2018 is my favourite. Rhoden came out of nowhere and finally toppled the villainous champ, Heath. A lot of us were desperate to see Heath punished for his gut, but resigned to the fact that he was unbeatable. Then Rhoden came in with one of the most mind blowing physiques we've ever seen, despite looking completely out of shape only weeks before. There was also the drama of Ramy falling to 6th place when he was many fan's favourite to win the show and Roelly finally nailing it and closing the door on Bonac.

I guess if you don't like Heath that would've been a good one lol... I on the other hand was rooting for him to tie the record so he could break it in 2019, but ah well. Rhoden and Roelly were fantastic.

Is a little over rated since it was actually the incredible camera that made the cuts look alot deeper. It made even Nassar soft back look ripped so with Dorian back in the camera shows so much quality. That 99 olympia was insane. I always say for anyone to truly understand how great bodybuilding was in the 90s to go watch Shawn Ray's 99 olympia posing routine then realize he only finished 5th. That speaks to the depth of the show and the 90s as a whole. The best decade in bodybuilding history.

Damn great list, 92 and 98 Olympias also had sick lighting.Well tbh most of the 90s shows had awesome lighting but what really makes or breaks it is the backdrop. Back then they had a very dark black curtain behind the stage for prejudging and more ornate stuff for the finals.I think the black curtain thing is the best as it brings out the contour and makes them stand out . They should bring that type of staging back, at least the prejudging which where most of the comparisons take place. The 96 German GP had insane lighting but i wish they would have used black curtains behind the stage, it would have made it even more epic. And since we're on this subject Wayne Demillia was in charge of stuff like this back then, and the set designer was always a guy named Charles Blake, in all 90s Olympias he was the set and lighting designer.

Modern day advertising has ruined most sporting events. Loud glaring screens with bilge on them flashing away. Gone are the days of simple backdrops ...My favourite year was 1985 Mr O. Rich Gaspari was my idol and only 22 years old. I was 17 and it was my first ever Olympia video I watched. A he'll of a lot of top talent and in excellent shape as well. I'd have '91 Olympia for sure, for me it had everything. Haney at his absolute monstrous best, a challenging Yates to defeat (but he did so rightfully), but most of all the QUALITY of the posing routines just felt incredible in this particular year! I cannot recall another show where the routines from the competitors were of this standard. I always felt the routines slipped significantly down a tier or two after this show. Think about it; 1) Lee Labrada, his routine at this show is arguably the greatest routine EVER seen on stage. It raised the bar so high that no one came close to repeating it. It elevated the sport and showed something sorely lacking, mass with class. It wasn't all about putting muscle on and hitting most musculars and front double biceps through grinning teeth. This was almost ballet with gains! I feel it demanded a lot of respect from the public, like a feeling of 'I couldn't do that!' rather than 'yeah I can walk on stage and hit a few poses'. Totally different stuff altogether, Lee was in another league here. 2) Lee Haney, a masterpiece routine as well, superbly executed, totally professional and made Yate's routine look amateur and inexperienced. 3) Shawn Ray. Ok.. it's Phil Collins, but still he did it brilliantly, the climax was worth it. 4) Vince Taylor. I don't know if this was the Terminators first outing with this routine but I recall it being the first time I saw it. I have vivid memories of standing in the supplement store in Edinburgh as a kid looking up at the tv and just not buying anything but instead just waiting for this routine to be played. Ah... memories :) 5) Sonny Schmidt... "Thunder!! Thunder!!" Yep, man I felt this show was on point, the '92 quite a let down in comparison (the venue didn't help at all). On a side note, I'm so glad to hear you talk of things like 'lighting' more and more. As a photographer its EVERYTHING. Of course so much more extends beyond lighting for video and stills, aperture, ISO, shutter speeds etc, but light certainly is paramount. Staging as well and the backgrounds. As a photographer doing portrait work, I'd move the person somewhere where the background would be less distracting, less busy... but here in modern Olympia times they give no fucks. They must have shitty ads in the background and the most busiest ridiculous backdrops (that probably cost heaps too!), fucking dumb. No respect to the athletes at all. All the focus should be on them, this isn't opera! They can elevate the sport significantly through hiring an event photographer who understands these elements and the sport and is hired/flown from comp to comp to set things up right AND consistently from show to show within the organisation. That's something the IFBB should be doing.

For me '93 is the best, not only because of the lineup, but also for Yates single handedly introducing (like it not) modern bodybuilding. To me 2021 is also very significant. First you had Ramy as the underdog after years of failing to meet expectations, and after getting shit on for "not deserving to be on the olympia", proving everybody wrong and winning the title decisively. Second you had the comeback of Phil Heath. Third you had 3 former Mr. Olympias on stage, all of them eventually losing. 4rth you had the dramatic entrance of Hadi Choopan literally arriving to the US 1-2 days before. Too bad the lighting was shit.
