I saw this band back in 1979 at the Sata Cruz Civic. I was 19 and my very first concert.i stood up front next to the stage. His oncore was this song; its was the best concert ever in such a small auditorium.

This 1946 Bobby Troup song is kind of the national anthem of touring musicians. If you take I-10 to Los Angeles, it's hard to get the lyrics out of your head. I presume Tom Petty drove from Florida to Los Angeles in the mid-1970s to become a famous rock star and went through some of the towns referenced in the song. (Had Interstate 10 completely supplanted Route 66 by then? I took the route in reverse in 1982. Feel free to blow through Gallup, NM at night -- it's kind of depressing.) When Tom pulled up on the Sunset Strip, he immediately went to a phone booth to look up record companies to call to inform them he'd just arrived to become a famous rock star. On the floor of the phone booth, he found somebody else's list of the phone numbers of record companies. To you and me, that would seem incredibly sad and foreboding: somebody else's hopes and dreams of success in rock and roll had been crushed utterly in that booth that very day. But to Tom, that discarded list seemed instead like a happy omen that fate was smiling on him and didn't even want him to go through the effort of having to look up phone numbers in the yellow pages. And indeed, he soon had a record deal and a few years later he was a huge rock star and went on to a long happy career in show biz performing, hanging out with Bob Dylan, owning a mansion on Mulholland Drive, voicing a character of "King of the Hill," and suing young punks who ripped off his songs. When he dropped dead of drugs 40 years later, his estate made an extra $20 million over the next three months from everybody playing his songs, which no doubt please his ghost.

I like Tom but this version (after so many other ones) is far from the best. What’s the best version of Route 66? In my opinion from Them (Van Morrison) in 1965.
