I’m using the Solo & PodMic without a cloud lifter or anything and have to crank the gain to 3 o’clock or so. The noise is manageable in post for sure, but that’s interesting to hear the pre-amp difference between the Scarlett and the Rodecaster. I also sort of cheated and bought an XLR to 1/4” to add in another mic when needed. Works pretty well in a pinch.

Tom a huge thanks for putting these videos together all while making them entertaining to watch. As someone who has recently jumped into the world of leveling up my online classes, livestreams, and workshops, I keep coming back to your content for answers, comparisons, and of course, the jokes. I'll soon be upgrading my Yeti to an SM7B, and next need to decide on the Focusrite or Rodecaster Pro. It's hard for me to see my using a Rodecaster Pro at the moment, but I love the idea of leaving room to "grow into" my gear! Though one of my concerns is trying to juggle too much while delivering the content (zoom/slack chat, slides, OBS/ecamm live, and now perhaps a rodecaster!). It seems overwhelming but perhaps that's just how it feels in the beginning :) In any case, a huge thanks for putting all your content together...your videos have helped me A TON! And I hope we can hear more jam sessions in future vids!

I'm really happy to hear this! Thanks for the kind words Robert! As for your current dilemma, the SM7B will perform the same through either interface (and will really shine with a signal booster), so it just depends on what key features you need. I think the Focusrite is an excellent choice if you don't need the recording/EQ bells and whistles of the RCP. 👍

We’ve had both the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and the Behringer Uphoria UMC 204 units for our podcast and the Behringer uphoria 204hd is much better. It has Better pre-amps, a much quieter noise floor, and even better headphone volume (if you need it)... The 2i2 doesn’t have the best noise floor... The Behringer unit is cheaper too...and made of metal and very robust too... no software needed to make it work either...:). Great video as always. Would love to see a review of the motu m2. I ultimately went with that instead of the Scarlett, because of 2 things: has a simple screen to monitor sound levels as opposed to just lights, and has plenty of power to run with a Podmic and no cloud lifter needed. Little more expensive, but ultimately cheaper if you don’t need to buy a cloudlifter now.

Hi there, are you using an iPad with your M2? I'm setting up a project studio around a 2021 iPad Pro (M1 USB-C) with Garage Band and I'm considering the MOTU M2/M4, the Audient ID4/14 MK II and the Focusrite Scarlet Solo 3rd Gen/2i2 3rd audio interface. From my research, it appears with all of these interfaces running on an iPad you will need to install Audiobus 3 and AUM if you want to record vocals/guitar live through the interface while also monitoring the output of Garage Band sequencer tracks and/or live instruments. If you could share your experience with the M2 if it applies to my set up it would be appreciated (I'm a long time user of MOTU products but the M2/M4 does not appear to have been designed with iOS/iPad compatibility in mind). Many thanks!

I don't mind the comments, they're all great! The 58 is a super versatile mic and might be the one to stick with for a while. The PodMic has a different visual appeal and has the super nice built in mount, but otherwise, I don't know that you'd notice much of a difference. The go-to option for a higher level mic is the Shure SM7B, and while it's a genuinely outstanding mic, I think there are also a lot of other great choices out there. If you search around based on your preferences and your voice's needs, you might find something super cool. I recently bought a Shure Super 55 just for fun and I absolutely love it, but it's definitely not a common choice in the podcasting/streaming space.

If you're recording bass, for instance, you can go direct-in through one channel, and set up a mic pointed at the strings near the nut for the other channel. You can then process either or both channels as you like, and the mix them down. You can often get interesting effects that way. And that is why, for music, you want at least two inputs, ideally where both accept XLR mic inputs. The fact that the unit doesn't have enough pre-amp gain for common dynamic mics is a problem in a real-world situation, where you don't have an acoustically-treated room/studio, which would make condenser mics practical (and probably, desirable).

The biggest thing is the Rodecaster Pro doesn’t have its own sound card, it just uses inputs from different sources. That means if you’re attempting to use the Rodecaster as an audio interface, you’ll still be using your computer’s sound card to do so, which uses memory. Best thing you can do is use an interface in conjunction with the Rodecaster Pro.
@tombuck3 жыл бұрын
Hmm, while this may technically be true, I've been using the Rodecaster as an interface for two years now on everything from my 2013 MacBook to my brand new MacMini and it's never caused any memory issues or problems at all.

Thanks for showing how the cloud lifter works. I was close to upgrading my yeti to a new mic but the extra money on a cloud lifter I'm not sure if it's worth it since I don't make money streaming nor do I stream that often. I noticed that without the cloud lifter you said it could work but you get hissing/ambient sounds that are more noticeable without the cloud lifter and the volume maxed. I use the Scarlett Solo with a Beyerdynamic 880 headphones (250 ohms). I pretty much max out the volume to really hear certain songs or even in games. Is it fair to assume that my Scarlett solo probly isn't strong enough to provide a proper sound with my headphones? This is all assumption because I'm maxed out dialed to 5oclock on my Scarlett. Never used garageband before, but do you get to decide how you want your guitar to sound in that last 15:40? LOVE that greenday solo! I saw them live just recently at the dodgers stadium. By the way, your channel is dangerous for those who are getting into the streaming/podcasting world! LOL. Makes me want to get back into streaming again and just spend all my money haha. Great content though! Gave you a sub.

@keithbennett51794 жыл бұрын
You have a great channel and your doing a great job. Just always remember that anything you put in (what sound people call) the signal chain (path) matters. A Neumann U87 hooked to a bad cable is tragic for sure. Yet at the Rodecaster pro level with a PodMic’s it not as bad a moment! Yes, I had that microphone for years. Sold it to build my new streaming room, sold some other amazing gear as well. I came from owning a recording studio... Sound was my thing. My u87 Microphone was not connected to a Rodecaster pro either! 🧐
@11folders3 жыл бұрын
Based on the example from the video, would we need the cloud lifter for the Rodecaster Pro?
@tombuck3 жыл бұрын
Depends on the mic really. Most dynamic mics definitely benefit from some sort of signal booster.

Hi Tom, Greetings from Singapore! I'm a beginner and learning a lot from your videos. It is said Scarlett 2i2 doesn't carry a Loopback function. Do you think Loopback is a critical function in podcasts and streaming? Motu M2 has been popular recently, and some users seem to like it over Scarlett. I wonder if you had a chance to try Motu M2. any comments? Always thanks a lot for the great reviews!!!!
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve! I haven’t used the Motu myself, but it seems to be getting more and more popular. Loopback really depends on your needs. I’ve a,ways viewed the 2i2 as a simple interface, and in that regard, it does everything I could want it to. I do have the Loopback app on my computer to mix and route virtual audio sources, and that has definitely been a lifesaver many times😎

Hi Tom. To use the two channels, the TRRS and the Bluetooth to record two guests via telephone you obviously need 2 different phones. Right?? John
@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
Yes, or you could use a phone and a computer as a separate audio sources.

I have an AT2020 XLR mic and the Behringer U-Phoria UMC202HD, 2-channel audio interface. it works well for me but like you showed above, I usually do have to have the gain up pretty high on the Behringer. Nonetheless, I bring it into Audacity, throw on a compressor, noise reduction, EQ and limiter and the sound comes out great. Less than $200.
@tombuck3 жыл бұрын
For under $200 that's an awesome setup. I think there are very few devices that would really crank out the gain in this price category, but like you've shown, there are lots of ways around that 👍

Great video Tom! I actually just got the 2i2 and a Podmic today! I noticed you mentioned you’re using Buzzsprout in this video. Did you change from Anchor? I’m about to launch a podcast and was considering Anchor based on your previous video, but I wasn’t sure if I’d missed a video where you talk about Buzzsprout? Did you happen to make a video on that I might have missed? The whole Podcast Hosting thing seems tricky and sounds like it would be good to get it right from the start. Thanks again for the great videos Tom! I really appreciate the info you share in your videos, it’s been super helpful.
@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
Congrats on the new gear! I haven’t made a video about Buzzsprout yet, but I will. I still think Anchor is an awesome tool, and the fact that it’s free is pretty tough to beat. My issue is more with Spotify and what seems to be their goal of dominating the podcast space. Buzzsprout advocates heavily for independent podcasting. That being said, Buzzsprout did give me a free account, so while I definitely would pay for it, it’s important to make it clear that I’m not currently paying.
@tryplecrown4 жыл бұрын
@@tombuck Thanks so much for taking the time to give me a such a quick, detailed reply! I really appreciate that! Was the transition from Anchor over to Buzzsprout difficult? I heard that somewhere that it was challenging to get your content moved from away from Anchor if I decided to change down the road so I think that's what's concerning me. But the free option seems like it would be great for someone like me just starting to test the podcast waters. BTW, fellow drummer here (nice setup you have there!). Thank you again and keep up the great work!
@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
It was super easy to switch! Anchor has a redirect page where you paste your Buzzsprout link, and then Buzzsprout can automatically upload your existing episodes. Your listeners shouldn’t even notice. If you ever want to go back to Anchor, you’d just erase the link. 👍

I need to record some indoor workout, and I have have the mic. arm 2 meters up and 3-4 meters away from the instructor. I was thinking the Focusrite 3rd gen and then what mic to go with ? right now I have the Oktava MK 012-01 movie set black (hyper cardioid) ... but is the a good choice ? wireless is not an option right now.
@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
I haven't used the Oktava myself, but I've used similar mics at work in a studio setting with mixed results. The Super Cardioid pattern might help reduce background noise, but I was getting way too much boominess from the room. For your situation, I would look into a nice shotgun mic designed for long range pickup. Rode, Audio Technica, and Sennheiser all make outstanding options.

Hi Tom, Great video thanks for posting and sharing. I've been having a volume problem with my Focusrite Solo. I use a Neewer condenser mic. (HA HA !!!) and I get very low to no volume. The phantom power button on the Focusrite is on. Would a Cloudlifter solve my problem or do I have a faulty device?
@tombuck3 жыл бұрын
In your case a Cloudlifter wouldn’t be advised since it would stop power from reaching the mic. A condenser should have PLENTY of volume with the Scarlett.
