Tom Petty "Wildflowers" Deluxe Box Set Opening! World Premier!

Rick Rubin asked a while back if I'd be willing to listen to a set of this box's 9 test pressings. "After all", he punked me, "you are the last person in North America with a turntable". I was more than happy and honored to do this. I was asked not to disclose this until the box's release date (October 16th) was announced, and I honored that request.
A few weeks ago the publicist said I'd get a box well in advance of release date (and before just about anyone else) and that I could review it at that time. The box arrived yesterday, Friday, September 26th. I dropped what I was doing, set up the video stuff in my listening room and recorded in one long take the "box opening".

Bless you for this and the unboxing video of the set. I drew and had Tom Pettys wildflower tattooed on my tummy on the left side above where my bikini would not hide it! Now 46, I need a serious touch up it’s so faded! I have never heard a Tom Petty song I did not like. I got my tattoo for my 21st b-day! Back in 1996. After a year stay in FL. I moved back to Virginia to settle down and finish college. I was so excited to here this news! That was the only tat I had on my body other than a cross, I had added later on my chest. Over my ❤️ heart. Thank you for the unboxing. Your hair is great, I would let it grow just as I would the wildflowers!

Hi Michael A well informed and interesting video as always. Seeing you surrounded by all those records makes me think , you must be the custodian of one of the greatest collections in the world . Do you ever plan to archive it and make provision for its future. It certainly is a wonderful legacy, and testament to a lifetime dedicated to music . As you know, this guy holds a special place in many hearts. I was fortunate to see him 5 times and only wish, now, it had been more. This is an important release for family, friends, the band and his countless fans. I was on the website, day one, when you could’ve purchased the MEGA box set for $499. At that time, there was nothing saying there would be only 500 sets. I took a screenshot, messaged a friend to give him a heads-up figuring, I would come come back and purchase it at a later date. I looked a few days later and sure enough, it was sold out. OUCH. Better get the 9 lp box before it sells out. I understand it’s another limited box press? I was never into preorder anything. Live n learn. Don’t sleep on this TP fans!

Hi Mr. Fremer, I love music and somewhat of an audiophile... do not own a turntable or many vinyls but am a music aficionado of great CD box sets. I loved the previous American Treasure... that was an incredible collection. I have no doubt that this is as great. Yes, what a legend. It seems they were all a part of the Wildflowers sessions (I think I'm getting that right?). That's such a wasted album in many ways because the songs got next to no exposure, but are as excellent as anything else he ever released. Thank you for this World Premier. I've enjoyed the entire 16 minutes. Very humbly & knowledgably presented. Take care & enjoy that wonderful set!

Running a pirate radio station and everything is analog. Up until my new mixing board, nothing in my studio is less than 20 years old. I love collecting promo copies, bootlegs, all formats--even MiniDisc. Just got a new subscriber. I am fortunate enough to have some soundboard recordings of Alice Cooper that his late assistant recorded and gave to me that have never seen the light of day, one of those things that don't "officially exist." Love all of this stuff.

I'm not the world's biggest Tom Petty fan but do appreciate his music. I will say the Heartbreakers during the Southern Accents tour may well have been the tightest band I've ever seen live. Don't Come Around Here No More kept building and building and building. It was utterly amazing and I'll never forget it. Thanks, Mikey. I may spring for this set.

Yes, the 2015 release was the first cut from tape. This one was cut two more times to get it the way Ryan Ulyate and Chris Bellman wanted it to sound. I didn't compare to the 2015 set.

I'd love to hear the early recordings of the tracks that ended up on "She's The One " which I think is criminally underrated, the big knock on it was that it was mostly songs that weren't good enough for "Wildflowers " Obviously, Tom felt like they were great songs otherwise he wouldn't have released them at all, and now this box set comes out that he'd been wanting to release for a while leading up to his death, personally I think if you strip away the different versions of "Walls " and "Angel Dream " and the instrumental "She's the One" is one of his best, definitely top 5 for me... Supernatural Radio, Grew up Fast, I Hope You Never, Climb that Hill, not even mentioning Walls and Angel Dream, which are also killer, then the covers, Asshole and Change The Locks???!° totally totally killer, underappreciated album

Are you saying just the original 2 lp “Wildflowers” release was cut n mastered at Bernie’s and “All the Rest” was not done at Bernie’s but somewhere else? I recently ponied-up 2 bills for the 2016 ALL ANALOG “Wildflowers” Studio Vol 2 Reissue Box Set. It’s an excellent pressing! Is this pressing “as good” or “better”? Thanks

All of it was mastered b Chris Bellman at BG's. The original Wildflowers was cut and recut from analog tape and sounds incredible. The rest, out of necessity, because of what it was, was mastered from a high resolution digital compilation. Ryan Ulyate took the live multitrack tapes and transferred them to hi-res digital and mixed them down. The home stuff was originally recorded to A-DAT at 24 bit. It all came out great and there are reasons digital sources can sound better on vinyl. I SWEAR!

So I'm definitely about to get this box set. But, All I have for a turntable is a "Rock N Rolla" cheapie with a USB connection that allegedly converts vinyl albums into MP3s. I've never tried it out, but should I just get the Digital Download, or should I get the CD Box Set which I'd assume has the liner book, or... ? What'd you think?

I think if you can afford the box you can at least find a way to buy a proper used turntable on EBay or Audiogon or wherever and install a decent cartridge. Look for 70s era Pioneer, Sony, Kenwood, Denon etc. Should cost less than this box! Better would be a new U-Turn, a Rega P1, a Pro-Ject, a Music Hall, or an Audio Technica. Im leaving out a few. You

Wildflowers is AAA but the rest could not be. Tom's private recordings (which are really worth hearing, were recorded to A-DAT. the live stuff was assembled from multitrack analog tapes transferred to high resolution digital and mixed to two track hi-res. They sound great and there are reasons these records can sound better than streamed files and surely sound better than 16 bit CDs.
