The ability to jump introduces a subtle yet profound concept known as ludonarrative dissonance. The freedom to move along the vertical axis allows the player to travel directly orthogonal to the main goal of the game. @ikagura Жыл бұрын
Nintendo still is responsible for perfecting and making more common game design elements. Sure Pac-Man was the first video game mascot but Jumpman aka Mario is the first to have even more games for him and making gaming mascots trendy in the next years. Nintendo popularised motion gaming with the Wii, they also made official non-retrocompatibility based retrogaming with the Virtual console and they also created handheld gaming as a whole. Inventing and popularising things are two different concepts.

@@TomOReganYT Mate, this video is golden. You've captured the whole editing aesthetic of these video essays, I was giggling the whole way through this, especially when you said Mario 2 was a reskin of Mega Man X, and I love the completely not-at-all accurate titles of games in the corner. Also, I love that genuine laugh at the end! Honestly, I think taking the piss out of these sorts of videos would be both refreshing and funny, and oddly clever. Sometimes, getting something _properly_ wrong you have to know exactly what makes it _right_ Like Garth Marenghi's Dark Place. Keep it up!

An intriguing inversion of the "jump" trope can be found in the original Deus Ex (2000), in which the trenchcoat-donned hero, JC Denton, approaches a massive ventilation shaft on the surface of Area 51. The trillionaire antagonist, Bob Page, encourages the player, shouting "Jump, you can make it!" However, it is revealed to be sarcasm if the nanoaugmented sunglasses-wearer jumps into the shaft, being that he, in fact, does not make it, but is instead shredded to bits by an industrial fan. I think video game developers, particularly indies with the freedom to experiment artistically, could learn from Deus Ex and develop new, daring game modes in which deadly holes, perhaps "Pitfalls", also exist to trick the player.

You should have showed one rule that applies to a few games, and say that it should apply to all, as if you were so smart that you have discovered a universal rule of game design that all games must follow. Like: all games should have double jump because it adds depth to the decision making of the moment to moment gameplay.
