One of those songs... after thirty years... always cry. Pure beautiful. Eternal.

Often come back to this album and especially this song. One of the most imaginative and profound songwriters imo.

The wild thing about Tom Waits is, if you listen to interviews with him, he just talks like that. You would be excused for thinking his lyrics are the result of hours of hard labor, but it just falls out of his mouth fully formed like that. It’s amazing.

I wish I could have Tom’s mind for a day. It really is something incredible

He is an artist in the true sense, so as art the song is subjective to each person

Yup, I may be wrong but I think Step Right Up was adlibbed

They're lining up To mad dog your tilta whirl 3 shots for a dollar Win a real live doll All the lies that you tell I believed them so well, Take them back, Take them back to your red house For that fearful leap into the dark I did my time In the jail of your arms Now Ophelia wants to know Where she should turn Tell me... What did you do, What did you do the last time? Why don't you do that Go on ahead and take this the wrong way Time's not your friend Do you cry, Do you pray Do you wish them away Do you still leave nothing But bones in the way? Did you bury the carnival Lions and all Excuse me while I sharpen my nails And just who are you this time? You look rather tired Are you pretending to love Well, I hear that it pays well How do your pistol and your Bible and Your sleeping pills go. Are you still jumping out of windows in expensive clothes? Well I fell in love With your sailor's mouth and your wounded eyes. You better get down on the floor Don't you know this is war Tell me who are you this time? Tell me who are you this time?

His wife, Kathleen Brennan never gets enough credit for co-writing his songs. Some of the best lines in his songs are hers.

Is that right? "Jumping out of windows in expensive clothes" kills me every time I hear it or think of it.

Yep, she knew what she had. Used him well. I used to make love to my trannie girlfriend in Hawaii to this song, to this album. It is an impossibly long tale. She killed herself at the end. Too long... good night. Get down on the floor!

I’ve been a Waits fan my whole life. I’m having a little trouble deciphering the meaning of this song. May someone explain it to me?
@kirstenbrodbeck-kenney53303 жыл бұрын
I've always heard it as a person talking to an ex who's resurfaced. "All the lies that you tell, I believed them so well"; "Oh well, I did my time in the jail of your arms," etc.

It's always sounded to me like a man struggling to see the person he once loved turn into something un-recognizable

"Are you still jumping out of windows in expensive clothes? Tell me who are you this time?" is the key in my opinion. Awakening from a dream once believed. Your turn...

I think hes talking to a woman he used to love who broke his heart, she doesnt really love anyone, she just uses them up and leaves them, she was insecure & pretended to be someone she wasnt.maybe lol I love trying to decipher his songs
