soon, to take all that is his and leave all else to be burnt. Whatever stands thru the fire of God will stand forever and forever. Jesus is the only way to stand that fire. All those who've refused to believe in him and live according to the direction/instruction/leading of the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ are about to pay up on a debt that no man could pay off. You ppl have no idea what is about to come!!! Those in Christ take no thought of it. We know we're outta here 1st!!! COME QUICKLY LORD JESUS!!! ('bout 2 weeks or so)
